WANNA FIND OUT HOW BIASED IN FAVOR OF WHITENESS YOU ARE?

In the United States, that's pretty much what's being measured in Havard's Implicit Bias test. Most people, regardless of skin color, find out that they are biased in favor of whiteness.

This is an ugly discovery for most black and brown people.

But let me say this again:

We are all being bombarded by messages of white supremacy everyday.  Even being erased in movies, television, books, etc is a form of saying "white people are the only good people here." Therefore it shouldn't be a surprise when bombarded black and brown people express white supremacy.
Furthermore, the higher some climb on the success ladder constructed in one of white supremacy's most successful workshops, the United States, the more beneficial some black and brown people find it to believe in white supremacy's low view of other black and brown people. Therefore, the words coming out of the Bill Cosbys, Whoopi Goldbergs, and Anthony Mackies should not surprise you.

But it may surprise some average black and brown folks to learn just how biased in favor or whiteness they themselves are.

I took the test and scored well, only slightly in favor of whiteness. I scored better than a black sociology professor of mine. But I've always tested well and had a job where I have to think very fast -- and the fast part is probably the key to scoring well. I had ample time to think about what the answer SHOULD BE rather than give a true, heartfelt answer. So my score doesn't mean much since I've studied sociology extensively.

But maybe you should take the test to get a ballpark idea of where you stand?

IMPLICIT BIAS AMONG POLICE within the PATRIARCHAL WHITE SUPREMACY SYSTEM

Feeling Rebloggy

"We all have implicit biases whereby we link groups to stereotypes, possibly producing discriminatory behaviour - even in individuals who are totally against prejudice."
... A Department of Justice report released in March looking at the use of deadly force by Philadelphia police, supports the idea that police are susceptible to implicit bias:

"One of the things they looked at is what they called threat perception failure. The officer believed that the person was armed and it turned out not to be the case. And these failures were more likely to occur when the subject was black [even if the officers were themselves black or Latino].

MIAMI POLICE SHOOT UNARMED MAN, LYING DOWN WITH HANDS UP

Feeling Rebloggy

"I’m saying,

‘Sir, why did you shoot me?’

and his words to me,

he said, ‘I don’t know.' "

Charles Kinsey is lucky to be alive. He is one of the few to survive such an encounter with police

"Cellphone video was released Wednesday afternoon showing Charles Kinsey lying on the ground with his hands in the air, telling officers that weapons are not necessary. “When I went to the ground, I’m going to the ground just like this here with my hands up,” Kinsey said, “and I am laying down here just like this, and I’m telling them again, ‘Sir, there is no need for firearms. I’m unarmed, he’s an autistic guy. He got a toy truck in his hand.”

...The ordeal went on for a few minutes before Kinsey said one of the officers shot him. “I’m like this right here, and when he shot me, it was so surprising,” Kinsey said. “It was like a mosquito bite, and when it hit me, I’m like, ‘I still got my hands in the air, and I said, ‘No I just got shot! And I’m saying, ‘Sir, why did you shoot me?’ and his words to me, he said, ‘I don’t know.'”

THE MENTALLY ILL FRINGE DWELLER IN DALLAS

The military veteran shooter of the Dallas Police, diagnosed or not, is one of the mentally ill fringe of the black community, someone that has been reading about and seeing videos of white cops murdering black people for no good reason. And I was relatively certain of this before the Dallas Police Chief said Micah Johnson, the shooter of 5 police officers, seemed delusional and wrote crypic messages in his own blood before he was killed.

The reason I was sure that the shooter was mentally ill is because after hearing about Alton Sterling then Philando Castile in less than 24 hours, and that was just a few months after hearing that Yvette Smith's cop murderer walked away too, a lot of the mentally-sound black women I know have expressed a desire to want to crawl into bed, pull the sheets over their heads, and stay there forever.

Me too.

So I figured it was a matter of time before somebody mentally-ill and black (for a change) snapped after decades* of police thuggery that has only recently started making the national news --thanks to Black Lives Matter.

And here we all are.

The first thing I thought of when I heard that white people wanted to blame The Black Lives Matter Movement for Johnson's actions, was how much Micah Johnson probably had in common with the very white anti-abortion movement that wound up having
mostly white anti-abortion crazies who bombed and shot up abortion doctors, Planned Parenthoods not so many years back.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, the mostly white, anti-abortion, mentally-ill fringe were motivated by the violent rhetoric of the average white anti-abortion protester, those who used to like to call an abortion a "murder" every single time they got near a television camera. While it is biologically crystal clear that stopping a pregnancy stops a specific life --you cannot give birth to James next year as Jame's egg and sperm specifically created James -- it is probably going too far to call the removal of x number of cells murder.  That just my opinion, even though I do think later trimester "abortions" are very, VERY questionable.

