The Muting Of R Kelly

Feeling Rebloggy
Amid renewed attention on the R&B singer and his sexual misconduct allegations, many radio workers are opting to #MuteRKelly. “You have to feel some type of culpability or feel complicit in some way,” said one DJ, “especially if you work in radio.”

After watching Lifetime’s Surviving R. Kelly documentary, Jerold Jackson, a radio program director in Lafayette, Louisiana, was angry.
“To see the faces of those people, to hear that every single person was saying the same exact thing ... it was describing an MO of how he operates,” Jackson told BuzzFeed News. “That’s pimp-like quality and that’s the last thing we need.”
Jackson suddenly felt compelled to pull down a plaque on his wall that he said he’d received from R. Kelly himself at a National Black Programmers Coalition years before, “thanking” him for playing the singer’s music. Jackson’s radio stations, KRRQ 95.5 and KNEK 104.3, no longer play the singer’s music.
    Jackson’s stations are not alone.
After decades of giving the musician airtime, many urban, R&B, and even pop stations across the US now seem to be slowly abandoning Kelly, as they find it increasingly difficult to turn a blind eye to the severity of the claims against him in the #MeToo era. BuzzFeed News spoke with almost a dozen radio workers across the country about how they’re handling the renewed focus on the singer’s scandals, revealing that the coordinated campaign by activists to #MuteRKelly may indeed be breaking through where it counts: the gatekeepers of the music industry...

SONY AND RCA DROP R KELLY AFTER DREAM HAMPTON DOCUMENTARY SURVIVING R KELLY

As you may or may not recall, black feminists' #MuteRKelly stumbled last summer. As a result of some high profile black feminists protesting, Spotify took R. Kelly off its site. But it wasn't long before Spotify put him back on.

Then Dream Hampton's serial documentary came out this month and put faces to the young black girl victims.

And now we've won.

R. Kelly has been dropped by his music label

FROM BLOOMBERG NEWS
"Sony Corp.’s RCA music label has scrubbed R. Kelly from its lineup after a documentary series renewed the furor surrounding allegations of criminal sexual misconduct.

As of Friday morning, R. Kelly was no longer featured on RCA’s website. Billboard reported that the artist and Sony had agreed to part ways in the wake of the Lifetime series “Surviving R. Kelly,” which included accounts from his alleged victims.

Representatives for Sony didn’t respond to requests for comment from Bloomberg, and R. Kelly couldn’t immediately be reached."

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-01-18/sony-s-rca-music-label-severs-ties-with-r-kelly-after-uproar?

I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that Hampton's series was also influential in getting Cyntoia Brown released. So congratulations to Dream Hampton and black girls everywhere.

MISTY COPELAND CONTINUES TO BRING BLACK HEAT TO THE VERY WHITE SPACE OF BALLET

feeling rebloggy
In 2015, Misty Copeland made history twice when she became the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre (ABT), and along with Brooklyn Mack, the first Black couple to play the lead roles in a full-length production of "Swan Lake" at the Washington Ballet.

"Beyond my personal goals as a ballerina, I want to celebrate, elevate and give opportunities to talented Black and brown dancers to share the stage with me while I have the power and presence that I do," Copeland told the Los Angeles Times in an email. "And to build a structure which can continue to exist beyond me."
...she and Calvin Royal III make their debuts as Pierrette and Pierrot in "Harlequinade"  at Segerstrom Hall [...marking] the first time in the company's history that an African American man and woman will dance a lead couple's roles.

feeling rebloggy

The former estate of Madam C.J. Walker, who is known as the nation's first self-made female millionaire and beauty pioneer, will serve as the site of a learning institute for women of color.

The foundation functions as the nonprofit wing of the $100 million New Voices Fund, which focuses on women of color entrepreneurs....
Walker's property was designed and completed 100 years ago by Vertner Tandy, the first licensed Black architect in New York State, and a founder of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

TRUMP STARTS HEARING JAWS THEME IN HIS SLEEP AS HIS EX LAWYER SENTENCED TO 3 YEARS ON PRISON

Feeling Rebloggy

Michael D. Cohen, a former lawyer for President Trump, was sentenced to three years in prison on Wednesday after denouncing Mr. Trump and explaining that “I felt it was my duty to cover up his dirty deeds.”

