When the white south lost Civil War, they put up a bunch of statues and monuments to honor their slave protecting heros. When the entire white country lost the battle against battle against official Jim Crow in the South and unofficial Jim Crow in the North, the east coast felt it most and confederate statue building engine revved up again

And Robert E Lee --the man who's visage is on the statue in question in Charlottesville-- was against statue and monument building because it would keep wounds open.
Ain't that something! (Whatever. He fought for slavery)