However, if those who are strongly anti-abortion TRULY BELIEVED abortion IS murder, they'd still be in the streets screaming, and stopping traffic right now. The average anti-abortionist doesn't do that because they do not truly believe in the violent words they use "abortion is murder". But the mentally ill fringe of the anti-abortion movement does/did literally believe that abortion is murder and acted accordingly -- by committing murder back.

The mentally ill black shooters of police, by comparison, are not motivated by the Black Lives Matter movement because that movement is anti-violence, it is anti-police violence, and specifically anti-police-murder.

The mentally ill shooter of Dallas Police was motivated by violence though, just like the predominantly white anti-abortion bombers/shooters were. But that violence is coming from the police and those who cover up for the police. And the mentally-ill shooter, Micah Johnson, said as much.

If you want to stop the mentally ill fringe from multiplying and murdering, you stop the violence.

Anti-abortion crazies
aren't being bombing and shooting anymore

because anti-abortion activists toned down their violent rhetoric

I'm guessing, anti-cop-murder crazies
will stop shooting cops
when cop murders of black and brown is toned down.

But the cop murders aren't going to stop until white people join black and brown people via Black Lives Matter, and other organizations, in yanking the covers off the places where vermin hide.

If the white majority had any interest in making the police murders stop, they'd help Black Lives Matter remove the prosecutors who aren't prosecuting the cops, put together protests to remove the judges who kick cops loose on technicalities -- just like some did when Brock Turner got six months for rape ("20 minutes of action" according to his Dad.)

And the majority of white people might have an actual active interest in making the cop murders of black and brown people stop if they understood that U.S. History is repeating itself right now.  And I'm not talking about lynching.

It doesn't matter how few cops are straight-executing black people because today's black-murder-by-cop is very much like slavery days of old.

Only 2% or 5% or 10% of the white people ever owned slaves, but it took the rest of the white public to make slavery work. It took the rest of the white public make it so

1) the slaves had no place to run;
2) couldn't be seen on the road appearing to be free;
3) couldn't move anywhere at anytime without a piece of paper in their hands from the slave master explain why they weren't at a white master's side.

A slave had to have a piece of paper from the white slave owner for every non-slave-owning white person they come into contact with. And that poor white person's ability to demand that piece of paper made that poor white person feel like they were high and mighty, of higher status because they were of higher status.  Black skin meant "slave."  Even in the North, at a period of time when some blacks were free, they could not move from point A to point B without a piece of paper proving they were free -- and that paper was subject to being snatched and torn up by any white non-slave-owning person they met.*

Slavery didn't work without the majority of white people.

Cops shooting black and brown people for nothing doesn't work without the majority of white people either.

It doesn't matter how FEW murdering cops there are. It only matters how committed white people are to their own denial as to how bad things really are due to systemic racism, how committed they are to making sure they doing nothing about the particular piece of systemic racism that has cops killing black people, often poor black people, under the cover of law for

for selling loose cigarettes,
for not having car registration,
being at a free, loud party in a park.

Beating one's breast and saying, "black people being killed for nothing is terrible but most cops are good" is an effort to keep things the same because there really isn't a problem.  "A few bad apples," like a few slave owners, "isn't really worth doing anything about because there are so few of them." This logic(?) only serves to justify the decision to keep voting the same prosecutors into place, to keep the same judges in their same jobs, and to keep letting the police unions get away with having the city to pay for bad shootings WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS --which allows the police union to save their money to pay an attorney to defend the latest cop murderer.

These cops doing the shooting are just the fingers on the body of white supremacy. The white, brown, black NON-RACIST (I don't hate ANYBODY) tsk-tsk-er is the body of white supremacy because they are complicit in keeping white supremacy in place. The white hate groups are so much nothing, by comparison. And black respectability politics believers like Chrissette Michele help reinforce white denial of white racism which also helps keep white supremacy in place.

Only the ANTI-RACISTS actively looking for answers to stomp out the excuses can safely say they are not participating in the police murders of black and brown people.

* - I have cousin I never got to meet in this life. He was killed by police in Baltimore decades ago - 1960s or earlier. My grandmother told me the police were looking for a light-skinned tall guy while he was a short wide dark-skinned guy or vice versa. The police found the wrong guy, my cousin, and killed him for some other guy's crime.

