AUSTIN BOMBER CAUGHT

Police did not name the bomber, but two law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation identified him to NBC News as Mark Anthony Conditt.
The unusual batteries used in the explosives were the signature trait that allowed investigators to so quickly link the various explosions to the same man, sources said. One senior law enforcement official said the batteries [were ordered]

RUNNER IDA KEELING WINS AT 100 YEARS OLD

Feeling Rebloggy
At the 2016 Penn Relays, Ida Keeling ran the 100-meter dash in 1 minute and 17.33 seconds to set the world record for women age 100 to 104—then dropped to the track to do pushups as the crowd roared.

In her new book, Can’t Nothing Bring Me Down, Keeling, now 102, talks about thrilling moments like this, but also her struggles: growing up poor in Harlem, working in factories during the Great Depression to raise four kids as a single mother, and losing two adult sons to unsolved cases of drug-related violence.
This last one sank Keeling into a depression at age 67. So her daughter Shelley, a track-and-field and cross-country coach, took Keeling to a local 5K. Miss Ida, as she’s known, felt clumsy at first, but ultimately uplifted. “The good part was that the sad part left,” she says. “Running to me is like medicine.”

BLACK PANTHER No 1 AT THE BOX OFFICE FOR 5 WEEKENDS IN A ROW

And that hasn't happened since the movie AVATAR in 2009.

BLACK PANTHER is the 7th biggest grossing film in U.S. History....and still climbing up the charts.

Feeling rebloggy
BLACK PANTHER took in $27 million in weekend ticket sales, pushing its domestic gross to $605.4 million, and its international haul to about $1.2 billion.

It is now the 14th-highest-grossingmovie of all time, passing “CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and MINIONS and is on pace to top THE AVENGERS” as Marvel’s top-grossing movie ever.

THE ABORTION I HAD 10 YEARS LATER

Feeling Rebloggy

By Brittney M. Walker

Our first time having sex, wasn’t at all like the movies. It was a little awkward. We aren’t even sure if we are having sex. I’m not even sure if a quarter of his penis is in. Then he climaxes. He doesn’t know what happened. I’m not sure either.
A few weeks later, my period hasn’t come...
I don’t want to have a child, repeating the cycles that have plagued my family for decades. My mom had me at 20. Didn’t finish college at the time. My aunts have the same or similar stories. I am the eldest of the next generation. I can’t start us off like this. I have to graduate...

I convince him that we don’t want it. So I start to research abortions. But during that process, his position begins to change. Unable to hear his pleas, I soldier forward with my research, trying to abort it without going to the clinic... I want to miscarry before it has a heartbeat. Eventually, though, I make an appointment with Planned Parenthood...
The night before the appointment, we stay together, discussing our future, crying a bit, having sex. We figured out how to have sex by now. The following morning looks like we feel, dreary. He drives to the center, being supportive, but also mentioning the option to keep it....

This article likely doesn't begin or end the way you could assume it would.  I hope you'll give the whole thing a read. This article on abortion is as complicated as it should be...but usually isn't.

The only things I could have wished for was some discussion on 1) unwed fathers and their abdication of birth control responsibilities on the front side, and 2)  protecting self and setting boundaries on unacceptable behavior even when (especially when) you empathize with the unwed father's pain.

DID JEFF SESSIONS SAVE HIMSELF FROM TRUMP'S WRATH BY FIRING FBI'S ANDREW McCABE 2 DAYS BEFORE RETIREMENT?

  • "Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe on Friday evening, two days before he was slated to retire — and become eligible for full pension benefits.
  • The move was applauded by the one person Jeff Sessions needed to please the most: President Donald Trump. "

PRESIDENT OBAMA'S FORMER ATTORNEY GENERAL ERIC HOLDER SAID
"Analyze McCabe firing on two levels: the substance and the timing. We don’t know enough about the substance yet. The timing appears cruel and a cave that compromised DOJ independence to please an increasingly erratic President who should’ve played no role here. This is dangerous "

The FBI's fired Deputy Director Andrew McCabe will be firing back it seems. Like fired FBI Director James Comey, McCabe also kept notes on his interactions with Trump.  But his notes cover the period immediately after Comey was fired.

This could get interesting.

http://thehill.com/policy/national-security/378963-mccabe-spoke-to-muellers-team-turned-over-memos-on-trump-report
I only ever thought Mueller could shame the republican congress into getting rid of Trump. But this looks like it could get a lot more interesting than I thought. The Orange Nitwit is making political enemies faster than an avalanche shaving off one-third of a mountainside.

