This man had a "drag queen" as a friend and they went to various clubs as friends. And in the BBC article below, Omar Mateen went to the club where he killed 50 people to drink.

About 10 years ago, Mateen, a few years out of high school, was working at the supplement store GNC. Samuel King, a year ahead of him in high school, was working next door at the restaurant chain. Mateen was a few years out of playing football in high school while King, who is openly gay, had long, flowing extensions, and prettier hair than most of his female co-workers.

...King saw none of that homophobia. Quite the opposite: He said Mateen knew that he and many of his co-workers at Ruby Tuesday were gay, and didn’t seem to have a problem with it.  “That’s the thing that’s pinning me to the wall the most, that it was a gay nightclub,” King said. “Because he would come into the [the restaurant] and laugh with us.

But people would rather talk about Mateen being Muslim?

This is the same article as at the top. It describes Mateen's recent attitudes and his talk of wanting to kill people. A co-worker describes him as "unstable." Someone at the Mosque he went to said he stopped talking, the change itself could be a sign of mental instability

Black people "have been through enough" Mateen reportedly said. But he went to gay club, that he himself used to frequent, full of black and brown people? This man was not mentally balanced.

REGARDING WHO GETS TO BE LABELED "MENTALLY ILL" BY THE PRESS 

Just because someone is "mentally ill" that doesn't mean they aren't responsible for their actions. 

The main stream, mostly white, media reserves the label "mentally ill" in order to dismiss white shooters of black people, brown people, and women in order to avoid investigate racist and sexist patterns in the communities from which these predominantly white male shooters come from. However, "mentally ill" does not, in reality, negate the racism, sexism, and homophobia in the society a shooter comes from. It just stops us from talking about these influences -- which is usually a form of white-maleness protecting itself as most mass shooters  are both white and male. 

The Grim Sleeper, to me, is clearly both mentally ill and responsible his evil. The community he came from was sexist and misogynistic to let him get away with it for 20 years, in my opinion. His community, his sexism, and his mental illness are part of a whole inside him that pushed him to kill (likely) dozens of black women.

But the predominantly white press doesn't identify Lonnie Franklin Jr, the Grim Sleeper, as "mentally ill" because he's the wrong hue.

Omar is the wrong hue too.

There's a lot of talk about "Muslim" this and "Muslim" that on the right. But when 9/11 happened "Muslim" was interchangeable with "Arab" which was interchangeable with "not white."

So this is not about religion. And those screaming about "Muslim this and "Muslim That" don't think this is about religion either. The proof of this lies in the fact that Donald Trump is screaming loudest about "Muslims" right now, and he never thought about being a Christian or a Jew or anything that believes in God, not one time. 

So does a Muslim shooter, a non-white shooter, in the United States get to be "mentally ill" like white supremacist shooter, Wade Michael Page, at the Sikh Temple?  

Will we ever investigate Omar Mateen
as a mentally ill person,
acting on the high levels of homophobia
always accessible in America, 
who had easy access to the same gun,
that killed two dozen Children at Sandy Hook,

after letting the Assault Weapons ban expire in 2004,

and also after the Senate failed to even consider a replacement Under Secretary for Finance and Terrorism for the best part of a year after President Obama nominated him - despite his having worked for Republican Administrations?

I'm just wondering. Aren't you?