ALL LIVES MATTER PROTEST FOR ANDREW HENSON

"Newly released body camera footage shows an Oklahoma policeman killing an unarmed man who pointed his fingers in the shape of a gun.

Andrew Henson was shot by an officer in Wagoner last month after being pulled over for a traffic violation and leading police on a 100 mph chase through the rural town."
~Daily News

I'm just kidding about the protest. There is no ALL LIVES MATTER protest. There's never an ALL LIVES MATTER protest when a white person dies at the hands of police, even if he is unarmed.

The white folk screaming about "All Lives Matter"
don't care about the white poor lives that the police DO claim from time to time.

The ALL LIVES MATTER screamers only care about making sure their BLUE LIVES representing white supremacy keep making sure that BLACK LIVES MATTERING never becomes such an every day reality that the BLACK LIVES MATTER TOO movement becomes something that isn't necessary.

Some of these low-lifes have even gone to the White House Petition Website to make Black Lives Matter a terrorist organization -- which The White House squashed in about 10 days, must be some sort of a record

AMERICAN POLL ON OPINIONS OF BLACK LIVES MATTER

The news is much better than I thought. It's possible my own foul mood over Yvette, Alton, and Philando is responsible for my surprise at the positive news. But first a little history graphic, adjusted just for you.

* * * * * *

"The Black Lives Matter movement, which came to national prominence in the wake of the 2014 police shooting of an unarmed black 17*-year-old named Trayvon Martin in Ferguson, Missouri, continues to gain attention following other incidents involving the deaths of black Americans during encounters with the police. A recent Pew Research Center survey conducted Feb. 29-May 8, 2016, found that general awareness of Black Lives Matter is widespread among black and white U.S. adults, but attitudes about the movement vary considerably between groups."

YVETTE SMITH'S KILLER COP RELEASED AFTER HE USES PERSONAL GUN TO MURDER HER

There is so little coverage of the deaths of black women, that I missed this a few months ago

Yvette Smith's Murder

"Yvette Smith was seemingly trying to act as a peacemaker during a dispute between two men that involved a gun.

She called 911 about half an hour after midnight on 16 February 2014.

When Bastrop County police arrived at the house, at least one of the men was in the front yard and the worst of the disturbance appeared over.

Willis, who is white, saw Smith, a black 47-year-old former caretaker, and ordered her to come outside. As she opened the door he shouted “police!” then fired within about three seconds... using his personal AR-15 semi-automatic rifle." (This gun is the mass shooter's weapon of choice, by the way.)

After essentially killing Smith's killer a hero, Judge McCaig set Willis free despite the fact that Willis lied and lied and lied some more. It came out during the trial that Willis has night-blindness that he routinely refuses to wear glasses for. The gun he said he saw, through various different version of the story, did not exist.

BLACK PROGRESS IN THE AGE OF BLACK LIVES MATTER

 as
Link to Part 1 of this 2 part series: Black Lives Matter Too. The 3rd Anniversary

Reflecting on the third anniversary of Black Lives Matter has me wondering if I should be happy that young black people have no real appreciation for what it was like for parents to give life, to give birth to a child while thinking that it was very, very unlikely that black and brown sons, black and brown daughters could ever be president in their home country because they are black, asian, latinx, and half of the time female too.

Every single person who was still a child when Barack Obama became president truly thinks the highest office in the land is available to absolutely anybody if they work hard enough to jump the usual hurdles plus the racial hurdles and then the gender hurdles too.  It is no longer just the naive white people, who think racism doesn't exist in significant quantities, who believe anybody can be president. This belief is a newly available to everyone. This is amazing to me. It should be amazing to everyone because this is a whole new reality as of 2008.

However this new reality can put blinders on a black person, especially if that person doesn't have a holistic appreciation for black history.

It's hard for me to wrap my head around someone failing to understand that Barack Obama being black in the white house --even if he hadn't done one dang thing for black people-- is a miracle in itself.  It's like some black people think white racism is a lot smaller and less powerful than it really is, and that older black people were just too dumb to stomp it out earlier, too "tolerant."

That must be why some of the same people who think Barack Obama being president is nothing also think Black Lives Matter has accomplished virtually nothing. But maybe my lack of any lasting disillusionment with Barack Obama, has to do with me not being naive enough to ever have a politician as a hero -- not even a first Black President.

I'm kind of ashamed to admit it but I stopped reading Barack Obama's biography. And it wasn't because I was bored either. Anybody can get bored reading a book, even "an important book." I stopped reading because of the way he justified voting for a republican nominee for the supreme court.

