ROSA MARIE ORTEGA TO BE DEPORTED AFTER A REPUBLICAN LESSON IN NOT WHITENESS

If you've been reading my stuff for a while, you know that I am of the opinion that
if you're not-white,
you are taking your life in your hands
when you vote for a republican.

With this in mind, riddle me this?
When is white or white-ish skin not enough to qualify as white?
A. When your eye color falls within certain shades of brown
B. When your last name sounds Latino
C. When you are here on a green card
D. Both B and C
E.  If All of the above
I say
D is correct all of the time.
E is correct a lot of the time
A Texas appeals court upheld the conviction of green card holder Rosa Maria Ortega for voter fraud on Wednesday, cementing a sentence of eight years in jail and a likely deportation.
Ortega, a mother of four, reportedly thought she was able to vote because she was a permanent resident. She voted five times between 2004 and 2014 — once for the attorney general, Ken Paxton, who later prosecuted her, according to her attorney. She also reportedly served as a poll worker...

Migrants in Tijuana Run to U.S. Border, but Fall Back in Face of Tear Gas

Feeling Rebloggy

A peaceful march by Central American migrants waiting at the southwestern United States border veered out of control on Sunday afternoon, as hundreds of people tried to evade a Mexican police blockade and run toward a giant border crossing that leads into San Diego.
In response, the United States Customs and Border Protection agency shut down the border crossing in both directions and fired tear gas to push back migrants from the border fence. The border was reopened later Sunday evening. ...
The backlog of people waiting to request asylum at a checkpoint has swelled, causing frustration among the migrants to boil over. Some of those rushing the border on Sunday had children in strollers and in their arms.
“The longer the caravaners stay in Tijuana, the more likely they are to succumb to the temptation to cross illegally into the U.S.” said Wayne Cornelius, professor emeritus of political science at the University of California, San Diego, who is an expert on the border...

TRUMP'S EMBOLDENED WHITE RACISM AIMED AT BLACK WOMEN JOURANLISTS

Feeling Rebloggy
"President Trump has made no secret of his contempt for reporters, whom he calls “fake news” and “enemy of the American people.” He’s also had unkind things to say about women and people who are African American. "

‘What a stupid question’: Trump demeans three black female reporters in three days

This week, he hit a trifecta, singling out three African American women who are journalists. The women — Abby Phillip, April Ryan and Yamiche Alcindor — earned his contempt apparently just for asking him questions.
Trump called one of Phillip’s questions “stupid,” described Ryan as “a loser” and brushed off Alcindor, saying her question was “racist.”
Phillip, a CNN reporter and former Washington Post journalist, drew Trump’s wrath on Friday, after she asked whether he hoped Matthew G. Whitaker, Trump’s appointee as acting attorney general, would “rein in” special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s probe of Trump’s presidential campaign.
What a stupid question that is. What a stupid question,” Trump snapped. He didn’t answer the allegedly “stupid” question, but he did pour more contempt on Phillip. “I watch you a lot,” he said. “You ask a lot of stupid questions.”
He suggested he was considering pulling other reporters’ press credentials to cover the White House, as he did with CNN reporter Jim Acosta on Wednesday. Among those he brought up in that context was Ryan....

THE ACLU WINS ITS VOTER PURGE CASE IN OHIO

Feeling Rebloggy

BACKGROUND First, similar stories of voter purges happening in Texas and in Georgia too. Then read about Ohio where the
ACLU won a reversal today.

BACKGROUND 1: THE TEXAS PURGE
Lane was one of 4,000 voters whose registrations were personally challenged by a single Republican, Alan Vera, who chairs the Harris County GOP’s “Ballot Security Committee.”
This sort of individual challenge is illegal in some states, but Texas law permits it. Republicans blamed the county’s election registrar, a Democrat, for automatically suspending the registrations of 1,700 of those voters — but not before Vera boasted on his Facebook page about what he was up to:
Voters whose registrations were suspended for failure to return a confirmation postcard would have to cast provisional ballots, which are “reviewed by the Ballot board,” he wrote, “and I appoint all Republican members of that board.” His “project,” he added, “could make a big difference in the November election results.”
Stories like Lane’s are becoming all too familiar to a growing number of American voters, who are being dropped from the rolls at a rapid clip, particularly in states with histories of voter discrimination.
Such purges are the new face of voter suppression, civil rights advocates say. Unlike the Jim Crow laws of yore, which blocked access to the rolls with tests and taxes, voter purges take registered voters — often, voters of color — and make them disappear. And unlike voter ID laws, which at least give voters advanced warning, purges can be sudden, silent, untraceable, and irremediable.