And let me remind you, that President Nixon was impeached and had to leave Washington D.C. due to the cover up, not the initial crime. D J the Chump and his number one suck up, Keebler Elf Jeff Sessions, look like they are moving in very similar ways....less than 6 months before control of The House of Representatives might changes hands.

This could turn out to be a lot more interesting than I thought it was going to be. McCabe's firing makes me wonder if somebody like Jeff Sessions could actually wind up in jail where he belongs one day.

THE WOMAN KING

Feeling Rebloggy
Based on the true events that took place in The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful West African states in the 18th and 19th centuries, The Woman King tells the story of Nanisca (Davis), general of the all-female military unit known as the Amazons, and her daughter Nawi (Nyong’o), who together fought the French and neighboring tribes who violated their honor, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.

ON BEAUTY

Feeling Rebloggy

That image you see in the mirror isn’t the truth.

Your eyes have become magnifying glasses, you can’t see past what you believe is wrong.
The stretch marks, the lack of a thigh gap, the acne that every product you try can’t seem to remove.

I’m sorry that men have instilled these ideals in you, men whose catcalls feel like crosses and lustful looks feel like nails forcing you to accept their unholy crucifixion.

They get angry if you show a lack of interest, as if they actually believe something along the lines of ‘Hey sexy’ and ‘Nice tits’ is a compliment.

I’m sorry for the unrealistic expectations.

I’m sorry that your thickness isn’t the right type of thick if your butt is fat but your stomach isn’t flat.

I’m sorry that if you happen to be a cup size not fitting for these men, there is a grievous error in your genetic makeup deserving of the title flat-chested among other poisonous opinions just because your breasts aren’t the type they want to fondle.

From a young age, you have been criticized simply for the act of living, torn down for the slightest resistance to male privilege.

I cannot bear to imagine the things you’ve heard walking down the street, in the workplace and even at home simply because of your gender.

So if no one has told you these things, let me be the first.

It’s okay if your skin is not as smooth as that of those Instagram models.

It’s okay if you don’t have a thigh gap and it’s okay if you do; it doesn’t matter.

It’s okay if your weight doesn’t fit their particular scale.

Your weight; your acne; your scars; your thigh gap; your lack of a thigh gap; your skin tone; your skin color; your height; your smile; your hair; none of these things impact you as a person, and the opinions of these men who hardly have anything to bring to the table mean nothing.

You are beautiful.

REX TILLERSON FIRED BY PRESIDENTIAL TWEET AFTER RUSSIAN NERVE GAS USED IN U.K.

AND NOW TRUMP WANTS A WOMAN WHO HEADED UP A U.S BLACK SITE IN THAILAND TO RUN THE CIA

Yesterday's Edition of

AS THE WHITE HOUSE TURNS:

PART 1: Tillerson Fired

On Tuesday March 13, 2018, Trump and company tried to play it off like Rex Tillerson was asked to resign last Friday and his exit was planned.

Nobody would have been surprised by this since Tillerson reportedly called Trump a "f***ing moron" last summer. What is surprising is that Tillerson lasted this long after refusing to deny he called Trump a "moron."

After the White House tried to make the Secretary of State's transition look less like OPERATION CHAOS continuing to roll with firings and abrupt resignations, Tillerson's aide came out and said Tillerson wanted to continue as the United States top diplomat. Aide Steve Goldstein said Tillerson found out he'd been fired and replaced via a tweet.

PART 2: Tillerson Aide Fired

Goldstein publicly contradicted the White House account of how Tillerson was fired on Tuesday morning.
Goldstein said Tillerson was officially notified he'd been fired from a tweet from President Donald Trump on Tuesday morning, and in a statement, said Tillerson had "every intention of remaining."A senior administration official said Trump asked Tillerson to step aside on Friday and a senior White House official later clarified that chief of staff John Kelly told Tillerson that he would be replaced, but did not specify the timing.
https://www.cnn.com/2018/03/13/politics/goldstein-tillerson-fired/index.html

Goldstein was then fired as well.

PART 3 Tillerson's Exit Speech
Tillerson was in Africa when he was let go. He flew back to the United States and gave an exit speech where he notably did not thank Trump for his opportunity to serve. He handed off duties the same day. But as part of transitioning whatever mess he's involved in to Mike Pompeo, soon to be ex-head of the CIA, he will stay on in Washington D.C. until the end of March.

http://time.com/5198060/rex-tillerson-fired-farewell-trump/

PART 4: Is Tillerson's firing related to russian nerve gas incident in the U.K.?

