REST IN POWER WINNIE MANDELA

Regardless of what questionable actions she took while her husband was in jail and how she handled affluence and power once she got him out of jail, she is arguably responsible for freeing black South Africans.

Black people are a numerical majority in South African. Yet, during South Africa's apartheid they were being treated worse than blacks here were treated in the south under Jim Crow.

Winnie Mandela kept the fight against apartheid going for 27 years  while Nelson Mandela was in prison.

When the battle against apartheid reached it peak in the 1980s,  the world took notice and started boycotting South Africa and its products in earnest -- all this despite attempts by Ronald Reagan to defend White South Africans. Eventually Nelson Mandela was released.

But it was not white guilt or an attack of conscience that made White South Africa release Nelson from prison or Black South Africans from the white supremacist cage they had blacks in. It was pressure. And that pressure came from Winnie Mandela and the African National Congress (ANC).

When Nelson Mandela was released he approached whites with peace and reconciliation. He was more realistic than Winnie as to what was possible without further bloodshed.

Winnie Mandela, on the other hand, wanted to take back everything that had been stolen, no matter what it took. She appeared to want to treat white people in the same manner as they would treat blacks if positions were reversed. To me, this is completely understandable. She had been waging war trying to end apartheid for 27 years  And when you're waging war, you want a clear and undeniable win.

While Winnie was waging war, Nelson was sitting in jail having to be more philosophical about life and how to move forward in order to survive physically and psychologically while in prison.  So Winnie being very different from Nelson when he left prison was disappointing but not at all surprising.

Nothing about what Winnie Mandela did before, during, or after Nelson Mandela was released from prison is that surprising. But it ought to be surprising that she doesn't get more credit for freeing black South Africa from white rule.

Rest In Power Winnie Mandela.

And Thank You.