BACKGROUND 2: THE GEORGIA PURGE
(by a man now running for governor)
Even by Georgia standards, the voter purge of late July 2017 was remarkable. In a single day, more than half a million people — 8 percent of Georgia’s registered voters — were cut from the voter rolls. Republican Secretary of State Brian Kemp, an avid supporter of President Donald Trump who has described himself as a “politically incorrect conservative,” oversaw the removals eight months after he’d declared himself a candidate for governor.
Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp are competing in a potentially historic toss-up race to become Georgia’s next governor.

The purge was noteworthy for another reason: For an estimated 107,000 of those people, their removal from the voter rolls was triggered not because they moved or died or went to prison, but rather because they had decided not to vote in prior elections, according to an APM Reports analysis. Many of those previously registered voters may not even realize they’ve been dropped from the rolls. If they show up at the polls on Nov. 6 to vote in the heated Georgia governor’s race, they won’t be allowed to cast a ballot.

TODAY'S HEADLINE IN OHIO

Federal judges order Ohio to allow purged voters back in

Federal judges on Wednesday ordered Ohio to allow voters who had been purged for not voting over a six-year period to participate in this year's election.
A divided 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel granted an emergency motion sought by voting-rights groups. The ruling overturned in part an Oct. 10 ruling by a federal judge that said voters haven't been illegally purged from Ohio's rolls.
Plaintiffs led by the A. Philip Randolph Institute in June lost their broader challenge to Ohio's election administration process as unconstitutional when the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in favor of Ohio's practices.
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/federal-judges-order-ohio-allow-purged-voters-back-n929526

  • At issue is a method Ohio uses to identify people who have moved and are no longer eligible to vote. The state sends notices to those who fail to cast a ballot during a two-year period. People who do not respond and don't vote over the next four years, including in two more federal elections, are dropped from the list of registered voters.
In other words, if you miss a single midterm election in Ohio, you're warned about being dropped. If you then miss a presidential election, then another midterm, you're dropped of the registered rolls.

In other words, people in Ohio who only vote in presidential elections? If they're sick and skip a single election, they'll no longer be registered in Ohio because there will have been an 8 year gap -- and all you are allowed 2 before  you get a warning in the mail and a total of 6 years is all you are allowed, as far as not voting goes, in Ohio.

The republicans rejoice every single time less people are able to vote.

Gee, I wonder why that is?

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/supreme-court-appears-likely-approve-ohio-s-voter-purging-n836501

However, today, the ACLU won a temporary battle in time for next week's election because voters weren't notified properly that this was happening.

Jim Crow style laws are mostly after black and brown people, but a bunch of white people are going to get caught up in this too. Because now that the Supreme Court has said that this voter purging is legal if the notifications are right, voter purging is going to spread across the country

...unless we flip state governments out of republican hands too.

Lesson 1: Vote in all midterms

Lesson 2: Vote in all local elections

We need to change the democratic party for the browner and bolder. That means we need Stacy Abrams to win in Georgia and Andrew Gillium to win in Florida so they can be part of leading that change.

Brazil Top Court Spared Jair Bolsonaro A Racism Trial And Now This Trump Of Brazil Is President

Feeling Rebloggy
On 9/11/2018, a court panel voted 3-2 on Tuesday to drop a racism accusation against Jair Bolsonaro, who leads polls ahead of October’s elections and was stabbed and injured last week during a campaign event.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes ruled the candidate had the right to voice rude and disrespectful opinions toward blacks in a 2017 speech.
Bolsonaro said at the time that members of rural settlements founded by the descendants of slaves, called “quilombolas,” are “not good even to procreate.” He also talked about the weight of those slave descendants using a measure that Brazilian farmers apply to animals.
https://www.newscenter1.tv/i/brazil-top-court-spares-leading-candidate-from-racism-trial-2/
Bolsonaro’s triumph will leave many millions of progressive Brazilians profoundly disturbed and fearful of the intolerant, right-wing tack their country is now likely to take.
Over nearly three decades in politics, he has become notorious for his hostility to black, gay and indigenous Brazilians and to women as well as for his admiration of dictatorial regimes, including the one that ruled Brazil from 1964 until 1985.
“The extreme right has conquered Brazil,” Celso Rocha de Barros, a Brazilian political columnist, told the election night webcast of Piauí magazine. “Brazil now has a more extremist president than any democratic country in the world ... we don’t know what is going to happen.”
https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2018/oct/28/brazil-election-2018-second-round-of-voting-closes-as-bolsonaro-eyes-the-presidency-live?