A lot of people are wondering about the timing of this firing. Well, impulse control is not the Orange Menace's strong suit. He's got a meeting with North Korea coming up which makes this the worst time to change out your Secretary of State. But to Trump, having a circle of yes-men apparently matters more.

It's possible that Tillerson recently contradicted Trump one time to many.
headline

Trump Denies Russian Guilt in Murder. Tillerson Admits It, Is Fired. Hmm.

Every Trump administration personnel shake-up is a noir story of terrible, incompetent people squabbling with other terrible, incompetent people. But one thing that stands out about the firing of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is that Tillerson explicitly identified Russia as the culprit in the murder of Sergei Skripal in the United Kingdom, and Donald Trump did not.
Yesterday, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders condemned the murder as “reckless,” but repeatedly declined to endorse the United Kingdom’s conclusion that Russia was behind it. This exchange with reporters is quite odd...

PART 5: Gina Haspel to become head of CIA?

Really?
When Pompeo moves from being the head of the CIA into the Secretary Of State job, Gina Haspel is Trump's pick to move up and be the first woman to head of the CIA....um....only she ran OPERATION CAT-EYE in Thailand, which involved being in charge of an Abu Ghraib type black site where torturing of prisoners took place during her watch under the Bush Jr. administration.

Yeah....Okay....No problem.

NEVER AGAIN: NATIONAL SCHOOL WALK OUT FOR GUN CONTROL

Feeling Rebloggy
Exactly one month after 17 people were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School here in Parkland, survivors of the massacre joined tens of thousands of students across the U.S. in a national walkout Wednesday morning....
Organized by the Women's March, an estimated 185,000 people in 50 states joined the walkout. Approximately 3,100 schools said they were going to participate, an organizer told NBC News ahead of the walkout.
In Washington, D.C., a crowd in the thousands gathered, holding signs toward the White House with slogans such as "Books Not Bullets" and "Fire Politicians, Not Guns" on them.
At the stroke of 10 a.m., the crowd sat down en masse, their backs to the White House, and started a 17-minute-long moment of silence. Afterwards, some marched to Capitol Hill, with plans to meet with legislators.

Walking out for Chicago: “I witness the cycle of lives taken by gun violence and I will not back down”

Camryn Salter is a senior at Whitney Young Magnet High School in Chicago, IL.
Salter said,
Growing up on the south side of Chicago, I witness the incessant cycle of lives taken by gun violence. It is so deeply embedded into our streets and homes that it is almost expected for many of my peers not to make it past the age of 18. The amount of brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, friends, and cousins lost to gun violence is so overwhelming that people become desensitized to the psychological burden that people not only in Chicago, but all over the nation are experiencing due to gun violence. The impact of gun homicide is bigger than a love one lost. There is an emotional, social, and financial toll, as the mere exposure to countless stories of lives taken can affect someone just as much as being a direct victim.

Zyahna Bryant Re-Ignited The Battle Against Confederate Statutes At 15

Feeling Rebloggy

FROM VICE.COM
Bryant’s petition against Charlottesville’s Confederate statues was cited by Councilman Wes Bellamy as a catalyst for the May 2016 creation of a Blue Ribbon Commission on Race, Memorials, and Public Spaces. By March of 2017, the City Council had considered the Commission’s report and voted three to two to remove the statues altogether. Several plaintiffs immediately sued and a Virginia state judge enjoined the town of Charlottesville from removing its statutes, pending the lawsuit. That summer, in July of 2017, the Ku Klux Klan protested the City’s plans. On the weekend of August 12, hundreds of alt-righters rallied in town to preserve the statues, leaving three people dead in their wake.
It's February, 2018 now and the statue of General Lee is still standing, covered by a black, plastic tarp. Nearby, in the old Capital of the Confederate States, Democrats in Richmond recently introduced a bill in the Virginia state legislature that would grant Charlottesville the local power to permanently remove its Confederate statues.
In a series of recent phone calls, Bryant told me about her essential role in Charlottesville and American history. The following has been edited and condensed for clarity and length.