Maybe that was a childish reaction, but his explanation of "that's just the way things get done" didn't sit nearly as well with me as this would have:  "the first nominee was worse, the second nominee was a lot worse, and the ones the republicans had on tap were worse still."

In my mind you horse trade with the republicans by signing a bill you don't like, you trade signatures on bills each of you don't like when the bill the other guy wants just isn't that important to you. But you do not play political games when you are putting someone on the Supreme Court....for life.

In other words, I stopped reading Barack Obama;s biography because he showed himself to be a politician. And, I don't like politicians much.  Since then, I've skimmed news articles that all indicate that he's not nearly as progressive as I would have liked the first black president to be.

However, I never thought I'd get to see a black president in my lifetime and I never thought he was going to be as progressive and
pro-taking-care-of-the-group-furthest-from-whiteness and therefore most targeted for abuse as I wanted because I don't really believe in miraculous leaps forward as much as I believe in small steps forward when the other side is more powerful and pushing back so very, very hard.

And in 2008, it seemed perfectly obvious to me
that a first black president
APPEALING ENOUGH to white voters
to get into office

WITH

black people only being 13% of the population
WHILE
white people still have 95% of the power

was never going to be as black and progressive

as any black president I could conjure in my imagination.

So now I'm wondering what the heck other black people, the ones disgusted and disappointed in President Obama, were expecting.  I also wonder if these disgusted and disappointed people are still sucking their thumbs and having mommy tuck them in at night, frankly.

No, President Obama is not the black president I would have created in a gigantic grown-man-sized test tube.   But yes, President Obama is a sign of black progress which is dependent on a decrease or change in shape or quantity of white racism.  No, this positive change in white racism does not mean we are anywhere near or nearer a post-racial society. But president Barack Obama means I can more easily believe that there will be another black president one day, possibly female, that is elected in a blacker/browner nation, who will be the next sign of even bigger progress, not the final sign of progress - because that person will be less dependent on white voter opinion.

And then there will be another black president after that.

In other words I wasn't expecting the first black president to be Black Obama Jesus or Black King Obama instead of just plain ole President Barack Obama, running a country with a congress both of which are steeped in white supremacy. Yeah, he could have done more or different things that directly affected black people-- I guess-- but I read enough of his biography to get why he hasn't, so far.

Frankly, there are a lot of childish black adults that think 13% of black people can change how comfortable this country feels for black people sans any change in the white racism of white people. There are black people who actually think we segregate ourselves, be perfect through respectability politics, only buy from our own, and rebuild a new Black Wall Street and have it not be burned to the ground AGAIN without enough political power to cover our financial power. These are the same people who don't want to understand that political power means dealing with white people who are the dominant culture, who will likely remain the dominant culture for some time even after their relative numbers diminish, if South Africa is any indication.

There may be a lesser number of black people, who also think in a childish manner, that white racism has to be 0% for black people to feel at home in this country.

Neither group is correct, in my opinion.

Black Lives Matter is correct in the assumption that there has to be change in racial relations  which can be translated as decreased unacknowledged white racism, decreased white denial, decreased white privilege, and elimination of white shame as shame keeps the denial portion in place.

Good thing there has been some positive change in race relations. It's just not happening as quickly as we'd like.

Twenty years ago or ten years ago, you couldn't have depended on 10 percent of white people to vote for a black man much less the 30ish percent that Barack Obama got, TWICE.

Of course, white people were afraid their houses were about to be foreclosed on in 2007 (there are no racists in a foxhole being fired upon).  AND THEN John McCain practically handed President Obama the first election by selecting that ultimate ditzy dame from Alaska because he thought those who wanted to vote for Hillary would settle for her instead.

But Barack Obama still got close to 1/3 of the white vote. Always remember that systemic racism in this country is a white problem. And it can only be solved by white people. And that 1/3 of the white vote is not NOTHING. That is progress.

The other thing that is not nothing is the resistance being put up by the half, or the vast majority of, the other 2/3s of the white voting population plus their friends and family.

Again, I have to ask what

those who think President Barack Obama being elected (7.5 years later)
and Black Lives Matter's work (3 years later)
have made no progress were expecting?

  • Do some of us really think its possible for Black Lives Matter to raise the visibility of the deaths of black people killed by white cops and get no push back from the white power structure?
  • Do some of us NOT realize that the evolution of the Tea Party is white push back?
  • Do some of us NOT realize that the nomination of the overt racist Donald Trump for presidential nominee is even harder white push back?
  • Do some of us NOT realize that white people bothering to push back means white people have something real to worry about?
  • Do some of us NOT realize that white push back is progress in itself in that it indicates we are making inroads here and there and everywhere? (We may or may not slide back some, but we'll move forward again. Battles. Wars. Keep your mind on which is which.)