With the largest population of African descendants outside Africa itself, Brazil was the very last country to abolish slavery in "the new world" And Brazil has the reputation of having one of the most murderous police forces on the planet which appears to be in competition for highest kill rate with the organized crime there. And that was before Bolsonaro was elected president.

This isn't going to start well, be well, or end well.

Read more about how extreme poverty and rampant corruption has led way too many black and brown people ratcheting up their toxic masculinity angst by voting for Bolsonaro anyway.  https://theintercept.com/2018/10/18/jair-bolsonaro-elections-brazil-police-brutality/

Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting: At Least 11 Dead and Gunman Identified As Robert D Bowers

Feeling rebloggy

PITTSBURGH — Shouting anti-Semitic slurs, a man opened fire in a Pittsburgh synagogue Saturday morning, killing at least 11 people and wounding several others, city officials said. President Trump described the shooting as a “wicked act of mass murder” that was “pure evil.”
The suspect, identified by law enforcement officials as Robert D. Bowers, 46 [ a republican so radical and racist, Orange Chump isn't good enough for him] surrendered to the police after barricading himself inside a third-floor office of the synagogue, the Tree of Life Congregation in eastern Pittsburgh. Four police officers were among the wounded, the authorities said...

WHY REPUBLICANS MUST SUPPRESS THE BLACK VOTE

Feeling Rebloggy
Not long after losing its second presidential election to Barack Obama, the GOP, so the story goes, operated on itself. Like a lung-cancer patient declaring that it’s time to quit smoking, the Republican National Committee declared in a 2013 “autopsy” report that “the Republican Party must be committed to building a lasting relationship within the African-American community year-round, based on mutual respect and with a spirit of caring.”

A few months later, Republicans cheered a Supreme Court decision that maimed the Voting Rights Act.
Three years after that — in the wake of more than a dozen states pushing through fresh new laws to make it more difficult for African-American and Hispanic people to vote — the party crossed another Rubicon by nominating Donald Trump for president, a birther with an unquestioned record of racial discrimination and bigoted rhetoric.
This was not so much hypocritical as it was suicidal.
“An aging, nearly 90 percent white GOP cannot carry its candidates to electoral
victory on a platform that revels in the consequences of unvarnished racism — such as Charlottesville — or the terror of family separation and placing babies in cages,” Emory University professor Carol Anderson [author of White Rage] tells Rolling Stone. How does one maintain such a model for electoral success in a browning America? For those Republicans who indulge in it or silently benefit from it, voter suppression provides the leeway.
In her new book, One Person, No Vote, Anderson argues that the Republican Party’s inability, and unwillingness, to reform its policies have led inexorably to silencing those who oppose racism as public policy...

CELEBRATING INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S DAY INSTEAD OF COLUMBUS DAY THE START OF COLONIZATION

feeling rebloggy
Each year, more cities, states and universities opt to celebrate an alternative to Columbus Day: Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Instead of honoring Christopher Columbus, the Indigenous Peoples’ Day recognizes Native Americans, who were the first inhabitants of the land that later became the United States of America. Advocates for the switch to Indigenous Peoples Day argue that Columbus did not “discover” America in 1492 but instead began the colonization of it.
For decades, Native American activists have advocated abolishing Columbus Day, which became a federal holiday in 1937.

http://time.com/4968067/indigenous-peoples-day-columbus-day-cities/
Many of those who don’t have to work today are just glad to have the time off. But for the approximately 15,097 Massachusetts residents who identified as Native American or Alaskan Native in 2017 according to the US Census, the holiday means a lot more.
Instead of Columbus Day, some municipalities in the state are recognizing the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples Day. Mahtowin Munro of Watertown, of the Lakota Nation, has led the effort to inform the public about what historians call “the Columbus Controversy.”
“The actions of Columbus and his men decimated the original peoples of the Caribbean and paved the way for the genocide and enslavement of millions more indigenous peoples throughout the Americas in the coming centuries,” Munro said.

WHITENESS AS THE TIE THAT BINDS

headline

REPUBLICANS JUST LOST WOMEN FOR GOOD | OPINION

bY
On September 27, in a daylong, nationally televised hearing on whether accused sexual abuser Brett Kavanaugh should be put on the Supreme Court of the United States, the Republicans lost the women. But a generation will look like a short sentence and a region like the South a small setback in comparison to 52 percent of the voters in every congressional district who watched in horror and are now prepared to turn the Republicans out of office over it...
https://www.newsweek.com/republicans-just-lost-women-good-opinion-1143284

Excuse me. I call bullsh*t

The GOP hasn't lost jack. And you know why? Because unacknowledged, low-key white supremacy is the tie that binds damn near forever

Look at this picture of white women sitting behind Kavanaugh. And they are behind him figuratively too.