AMERICA'S YOUNGEST BLACK MILLIONAIRE WAS 12 YEARS OLD

Feeling Rebloggy
Born in Indian Territory on March 3, 1902, to Joseph and Rose Rector, Sarah Rector received a land allotment like all those who were members of the Creek Nation when Oklahoma became a state in 1907.
Sarah’s family was entitled to land allotments under the Treaty of 1866 made by the United States with the Five Civilized Tribes. However, these lands granted to former slaves were usually considered inferior, infertile, rocky lands of poorer agricultural quality, with fertile land being reserved for white settlers....
[Legally unable to sell the land like he wanted to, her father eventually] decided that it would be best to lease Sarah’s parcel to the Standard Oil Company. As it turned out, he made the right decision, and in 1913, independent oil driller B.B. Jones, produced a “gusher” that brought in 2500 barrels a day.

BLACK PANTHER: THE DARK-SKINNED FEMINIST ANATOMY OF A BILLION DOLLAR BLACK SUCCESS

"Marvel’s “Black Panther” continues its record-breaking streak, passing the $1 billion mark at the global box office in just 26 days...

“Black Panther” has grossed $521 million domestically, making it the ninth-highest release of all time. In its fourth weekend, “Black Panther” is heading for a $40 million-plus weekend, which would make it the No. 2 superhero release of all time over “The Dark Knight’s” $535 million."
http://variety.com/2018/film/news/black-panther-billion-global-box-office-1202723326/

Black Panther is also doing well in China where it just opened on March 9th. It made 22.7 million dollars in one day, making it the third biggest Marvel movie to open in China. ]

Domestically, BLACK PANTHER'S success jumped out of the gate due in no small part to black people being hungry to see themselves on screen as something other than sidekicks and comic relief.

Most black folks know this. A lot of non-black folks know it too.

But BLACK PANTHER being presenting black women as true equals in a fictional world with the most natural looking feminism I've ever seen is a huge part of its success as well.
I went to the theater on opening night with every expectation that we'd see T'Challa's sister Shuri in the lab for only a moment or three just like James Bond's Q, the tech genius in most all Bond movies. And I expected Nakia, T'Challa's girlfriend, would smile, kiss, and send the Black Panther off into battle.
In other words, I thought the Black Panther's sister and girlfriend would have approximately 5 cute little minutes worth of screen time a piece because men have not done well by us at the movies.
For Okoye, T'Challa's general, I was hoping for a little bit more on opening night at the movies, maybe one short fight scene. I mostly expected Danai Gurira's charater to stand behind T'Challa and be a yes-woman.
And I expected the girlish confusion to be presented at almost every step of the way, with a man to clear things up for them same as Chris Pine did almost every step of the way during WONDER WOMAN. (a "girlishness" which was praised by some white male reviewers of the movie and unnoticed by many white female reviewers of the movie.)

But I did not get any women-business as usual at the movies with BLACK PANTHER.
In this movie, the women are women (Nakia and Okoye) and the girls are tech saavy genius black girls (Shuri) who do what they are told but step into the fray when duty calls.

Future STEM Researcher
Nakia tells T'Challa Wakanda is wrong for being isolationist at the very beginning of the film. Okoye is more a partner and protector than a sidekick. Both Nakia and Okoye have major conflicts with their love interests. And while Shuri is indeed this movie's Q, Shuri winds up being at Black Panther's side during critical battle scenes.
Most importantly, when the audience full of little black girls and little black boys sees King T'Challa making decisions they see him consulting with a board or directors, if you will, that is at least half women and includes his mother. Every opinion, male and female, is valued when big decisions are made about what course Wakanda should take.
By the end of the movie Killmonger and #TeamToxicMasculinity have been defeated and King T'Challa has changed his mind toward what Nakia explained to him in the first few minutes of the film: With great power comes great responsibility a.k.a. The Spiderman Maxim but probably previously attributable to Jesus.
The story line for BLACK PANTHER was so packed with natural feminism --even if the Dora Milaje had not been in the film at all-- that I was shocked to find out that someone like WORLD OF WAKANDA writer Roxane Gay had not written major chunks of the screenplay.
Apparently it was DIRECTOR/WRITER Ryan Coogler who very deliberately focused on having strong black female characters from the start.
Another major factor in BLACK PANTHER'S domestic success after (Massive Marvel Marketing, story line, controversial villain) is the presentation of dark-skinned women as heroes.
The success of HIDDEN FIGURES and GIRLS TRIP and almost all of Tyler Perry's less than stellar movies should tell anybody in white Hollywood how hungry all shades of black women are to see themselves in any capacity.
But BLACK PANTHER gave us strong feminist black women, women whose racial identity you never had to look up on google to be sure she was black.