  • Do some of us NOT realize that black deaths by cops used to be reported locally only, if at all, on page 10 of the local newspaper before Black Lives Matter?
  • Do some of us NOT realize that black deaths by cops probably have NOT increased over the levels of 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, that it's just black social media structure led by Black Lives Matter that have made black deaths by cop national news (and profitable for news outlets?)
  • Do some of us NOT realize that some black deaths becoming national news so regularly is progress?
  • Do some of us NOT realize that black females deaths STILL aren't being reported as regularly is a fracture in that progress and in our wholeness as a black community?

  • Were some of us NOT paying attention to the fact that some(?)/half(?)/majority(?) of the police murderers of black people weren't getting anywhere near a grand jury until Black Lives Matter put a spotlight on them?
  • Were some of us expecting an instant change of white hearts and minds after  1  year of Black Lives Matter Protests?
  • Were some of us expecting that shining a spotlight on 20 deaths of black innocents, 30 deaths of black innocents, or 50 deaths of black innocents at the hands of police officers over the course of one year was going to bring indictments and jail of police officers?
  • Were some of us naive enough to believe that the recently increased estimates for lynching in the 1800s and 1900s are anywhere near high enough, considering how many of black brothers and especially black sisters are NOT BEING COUNTED right now in this age of technology?
  • Were some of us naive enough to believe that number of innocent black people killed last year is as high as it was in 1870, 1880, and 1890 (as some as claimed) -- when the vast majority of black people lived in the south side-by-side with poor white southerners that were damn near rabid after having lost the civil war and along with it their higher status born of simply being white?

Were some of us really not expecting a progression?

Step 0: No grand jury at all  (George Zimmerman, policeman wanna-be, got close to this before he made headlines)

Step 1: Partial Public Opinion Indictment, Grand jury no indictment

Step 2: Partial Public Opinion Indictment, Grand jury indictment, judge dismissal

Step 3: Partial Public Opinion Indictment, Grand jury indictment, gets to court and judge dismissal

Step 4: Partial Public Opinion Indictment, Grand jury indictment, gets to court and gets past judge, jury finds innocent

Step 5: Bigger Public Opinion Indictment, Grand jury indictment, gets to court and gets past judge, jury finds innocent

Step 6: Bigger Public Opinion Indictment, Grand jury indictment, gets to court and gets past judge, jury conviction 10% of the time.

Step 7: Bigger Public Opinion Indictment, Grand jury indictment, gets to court and gets past judge, jury conviction 50% of the time.

Step 8: Step 6: Bigger Public Opinion Indictment, Grand jury indictment, gets to court and gets past judge, jury conviction 80% of the time.

If you think racism will ever disappear from this country, I think you're crazy.

Racism always precedes race because racism is just one more way for one group of people to look at another group of people and say,

"Those people don't deserve the same size slice of the pie that we're getting because ______"
(fill in the blank with what you like)

Human beings are greedy and security driven both. The -isms are a way for a person to be safe within a group and also grab more/more/more for me at the very same time.  Therefore some degree of racism, sexism, etc will always be with us.

But we can, for damn sure, reduce racism, sexism, and misogyny quite a bit from what it is now.

So if I look down from heaven 50 years from now, I'll be happy at step 8. I expect those still just human, not yet made divine, will still be dissatisfied. And that's a good thing too.

That's a good thing because for so long as you're dissatisfied with less than everything you have a right to, the longer and harder you'll work for future generations.

However, if so many of us naysay every damn thing, dismiss the imperfect work of people in Black Lives Matter, and erase the work of black voter groups who removed white prosecutors after being inspired by Black Lives Matter, then many of us won't do or accomplish anything. Yet, I'm remember that someone once said that only 10% of black people did much to actively support the Civil Rights Movement.  And maybe a hopelessness similar to today's  hopelessness is why there was a 90 year gap from the end of Slavery to The Modern Civil Rights Movement. So I pray more of us are willing to take small signs of progress as inspiration -- or at least shut the hell up and stop spreading despair when we just can't see any light at the end of the tunnel.

Ultimately, I believe those unable to see incremental black progress will be speed bumps for some of to run over on our way to a finish line most of us know we'll never see. And that's going to have to be okay too. And it will be okay, because it was okay before -- just too slow for my liking.

If we don't want our next steps to be AS slow, each one of us is going to have to look in the mirror and figure out why we don't see progress where there IS progress and also figure how our own fear of failure is holding us back.

