11 YEAR OLD NAOMI WADLER HONORS BLACK WOMEN WHOSE STORIES NEVER MAKE THE NEWS

Feeling Rebloggy
“For far too long, these black girls and women have been just numbers. I am here to say never again for those girls too...
I represent the African-American women who are victims of gun violence, who are simply statistics instead of vibrant, beautiful girls full of potential,” the preteen said in her speech to a massive crowd in Washington, D.C."

The fifth grader was chosen to speak at the march after she organized a walkout at her elementary school on March 14 to protest gun violence and honor the lives of those lost in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting in Parkland, Florida. She also honored Courtlin Arrington a 17-year-old high school senior from Alabama who was shot and killed in school, just weeks after the Florida shooting.
Naomi told a local Virginia news station that she thinks “it’s completely unacceptable that we are not exercising our rights to be safe at school.”

Zyahna Bryant Re-Ignited The Battle Against Confederate Statutes At 15

Feeling Rebloggy

FROM VICE.COM
Bryant’s petition against Charlottesville’s Confederate statues was cited by Councilman Wes Bellamy as a catalyst for the May 2016 creation of a Blue Ribbon Commission on Race, Memorials, and Public Spaces. By March of 2017, the City Council had considered the Commission’s report and voted three to two to remove the statues altogether. Several plaintiffs immediately sued and a Virginia state judge enjoined the town of Charlottesville from removing its statutes, pending the lawsuit. That summer, in July of 2017, the Ku Klux Klan protested the City’s plans. On the weekend of August 12, hundreds of alt-righters rallied in town to preserve the statues, leaving three people dead in their wake.
It's February, 2018 now and the statue of General Lee is still standing, covered by a black, plastic tarp. Nearby, in the old Capital of the Confederate States, Democrats in Richmond recently introduced a bill in the Virginia state legislature that would grant Charlottesville the local power to permanently remove its Confederate statues.
In a series of recent phone calls, Bryant told me about her essential role in Charlottesville and American history. The following has been edited and condensed for clarity and length.

MARLEY DIAS GOT SICK of reading about white boys and dogs at 11 Years Old

That's why she did something about it.

She started a book drive to collect 1000 black girl books, that is books where the black girl is the main character instead of somebody in the background. And now there's going to be a book about the girl herself because she was an established activist by the age of 12.

She has collected 10,000 black girl books to date. She was a speaker alongside Michelle Obama and Oprah at the United State Women Summit in 2016. That's how she wound up on Forbe's List of 30 Under 30 which lists the 30 movers and shakers of this world that are under 30 years old.

Here's a link to her searchable book list. You can even find books for grown black folk here too.

INDIA LANDRY FILES FEDERAL LAWSUIT OVER ILLEGAL PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE EXPULSION

Feeling Rebloggy

Recently, a Texas teen filed a federal lawsuit against her high school after she was kicked out for refusing to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance.

According to the New York Daily News, India Landry sat out the pledge hundreds of times since her freshman year at Windfern High School in Houston, Texas, but the senior was only recently reprimanded because [white?] school officials have "been whipped into a frenzy” over NFL players protesting injustice and police violence during the national anthem.
Though other students across the country have also joined in the protests, the 17-year-old said she didn’t stand “because it goes against everything I believe in.”
“I don’t think that the flag is what it says it’s for, for liberty and justice and all that,” Landry told Houston’s KHOU. “It’s not obviously what's going on in America today.”
Though the Supreme Court ruled in 1943 that forcing students to stand for the pledge and anthem violates their constitutional rights, India said the principal, Martha Strother, threatened, “If your mom does not get here in five minutes, the police are coming

Given the recent spate of brutality and extrajudicial killings by police, India’s mother was worried about her daughter’s safety.

THE KKK & NEO-NAZI's ARE RIGHT. THE FLAG IS MORE THEIRS THAN ANYONE ELSE'S. If they get shot while unarmed, police are a lot more likely to be held accountable because their lives count under that flag.

In a country where white people can call the police on a kid for not standing for the pledge of allegiance -- when a 1943 supreme court ruling says she doesn't have to stand -- that flag is getting closer and closer to NOT standing for a thing except white racism

US OPEN WINNER SLOANE STEPHENS IS THE COMEBACK KID OF THE YEAR

feeling rebloggy

Sloane Stephens Wins The US Open Title

Stephens, who grew up tough and has not always had an easy relationship with celebrity, matured during an 11-month lay-off following last year’s Olympics, and, after consoling her opponent in the immediate aftermath of her finest hour, said courtside, beaming: “I had surgery on 23 January and if someone had told me then I’d win the US Open, I’d say it was absolutely impossible. This journey has been incredible. Maddy’s my best friend on tour. For us to be here is a special moment. I told her I wished it would be a draw. I’m going to support her, no matter what. That’s what real friendship is.”
...Sloane Stephens was ranked 957th in the world six weeks ago, having only returned at Wimbledon after 11 months out with a foot injury

These awards serve as a reminder of just how much they can achieve...
Specifically, 2017's awards will be honoring Issa Rae, creator of HBO's Insecure, which just started airing its second season. Rae will be given the Star Power Award, but many other important women will be receiving honors of their own.

From An Taraji P Henson Interview
with Refinery29.com
What do you think is the biggest lesson you learned while working on Hidden Figures?

“Don’t complain about your situation, because it is what it is. The question is: What are you going to do about it? If Katherine Johnson sat around and complained and complained and complained, would we be on the moon? Would we be on our way to Mars?"

"We all need to stop being lazy and pay attention. As a people, with the last administration, we got lazy. We were like: Everything is going good, we’ve got a Black president, LGBT people are getting their rights, it's all good. We got lazy. And then this happened. So when people ask what to do next, I want to say: Wake up, everybody! We’ve got work to do. Pay attention, read, research, figure out what you can do in your own backyard that will make a difference."