ILLUSION OF INCLUSION: Paler than pale, bi-racial looking women
who may or may not identify as black, who don't have afro hair
That is, the paper bag test was not used for hiring black women this time out. In BLACK PANTHER, a black director who has a black wife that cannot pass a paper bag test in the dark, chose black women actresses that are the same shade as the black male actors for a major change.

Ryan Coogler and Zinzi Evans
With one possible exception, every big budget movie that has presented black women that are easily identified as black has earned far more money than expected. I expect our track record at the movies is going to have more and more impact.

Maybe Lupita N'yongo thinks the same thing.

She bought the rights to Chimamanda Adichie's  book AMERICANAH not long after she starred in 12 YEARS A SLAVE. Striking while the iron is hot, thanks to BLACK PANTHER, she's recently announced that she's again moving forward on that movie project.

After the success of HIDDEN FIGURES, GIRLS TRIP, and now BLACK PANTHER I have every expectation that N'yongo will get all the money and encouragement she needs to get AMERICANAH the level of attention it deserves. I, for one, cannot wait to see how African women tell the story of a college aged black woman blogger from Africa moving to the United States.
Instagram: @mamaayi1/Instagram
BLACK PANTHER should be a major stepping stone toward our diversity becoming a lot more diverse than it has been and also getting more black women's stories to the public.

DID AMANDLA STENBERG STEP UP FOR DARK-SKINNED BLACK GIRLS BY STEPPING BACK?

Amandla Stenberg says she walked away from “Black Panther” because her skin complexion is lighter than that of the other cast members, and she wanted to give “darker-skinned” actors a space.

“One of the most challenging things for me to do was to walk away from ‘Black Panther,'” she told CBC. “I got really, really close and they were like, ‘do you want to continue fighting for this?’ And I was like, this isn’t right.”

Some people put Stenberg down for coming out to say this. Some of the comments smacked of jealousy but jealousy of the legitimate variety.
Whenever a light-skinned black women says anything there's always a faction that jumps to pedestal-ize her for saying it.  In this case, the light-skin woman worshipers and colorism-blind happen to be correct.
Even a broken clock is correct twice a day, right?
Stenberg's comments may not be pedestal worthy. But her coming forward is worthy of praise.  Most light-skinned black actresses avoid the colorism conversation like the plague.
When 12 YEARS A SLAVE was winning awards, Vanessa Williams actually came right out and said that Lupita N'yongo didn't have a harder time breaking past the white gatekeepers in Hollywood than she did -- when Williams is the poster child for proximity-to-whiteness being a stepping stone to Hollywood success.
If Stenberg was really being considered for Panther (and she may not have been if Ryan Coogler has half the sense he is being given credit for) then her stepping down, stepping aside means she took a real hit to the wallet for the sake of being anti-colorism, just as some articles suggest.
But even if she wasn't being considered for the role of Shuri, it was still brave of her to step forward and say that there are places where a very pale, bi-racial black woman should not be. And the movie BLACK PANTHER in 2018 was one of them
I'm not saying no light women should have been in fictional Wakanda because there are no pale black people/women in African but because there have been way too many pale black women in big budget movies.
You can't turn around in a movie theater, right now, and not see Tessa Thompson or Gugu Mbatha-Raw on a movie poster. Even Halle Berry keeps starring in movies, which I don't get --aren't they bombing?
And the over representation of light women is beating us over the head even in black produced and/or directed movies. In 2018, that's ridiculous. But here we are. Colorism is the same force it always has been in the black community.
And, yes, we are talking about the black community because white-looking black actresses being taken as representative of all black femaleness in black male directed movies as well as white male directed movies is THE ISSUE. If this were not the case, if dark-skinned black actresses were the norm in black movies, then THIS black movie -- BLACK PANTHER -- wouldn't have been an important a space to protect.
1) for dark-skinned black women actresses
2) for dark-skinned little girls and grown women dying to see images of themselves.
That is, I would have welcomed Stenberg as Shuri if real world circumstances were different. As it stands now in 2018, BLACK PANTHER is the only movie in recent memory where a dark-skinned black man has had a dark skinned female co-star, much less have that dark-skinned female co-star be a love interest.
Prior to PANTHER the highest grossing, top ten black directed movies--all male directed so far-- rarely ever (never) cast a dark-skinned actress in a starring role.