BLACK REPORTERS ARRESTED, WHITE REPORTERS IGNORED DURING BLACK LIVES MATTER PROTEST

Carlet Cleare and Justin Carter
"The protesters were demonstrating against police brutality in the wake of officer-involved shootings of black men earlier in the week in Louisiana and Minnesota and the mass shootingat a march in Dallas that left five law enforcement officers dead.

Two African American reporters from ABC Rochester affiliate WHAM-TV, Carlet Cleare and Justin Carter, were briefly detained and released. WHAM-TV posted live coverage of Carter's arrest on social media."

Pressure from social media led to the reporters being released and apologies. But police walked up to the reporters and slapped handcuffs on them without saying anything, bypassing other reporters (not black) that were also covering the protest nearby.

Guilt due to blackness alone ... again.

BLACK LIVES MATTER TOO: A THIRD YEAR ANNIVERSARY REFLECTION

The "too" in the Black Lives Matter movement is silent. I think most people who want to know this, do know this.

The movement is really "Black Lives Matter Too"

This movement is meant to indicate that police officers cannot mow black people down at will even when black people are imperfect. If it were a given that the black lives of black people matter too, the movement wouldn't be necessary.

* * * **
Black people shouldn't have to to tell police officers and white lookers-on that black lives matter too, even when...

- black people being stalked on a rainy night while wearing a hoodie get scared, OR

- black people are bystanders at a loud party,  OR
- black people are selling loose cigarettes,  OR
- black people fail to signal a turn,  OR
- black people make eye contact with a police officer,  OR
- black people make a U-turn in a secured area,  OR
- black people are in a car that backfires (supposedly - 137 bullets were fired)
- black people who don't have a driver's license while driving,  OR
- black people open the door for policemen they called for help,  OR
- black people play on a playground,  OR
- black people sleep on a couch  OR
- black people walk in a stairwell,  OR
- black people sell CDs and DVDs in front of a convenience store,  OR
- black people drive down a street with a girlfriend

The black lives of Trayvon, Rekia, Eric, Sandra, Freddie, Miriam, Malissa and Tim, Sam, Yvette, Tamir, Aiyanna, Akai, Alton, and Philando and a whole black host of others matter just as much as

  1. Timothy McVeigh - white terrorist, who police managed to take alive;
  2. Jared Loughner - white mass shooter, who police managed to take alive;
  3. James Holmes, - white mass shooter, who police managed to take alive;
  4. and every single member of  Y'ALL QAEDA /WHITE-SIS, who took over federal property in Oregon.

I hope most reasonable people already know that the aim of Black Lives Matter is to raise public awareness of the fact that Black Lives really don't matter nearly as much as white lives to law enforcement. And I hope the more nuanced thinkers have also noticed that white lives matter more to law enforcement even when the police officer involved in the murder of an innocent black citizen is not white.

But people aren't always nuanced thinkers. Or maybe it's just that some don't have a very holistic view of their own history. And frankly, when people get angry they get dumber. At least, that is what I found to be true when I used to read my own old diary entries. When I'm mad I don't think as well, not in the heat of things. This is why I want to bring it to YOUR attention that a lot of black people are not recognizing black progress, not  Black Lives Matter progress or the progress that is personified in President Barack Obama.

