AS THE MEDIA TURNS ON KELLY, THE FAR RIGHT FALLS IN LOVE

In a telling twist, the vast right-wing-media universe was mostly silent this week as mainstream news organizations—CNN, NBC, ABC—devoted wall-to-wall coverage to news that John Kelly had sought to protect Staff Secretary Rob Porter from allegations that he had violently assaulted both of his ex-wives. Kelly, as my colleague Gabriel Sherman reported, had known of the claims against his right-hand man in the West Wing for months.

He only walked back his defense of Porter, and issued a clumsy statement saying that he had taken

As Porter’s ex-wives came forward with
 horrifically detailed allegations about their own ordeals; Porter’s former girlfriend said she had suffered similar abuse; and Hope Hicks, who Porter is currently dating, was drawn into the line of fire, speculation abounded as to whether the fiasco would mean Kelly’s resignation, or at least his diminution within the White House, where Donald Trump
 was said to be furious over the affair.