In fact, most of the top grossing black male directed films didn't have any black women of any shade starring in their top grossing movies. But don't get it twisted, when black women are given roles in black male film projects?  That casting call for STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON was business as usual.
In case you were living under the rock for that COLORISM ON STEROIDS casting call for STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, here's a piece of it:
A GIRLS: These are the hottest of the hottest. Models. MUST have real hair - no extensions, very classy looking, great bodies. D GIRLS: These are African American girls. Poor, not in good shape. Medium to dark skin tone. Character types. Age 18-30. Please email a current color photo, your name, Union status, height/weight, age, city in which you live and phone number to: SandeAlessiCasting@gmail.com subject line should read: D GIRLS
https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/17/straight-out-of-compton-casting-call_n_5597010.html
To me this casting call looks like it's dead on accurate for how black male rappers and hip hop artists have been casting their music videos for decades. And black male movie directors aren't far behind, frankly.

When black women are cast at all in black movies they are often lighter than a paper bag and, as one friend commented, they're moving toward looking for black women the shade of plastic bags.
She's right, of course. Paula Patton, Tessa Thompson, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw are not immediately identifiable as black by any stretch of the imagination.
I don't say that to take away from their blackness. They know how black they are or are not in culture, commitment, and deed. However, I do say that a light-skinned black woman cannot continue to be considered equally representative of all black women 90 percent of the time -- contrary to what colorism-blind black folk will tell you.
In my mind, the only thing that was likely different about the casting call for STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON was that somebody white was likely involved in sending that casting call out. And that white person didn't know they were supposed to whisper that sh** only then act on it, but never-EVER send it anywhere in writing.

I say all this to highlight one thing:
Don't ever be under the illusion that black men are not dead center of the colorism debate in the black community.

Even white people know a huge percentage of black male actors and black male athletes prefer their women white or light. And the movies black men make reflect this colorism-based attitude.
This is why I find any black man who comments on the anti-blackness of a long, straight weave on the head of any young black girl the product of unmitigated gall.
Young black girls look to see what black men find attractive then copy it. With any luck from a strong-minded mother who is a feminist, that girl can be pulled back from seeing straight hair or 3C curls as attractiveness. Straight hair isn't anything but one choice of many as styling options go

All of this taken together makes it significant to me that Amandla's mother is dark-skinned black woman.
I feel like it's pretty obvious her mother is one of the people Stenberg referred to when said she spoke to people about the colorism issue and came to the conclusion that she should back off campaigning to get cast in BLACK PANTHER.

ON A SIDE NOTE:
Stenberg's mother being a dark-skinned black woman is likely also why Amandla Stenberg and Zoe Saldana appear to have been raised very differently as far as their blackness is concerned. And I think this may be because it's because the blackness is on the other foot in the Saldana household. That is, for Saldana it is her father that's black.
And from where I sit, black men do not confront their own colorism or self-examine on that score. And that shows up in their children when they are adults.
For example:
When Zoe Saldana was defending her decision to wear black face and a nose prosthetic so she could play Nina Simone, she uttered a number of things that could only be born out of colorblindness which went hand-in-hand with her colorism blindness (as evidenced by the black face and nose prosthetic)
And colorism blindness is as huge an unacknowledged black male problem as racism blindness is for white people.
How else do you explain somebody like John Ridley (writer of 12 YEARS A SLAVE) making a mini-series about the black power movement in Great Britain and choosing a non-black female co-star without the slightest worry that black MEN will rip him to shreds for it.
And just like white folks who don't see racism until there's the n-word, a pillowcase hood, and a cross on fire, black men really didn't say much about Ridley's casting choices until after black women tore into him so bad a meeting that he cried because nasty black women didn't understand him wanting to include his non-white wife in his movie.
This is why I'm waiting for Bill Duke to make the documentary called DARK BOYS as a follow up to DARK GIRLS and LIGHT GIRLS.
In the meantime, I'm just going to sit here being happy that Amandla Stenberg stood up as a light-skinned woman and spoke out against colorism that usually benefits her.
I'm glad she said this publicly because light women are second only to black men only when it comes to denying that dark-skinned black women are the oppressed group when it comes to colorism. And, I'm ashamed to say, there are dark-skinned black women who seem to think the oppression is equal on both sides of the colorism line.

But there is no reverse-racism and there is no reverse-colorism either.  The evidence of light-privilege is everywhere you look. Movies, television, book covers, natural hair care movement, and light-privileged whining about being excluded from one damn movie.

I'm glad Stenberg said it out loud. I hope a few light actresses I could name, who are likely afraid of not being black enough or at least tired of defending it, were listening.

Amandla Stenberg is as black as a black woman gets so far. She has a black created pedestal from which to speak because of her lightness. But so far, she is using it well.