UNCOMFORTABLE TRUTHS ABOUT THE DEATH OF FREDDIE GRAY

a repost

Let me begin this post a few uncomfortable truths:
1) Respectability politics works.
2) Automatically trusting black faces in high places is a mistake
3) Freddie Gray was beaten to death. Period.
He was beaten to death no matter when his spine went from 30% broken (before the van?) to 80% broken to beyond repair, no matter where he drew his last breath.
Again, respectability politics works.
But it doesn't work thoroughly or for very long. It also requires you take a chance on compromising your own sanity. A good many of our black heroes of history believed in it and used it with varying degrees of success before some gave it up. W.E.B. DuBois, Booker T Washington, Ida B Wells are but a few examples that at least tried it on for a while, long before phrase "respectability politics" came to be.
In fact, there was a long time within black history, at least through the 1960s and 70s(?) where black people would open chastise other black people with the phrase "stop showing your color." While my family hated that phrase, conforming with "respectability politics" was expected of me, especially in front of white people.
Some of what I remember as playing at respectability politics is part of wearing the white mask in white dominated circles, but that's a different story for a different time.
Today we're talking about the outcomes of respectability politics for the black people who play the game well without even knowing they are playing it. Today we're talking about the people who may have become their mask.
Respectability politics played well and played with finess before a white audience can and has moved a fair percentage of our elites, our black black one percent into the "You're a credit to your race" zone. And while that zone is a white supremacy constructed zone, it is a zone within which some black people prosper. Some black people that prosper within the "Credit To Your Race" Zone know they are wearing the white mask that allows them past the white gatekeepers where promotions, power, and profit are to be had. And they take it off when they go home,
Barack Obama, for example, during his first run for president said a few things I knew he couldn't possibly believe as a black man.
And for the most part, black voters recognized the dance he was doing and shut up when he had to side step this mess or that one. That's why most of us didn't get too ugly when presidential hopeful, Barack Obama, did not spend too much time explaining to **racism deaf, dumb, and blind white voters** what kind of truth, disappointment, and justifiable anger his pastor Jeremiah Wright was expressing in his sermons.
Yet, other black people become confused in their use of respectability politics, internalize white racist ideation, and attempt to become their mask.
Bill Cosby (pre rape accusations) and his Pound Cake Speech was a clear bid to be in the "credit to your race" zone. A whole host of people like Pharrell Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, and Don Lemon, those we've been calling "the new blacks" are really the black one percent. They've made "colorblind" race statements that discerning people of color despise and un-discerning colorblind racism loving white people adore.
I don't know if Marilyn Mosby, prosecutor of those responsible for the death of Freddie Gray, is wearing her mask or has become one with her mask. I don't know her so I'll never know one way or the other. But I can look at her behavior But I do know that black people are divided by gender, skin shade, status, income levels, and class -- just like white people are. So I know that I might observe that there are different behaviors and life experiences among black people because of their gender, skin-shade, status, income levels, and class. And, I know that the powerful seeking more power make choices for personal gain, even when they are black. And I'm guessing that Marilyn Mosby is one of the black 10% if not the black 1%. (Talking power, not just money in this case) And I'm guessing that this matters in the same way that it usually does. A black person who becomes one of the Black One Percenters does not get there by accident. These are people that seek power, just like the white one-percenters, Latinx one-percenters, and Asian one-percenters. Unlike the white one-percenters, the black, brown, and asian one-percenters often have an ethnic or race based choice to make:
"How far into the white defined status quo do I move in order to get powerful and/or rich?"
Oprah's Choice - Her magazine is mostly white. When people talk about "black magazines," like "Essence," "Ebony," and "Jet." Her magazine is not mentioned.
Don Lemon and Bill Cosby's Choices - They have made statements that indicate that they lean heavily into respectability politics.
Pharrell, Common, and a whole host of "new blacks" have made choices - They have chosen to believe in a white view of race, a view that race is not significant factor in life chances (because "I got mine. Now you get yours.") They often say things that indicate they believe in a predominantly white colorblind racial theory which has been accurately identified, in my opinion, as the newest form of racism.
There's nothing wrong with wanting to be rich or powerful. But when one is not rich and one is also black, one has to keep ones eyes open and realize that "All your skin-folk are not your kinfolk"
You have to acknowledge that some black people are not having the same range of life experiences as someone middle class. And middle class black people have to realize that poor black people are having different experiences as well.
We talk about colorism too infrequently and in shallow ways in the black community. But we talk about status, class, and power divisions between us even less. And we, as black people have the same divisions among us that white people do, as all people do. We need to stop being ashamed of being divided. Shame shuts down the brain.
We might even have less division than other groups because some rich and/or powerful black people remember how life was before they were rich and/or powerful And sometimes the black rich still get treated like an n-word in a fancy store which also keeps us unified, keeps the black rich somewhat connected to the plight of the black poor. But some black people go on over to the dark side, the white supremacy side, in part or altogether.

BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER
THE FREDDIE GRAY TRIALS
That is, black people who seek power sometimes (or often) seek to satisfy the status quo because that's where more power is often located.
And the status quo in this country is constructed by white supremacy even when white people are not even very present in positions of power
This is very likely why Chocolate City Baltimore does NOT have a police brutality rate, complete with anti-black bias, that's lower than any other place in the nation. Baltimore's police brutality rate is on par with every other city in the nation.
All of what's been discussed above is why it should not be surprising that Chocolate City Baltimore had a black mayor that called Black Lives Matter protesters "thugs" (the new n-word) And she said this despite the fact that the protests were peaceful in black neighborhoods and less so when attacked in white neighborhoods.
In 2015, I kept hearing rumors that black folks had never had that much use for the mayor, Stephanie Rawling-Blake but they loved and trusted Marilyn Mosby.
But I've been thinking that this trust was misplaced from the very first time she started communicating that Freddie Gray's death was not about race. And believe me, though she never used those words, that is what she's been shouting over the last year.
In 2015, when Marilyn Mosby pulled three black police officers from out of nowhere and effectively ended the protests Baltimore by presenting an image to the world that screamed,

