STACEY ABRAMS CHOICE: RUN FOR GOVERNOR OR SENATE

Democrats are doing a full-court press to draft Stacey Abrams into Georgia’s 2020 Senate race, a move that would put in play a state that hasn’t gone blue in two decades and could reshape the party’s path to retaking the Senate majority.

The problem is that Abrams still has hopes of becoming governor — it’s where she could have the most direct impact on issues like voting rights — and isn’t sold on the Senate. But the pressure on her to run in 2020, capitalizing on her rise to national prominence last year and her continued popularity in Georgia despite losing the 2018 governor’s race, is only growing...

I Don't Know How We're Going to Make It Through This Campaign Season Y'all

feeling rebloggy

In one corner, you have people who are absolutely enthused by the fact that a black woman is throwing her hat into the biggest ring possible, Shirley Chisholm-style. The fact that she’s a graduate of Howard University and a member of a Divine Nine organization (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.) gives folks like me an extra feeling of kinship. She’s been in the same type of spaces I’ve been in, which enables me to be willing to hear her out on stances she’s taken that are absolutely problematic.
In the opposite corner are people who couldn’t care less about where she’s from or who she did what with. Her record in California—especially as a prosecutor (as my boy Jason says, “her job was specifically to put black men in jail”)—rightly conjures the notion that your skinfolks ain’t your kinfolks (absolutely true, more on this at another time). For that reason, niggas are out and trying to get other folks out on her.
Then you have motherfuckers tossing birtherism into the fold. Good god.
On a personal level, as I’ve said, I’m willing to give her the space to address any and all concerns folks may have about her political past. I’ve read more than enough to know I don’t agree with many of her stances on criminal justice, but I can’t imagine she doesn’t know this either. I will assume she’s smart enough to have considered how to address those issues, either positively or negatively, in a fashion to mobilize whomever she deems her base. Maybe it isn’t me, but I don’t know that yet...

PRESIDENT OBAMA ADDRESSES THE 7 REASONS TO NOT VOTE

 Trump is president because
the amount of people that go to
Coachella decided to skip voting in 2016

President Obama's 5 minute list covered in the video
1) I don't care about politics?
2) Why bother voting when I can't relate to the candidates?
3)  My vote doesn't matter.
4)  Mid Term elections are boring
5) I don't know the candidates well enough (Google's your friend)
6) I don't know where I'm supposed to vote.
7) I don't have time to vote.

If the outcome had been different in just 3 states, Trump wouldn't have been able to put two men on the Supreme Court
--one of which confirmed a companies right to fire a black man for refusing to stay with his truck and die in a blizzard. The supreme court overturned Neil Gorsuch's decision while he was being confirmed by the republicans
--the other of which, Brett Kavanaugh, who very, very, very likely attempted to rape Christine Blasey Ford, has been accused of sexually harassing (and/or assaulting) other women later while in college.
* * * * *
In most states, you can still register to vote. Except for D.C, Florida, and Hawaii the deadlines in each state mostly fall between October 22 and October 30th.

OBAMA BOULEVARD COMES TO LOS ANGELES

Feeling Rebloggy

The city of Los Angeles voted to rename Rodeo Road to Obama Boulevard,  according to a tweet from Mayor Eric Garcetti Tuesday night.
Rodeo Road is a small stretch of road that runs for about four miles in the Baldwin Hills, Crenshaw, Leimert Park and Jefferson Park areas of Los Angeles, south of the 10 Freeway. It's not to be confused with Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.
When he was a candidate for president in 2007, Obama held a campaign rally at Rancho Cienega Recreation Center on Rodeo Road...

ANDREW GILLUM WINS PRIMARY FOR GOVERNOR STUNNING WHITE DEMOCRATS IN FLORIDA

Feeling Rebloggy

Democrat Andrew Gillum rode a surge of liberal support from young people and African Americans to a stunning primary victory Tuesday and the historic opportunity to be the first black governor in Florida’s history.

With 94 percent of the votes counted, Gillum had an unofficial 3 percentage point lead over his closest rival, former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham. Gillum overwhelmed Graham in Miami-Dade and Broward, the state’s two largest Democratic counties, by more than a 2-to-1 margin, in the highest turnout for a midterm primary election in Florida history...

The 39-year-old is the first black American to win either major party’s nomination for statewide office in Florida and the third top-of-ticket black candidate in the United States to be nominated this year, joining Maryland's Ben Jealous and Georgia’s Stacey Abrams, who's also running for governor in a highly competitive state against a candidate who also received Trump's endorsement.

ON BLACK VOTER INDIFFERENCE

Feeling Rebloggy
Many people remember that Douglass said: "Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will." But it is what came next in that 1857 speech that ought to make blacks in Ferguson rush to register and vote to elect a government — and compel creation of a police force — that's more reflective of their interests. "Find out just what any people will quietly submit to," Douglass went on to say, "and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them."
For too long, blacks in Ferguson submitted to their misgivings about the value of elections. They stayed away from the polls in droves and largely left it to a white minority to pick the city's leaders. For too long they acquiesced in maintenance of a police department that made traffic stops of black motorists at a disproportionately high rate, even though they seized more contraband from white motorists. The heavy-handed use of tear gas and rubber bullets to scatter crowds of protesters in the wake of Brown's death simply pressed the limits of what blacks in Ferguson were willing to submit.