Mr. Cohen gave an emotional apology to the court for his involvement in a hush-money scandal that could threaten the Trump presidency — a scheme to buy the silence of two women who said they had affairs with Mr. Trump to protect his chances before the 2016 election. Mr. Cohen said his blind loyalty to Mr. Trump led him to ignore “my own inner voice and my moral compass.”
The sentencing in federal court in Manhattan capped a startling fall for Mr. Cohen, 52, who had once hoped to work by Mr. Trump’s side in the White House but ended up a central figure in the inquiry into payments to an adult-film star and a former Playboy model before the 2016 election...

California Voters Boot Judge Who Sentenced Brock Turner To Only Six Months In Stanford Rape Case

GOT HIM

feeling rebloggy
California judge Aaron Persky, who in 2016 sentenced former Stanford swimmer Brock Turner to only six months in prison after he was convicted on three counts of felony sexual assault, was recalled from office after Californians voted Tuesday to remove him from the bench.
He is the first California judge to be recalled since 1932, and the first in the United States since 1977.

Turner, who was found guilty of assault with intent to commit rape of an intoxicated/unconscious person, penetration of an intoxicated person and penetration of an unconscious person, assaulted the unconscious woman behind a dumpster after a party and then tired to run away the two people on bicycles yelled at him to stop.
In a widely shared victim impact statement, the woman Turner assaulted, known as Emily Doe, described the the horror of the assault, its lingering consequences for her and her family, and how Turner failed to accept responsibility for his actions....

Turner faced up to 14 years in prison, and the law prescribed a minimum of two years. However, after Turner blamed his actions on alcohol and Turner’s father said his son had been unfairly persecuted all for “20 minutes of action,” Persky handed down the lenient six-month sentence. Turner ended up serving only three months in prison due to good behavior.

THE RAPE SURVIVOR'S STATEMENT READ ALOUD BY DAILY NEWS STAFFERS

Brock Turner's father saying his son was guilty only of "getting 20 minutes of action" after raping her behind a dumpster, shoving dirt and debris inside her with whatever he penetrated her with AND this statement are the reasons why we know who Brock Turner is.

And Brock Turner is so lacking remorse he has appealed the three month sentence that should have been a 14 year sentence. Even after serving only 3 months, he wants his record cleared so he doesn't have to register as the sex offender he is for the rest of his life.

Give the victim statement a listen if you want to know what waking up to find out you've been raped is like. Men should definitely listen.

THREE OUT OF THE TOP TEN TWEETS OF 2017 WERE PRESIDENT OBAMAS

Feeling Rebloggy
Twitter is ubiquitous and, as a channel of the year’s news, stifling. You hold your breath; you feel your way forward. It seems a long time since your timeline was filled up with people cracking jokes about their lunches.
Still, what if you could rise above the smog and get a blue bird’s view of our tangle on the ground?
This morning, Twitter released its top timeline statistics for the year: the most-retweeted and most-liked tweets of 2017, and the most frequently cited accounts. The list is fascinatingly strange. The big news is that none of the year’s ten most-retweeted tweets are by Donald Trump. Instead, three are by Barack Obama—and two of the top three most-liked tweets are Obama’s, too.

You know McTwitterWit is eating his heart our right? You know I'm telling the truth. You know that Orange Petty Betty is losing his mind, yes? You know it's true, don't you?

JENNIFER CARROLL FOY GIVES BIRTH WHILE RUNNING FOR OFFICE AND WINS

Feeling Rebloggy
Jennifer Carroll Foy won an open seat in the Virginia House of Delegates previously held by a Republican. Foy gave birth to twins during the campaign. She defeated her Republican opponent by 26 points. (Katherine Frey/The Washington Post)

Until yesterday, only 17 of the 100 members of the Virginia House of Delegates were women. Now, the number will surge to nearly 30.
Women racked up victories across the country on Tuesday, and are being credited with the Democrats’ big night overall. It is a testament to the remarkable explosion of women candidates who have entered the political stage since Donald Trump was elected president one year ago
The wave is likely to continue. In 2018, 40 women are already planning to run for governor. Dozens more are considering congressional and other statewide office bids. And Tuesday’s result has already become a rallying cry for activists seeking to draw even more women into the public square.
“This is huge,” said Stephanie Schriock, president of Emily’s List, the political group that backs female Democratic candidates who support abortion rights. “This is how we build momentum for 2018. Women are going to lead the way.”

SHEILA OLIVER IS NEW JERSEY'S FIRST BLACK LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

Feeling Rebloggy
With Democrat Phil Murphy winning New Jersey governor's race, his running mate, former Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver becomes the state's first Black lieutenant governor.