"FREDDIE GRAY'S DEATH WAS NOT ABOUT RACE"

Officers arrested for Freddie Gray's death Alice White, Brian Rice, William Porter Edward Nero, Garrett Miller, Caesar Goodson
Making statements that Freddie Gray died as a result of injuries sustained in the van, operated by an all black crew, due to the lack of a seat belt screamed what the white created status quo wanted to hear a second time, FREDDIE GRAY'S DEATH WAS NOT ABOUT RACE
It's been clear to me from the very beginning that Marilyn Mosby's job, when she first took the national stage at a press conference, was to stop the Black Lives Matter Protests. And saying, "FREDDIE GRAY'S DEATH WAS NOT ABOUT RACE" got that done -- and it got it done instantly.

Some people have taken Mosby's word that Freddie Gray was given a "rough ride" at face value. But what I heard her say at the press conference was that "sometimes officers give people they arrest a rough ride" which is a hypothetical. Then she went on to say that Gray was not put in a seat belt like he was required to be
-- a rule that had been put in place just 9 days before.

Then, almost immediately after talking about the hypothetical rough ride, she arrests three black and three white officers, presents their images, ends the Black Lives Matter Protests, and starts making an argument we never would have believed coming out of a white face.
Judge Barry Williams
The judge in the case said he looked at video and said that he didn't see any indication that there was a "rough ride," proof that the driver had stomped on brakes hard, gone around corners fast, sped up and slowed down. So sans any physical proof, Mosby charged the black van driver with murder charges, the most serious charges?
And due to her ""The Van Did It" Theory" the entire country has shifted its focus off Freddie Gray's false arrest(?) and beating onto his transport in a police van that many people seem to have mistaken for an ambulance.
Clearly, the van containing the black officers did not arrive until after Gray's beating was well over. More importantly, to me and many others, it looks like something is wrong with Gray's neck before he placed in the van.
Freddie, body broken before the van? Neck off at odd angle
It is clear that Gray's death was very much about race. Chasing and arresting someone over eye-contact is quite often about race in this country. But Mosby made Freddie Gray's death all about a seatbelt and police van operators not treating the police van like an ambulance when they probably didn't know how badly Gray was beaten. How would the van personnel know how badly hurt Gray was? After all, the black officers didn't
1) beat Gray and they didn't
2) put him in the van.

While it is probably true that officers all over the country don't treat the drunk, the high, and the mentally ill homeless in their police vans like they'd want one of their own treated, that was not what Mosby was supposed to be focused on. We wanted an explanation for why Freddie Gray is dead and why broken and in pain before he was put in the van.
We were not trying to find out the precise moment his spine when from 30% (?) severed to 80% severed. We wanted to know who beat Freddie Gray to death. We wanted to now who is primarily responsible for Freddie Gray's death. And to me it is clear that the false arrest is where the responsibility lies.
When somebody robs a house and as a result the homeowner trips over his kid's toy truck on his way downstairs while holding the gun he intends to use in self defense and winds up dying somehow, the robber can wind up being charged with "felony murder."
This indicates that it is clear, in the eyes of the law, that the robber started things in motion that caused the homeowner's death. Therefore the robber can be charged with murder, as if the robber had intent to kill, even if the robber and the homeowner were never in the same room. False arrest should be one of the things that can be used to charge officers with "felony murder" same as a the robber robbing the house. But the supreme court is moving the opposite direction right now. Even so, this case should have been one of those test cases that made an attempt to change U.S. law. A chocolate city jury might have given Mosby a conviction. Her case could have been one of dozens of cases, one of which that might have eventually gone to the Supreme Court and establish new law.
Instead, she chose to flow into the white constructed status quo that leans into "This is not about race" so that the Black Lives Matter Protesters would stop moving through violent white anti-protesters in whiter neighborhoods. I don't think this case would be going any differently if it was being prosecuted in North East Texas, by a white man. But that still doesn't necessarily mean Marilyn Mosby has thrown this case on purpose -- just like I don't think Oprah's Magazine leaves black women out, more often than not, on purpose. But a seeking of power and success can wind up reproducing white supremacy when you're not careful. And it seems to me, on the surface, that black people at the top in Baltimore are not careful at all. * * * * *