She is now the second highest-ranking official in New Jersey.
Oliver gained her new title after Tuesday's election that gave Murphy a sweeping victory over the Republican candidate, the state's current lieutenant governor Kim Guadagno. Her running mate on the GOP ticket was Carlos Rendo, the mayor of Woodcliff Lake.
The Democrats held their victory celebration at the Asbury Park Convention Hall along the New Jersey shore. Murphy won the state with about 56 percent of the votes in a field that had seven gubernatorial candidates.
"I certainly know how the legislature works,” Oliver said during the campaign to succeed two terms of the Chris Christie administration. “I certainly have relationships with 119 members of the state legislature. And to run an effective government and to get things done, you need to cooperation in the state Senate, the general assembly and the executive branch.”

A BLACK WOMAN MAYOR IN THE SOUTH: VI LYLES WINS CHARLOTTE NORTH CAROLINA

Feeling Rebloggy
Casting herself as a unifier after two years of tumult, Democrat Vi Lyles easily defeated Republican Kenny Smith on Tuesday to become Charlotte’s first African-American female mayor.

Lyles took about 58 percent to Smith’s 42 percent in unofficial returns. She carried precincts throughout the city, including a handful in south Charlotte.
Despite being heavily outspent, she won on a night Democrats flexed their muscles not only in Charlotte but in Virginia and New Jersey, where they swept state races.
Overall turnout was about 20 percent, higher than officials predicted. (<------THIS IS WHY THE REPUBLICANS TRY TO CREATE BARRIERS TO VOTING. THEY LOSE WHEN MORE PEOPLE VOTE)

BLACK WOMEN VOTERS RIDE TO THE RESCUE AGAIN IN VIRGINIA...AND WIN

Feeling Rebloggy

Ralph Northam’s victory in Virginia was a rebuke to Donald Trump.
Six months ago, during Virginia’s gubernatorial Democratic primary, many—myself very much included—worried that Northam, the state’s mild-mannered, moderate lieutenant governor, was out of step in a fevered post-Trump climate. Northam routed his Bernie Sanders–endorsed opponent Tom Perriello, winning by eleven points.

In the days leading up to the general election, Democrats inside and outside Virginia were tearing their hair out over Northam’s seemingly lackluster finish, which was marked by a number of highly publicized gaffes. With Virginia being treated as a bellwether for 2018, the worry was that Northam’s missteps and milquetoast politics would hand Republicans a major victory heading into the midterms. But Northam is romping to victory once again, handing Democrats a win in this year’s biggest election.
This was ultimately a referendum on Donald Trump and his brand of crude white-identity politics, which Northam’s Republican opponent Ed Gillespie embraced. Democrats, who turned out in record numbers in spite of poor weather, delivered....

The Minneapolis City Council was poised for historic change Tuesday as voters elected the city’s first transgender council member, on a night that saw a handful of veteran council members from across the city struggling to hold on against strong challenges.

MICHIGAN JUDGE RESCINDS RAPISTS CUSTODY OF CHILD AFTER PUBLIC OUTCRY

feeling rebloggy

SANDUSKY, Mich. — A Michigan judge has ordered that a rapist will not have custody or parental rightsto the boy he fathered with a 12-year-old girl nine years ago.

Sanilac County Judge Gregory Ross had signed a paternity order on Sept. 22 naming Christopher Mirasolo as the father of the boy. Mirasolo was ordered to pay child support and was granted joint custody and parenting time. (It's also been reported that this judge also demanded the mother move back to the state from Florida and released the rape victim's current address)
When it became public the boy was conceived through rape, public outcry was widespread. About 100 people gathered on the courthouse lawn in protest Tuesday.
In his decision rescinding the order, which he read in court Tuesday, Ross wrote: "The question that everyone is asking is 'How could a judge do such a thing?'
"The answer is that this judge was not aware, did not have knowledge of the fact that the defendant raped the plaintiff and the child was born as a result."

US OPEN WINNER SLOANE STEPHENS IS THE COMEBACK KID OF THE YEAR

feeling rebloggy

Sloane Stephens Wins The US Open Title

Stephens, who grew up tough and has not always had an easy relationship with celebrity, matured during an 11-month lay-off following last year’s Olympics, and, after consoling her opponent in the immediate aftermath of her finest hour, said courtside, beaming: “I had surgery on 23 January and if someone had told me then I’d win the US Open, I’d say it was absolutely impossible. This journey has been incredible. Maddy’s my best friend on tour. For us to be here is a special moment. I told her I wished it would be a draw. I’m going to support her, no matter what. That’s what real friendship is.”
...Sloane Stephens was ranked 957th in the world six weeks ago, having only returned at Wimbledon after 11 months out with a foot injury

TO DEFY WHITE SUPREMACY IS TO CRUSH THEIR SYMBOLS BY TAKIYAH THOMPSON

This Woman Is A Leader

Remember Her Name
TAKIYAH THOMPSON

In her own words

FROM DEMOCRACY NOW
Transcript
This is a rush transcript. Copy may not be in its final form.
"JUAN GONZÁLEZ: We begin today’s show in Durham, North Carolina, where a crowd of activists toppled a Confederate statue in Durham on Monday, just two days after the deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The crowd of activists shouted "We are the revolution," as a college student named Takiyah Thompson climbed up a ladder, looped [a rope] around the top of the Confederate Soldiers Monument in front of the old Durham County Courthouse and then pulled the statue to the ground as the crowd erupted in cheers.
PROTESTERS: We are the revolution! No cops, no KKK, no fascist U.S.A.! No cops, no KKK, no fascist U.S.A.!
AMY GOODMAN: On Tuesday, Takiyah Thompson was arrested on two charges of felony inciting a riot and three misdemeanor charges—injury to personal property, injury to real property and defacing a statue. She spoke in Durham just before she was arrested.
TAKIYAH THOMPSON:
I think what we did was the best way, and not just the best way, but the only way, because the state and the Klan and white supremacists have been collaborating. Right? So what we did, not only was it right, it was just. I did the right thing. Everyone who was there, the people did the right thing. And the people will continue to keep making the right choices until every Confederate statue is gone, until white supremacy is gone.
That statute is where it belongs, right? It needs to be in the garbage, incinerated, like every statue—every Confederate statue and every vestige of white supremacy has to go.
AMY GOODMAN: Takiyah Thompson, speaking in Durham, North Carolina. Shortly after she spoke, she was arrested, given a $10,000 unsecured bond. She was released last night, heads to court this morning. But just before she does, she joins us here on Democracy Now! Takiyah Thompson is a student at North Carolina Central University and a member of Workers World Party, Durham branch.
Welcome to Democracy Now!, Takiyah. I know you’re under enormous pressure as you head to court for—after being arrested for climbing a ladder, looping a rope around the top of the Confederate Soldiers Monument and pulling down the statue. Talk about why you engaged in this, and exactly what you did.
TAKIYAH THOMPSON:
OK. I participated in a march and a rally. And I decided to climb to the top of the Confederate soldiers statue and put the rope around its neck and throw the rope down to the crowd. And the crowd could decide if they wanted to pull it down or not. And I did this because the statue is a symbol of nationalism, and it’s a symbol of white nationalism.
And the type of white nationalism I’m talking about is the type of white nationalism that is sending me death threats on Facebook.
I’m talking about the type of white nationalist that, you know, has killed a woman in a protest.
We’re talking about the type of white nationalism that would drive a car at high speeds into a crowd of women and children.
And I think vestiges of that, and I think anything that emboldens those people and anything that gives those people pride, needs to be crushed in the same way that they want to crush black people and the other groups that they target.

BALTIMORE GETS RID OF CONFEDERATE STATUE OVERNIGHT

Feeling Rebloggy
Crews quietly removed Baltimore’s Confederate monuments early Wednesday, days after deadly unrest in Charlottesville as white nationalists rallied to defend a statue in that city.

The sudden removal of four statues, without fanfare or advance notice, marks an attempt by Baltimore leaders to avoid a long, bruising conflict that has embroiled Charlottesville and other communities rethinking how they honor figures who fought to preserve slavery.
Baltimore Mayor Catherine E. Pugh (D) announced Monday she was in talks with contractors to haul away the statues, and the city council approved a removal plan that night. Some activists had vowed to destroy the monuments before the government could act.

DO NOT DOUBT THE POWER OF BLACK TWITTER!!!

I had been trying to confirm that this racist nitwit really lost his job since yesterday.

Clutch Magazine did it for me.

This man and his friends made racist comments about a co-workers son on facebook. Word spread fast on facebook. Then word spread on twitter. It was over once Black Twitter got it.

The image here isn't clear. But the comments and image is clearer at the link below.

I just wanted to point out that internet power IS power. And Black Twitter is using it effectively.