This is a photo full of friends, family, and supporters. And these white women are looking at him while looking disgusted. Some have even interpreted his wife's facial expressions as looking at him with disdain during his testimony.

But, any way you slice it, republican white women are not going to break ranks and turn on Kavanaugh. I don't care how personally disgusted they are. They like Trump because he's a white supremacist, not in spite of him being one.

And the GOP's two white women senators (Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins) are trying to take white republican women's pulse right now --so they can know whether or not to vote to confirm Kavanaugh as a Supreme Court Justice. So, in this moment, we don't know which way the white women of the GOP are swinging (temporarily).

And we won't...not until those two white female senators vote.

But no matter which way conservative white women vote in November, these white women will sashay their asses right back to the sides of the white men they are married to. Bet on it. No matter how many times those same white men clown them by voting against women's issues and casting votes that say "rape is not a big deal" white women align themselves with their white men.
White women have done this repeatedly, since the origins of this country, most recently in 2016.

Never forget that the majority of white women voted for GRAB EM BY THE PUSSY. The fact that this man is an obvious racist with a decades old history of being a racist had no impact on them at all

--which brings us right back to Kavanaugh.

If Trump's being a racist hasn't changed in 40 years then what makes anybody think Kavanaugh's being an attempted rapist --in attitude if not in deed -- has really changed?

The passage of time does change one's character alone.

Christine Blasey Ford's Testimony
She said someone she didn't see pushed her into a bedroom before Kavanaugh and Judge imprisoned her in it by locking the door. They threw her done on a bed. Kavanaugh laid on top of her, tried to get her clothes off, tried to rape her, and put his hand over his mouth when she tried to scream.
This was in high school.
But the accusations from other accusers talk about his college days (as a drunken white frat boy)
This man doesn't belong
on the Supreme Court

If Trump is still racist-minded 40 years later
then it's more than possible that
Kavanaugh is still rapist-minded.

And if white feminists
(who are not that interested
in intersectionality)
cannot convince themselves
then convince white non-feminists
that time alone doesn't change character
based on Trump's racist performance,
if white feminists
don't even make the effort to
convince white non-feminists of this,
then white women, as a group,
are going to cut our throats again come November.

Those who don't learn from their recent history are doomed to repeat it sooner rather than later. Don't say I didn't warn you.

THREATENED WHITE PEOPLE IN A BROWNING AMERICA

I've been saying this over and over for a few years now. White people afraid of the demographic shift toward black and brown are at the heart of the vitriol in our politics.

From Vox
In 2008, Barack Obama held up change as a beacon, attaching to it another word, a word that channeled everything his young and diverse coalition saw in his rise and their newfound political power: hope. An America that would elect a black man president was an America in which a future was being written that would read thrillingly different from our past.
In 2016, Donald Trump wielded that same sense of change as a threat; he was the revanchist voice of those who yearned to make America the way it was before, to make it great again.
That was the impulse that connected the wall to keep Mexicans out, the ban to keep Muslims away, the birtherism meant to prove Obama couldn’t possibly be a legitimate president. An America that would elect Donald Trump president was an America in which a future was being written that could read thrillingly similar to our past.
This is the core cleavage of our politics, and it reflects the fundamental reality of our era: America is changing, and fast. According to the Census Bureau, 2013 marked the first yearthat a majority of US infants under the age of 1 were nonwhite. The announcement, made during the second term of the nation’s first African-American president, was not a surprise.
Demographers had been predicting such a tipping point for years, and they foresaw more to come.
And it is THIS that Bernie and his bro-s keeping trying to cover up with the *white working class people were desperate for change so they voted for Trump* bullsh**" Study after study came out after the 2016 election. And what prompted Trumpthuglicans to vote for Trump was maintaining white supremacy.
To be more specific, it's the white supremacy failing that's brought back overt racism in a big way. White people are going to fail at being numerically superior and that is scaring them.
And a scared dominating demographic is a dangerous demographic.
Cops, as the leading edge of white supremacy, keep the world order as it "should be." It is no accident we're seeing so many white people harass and kill black and brown people while police (then prosecutors and judges) standby and watch it, then endorse it.
These MAGA Maggots are trying to hold the white line.

And the political leaders among them are completely aware of this, even if the run-of-the-mill Trumpthugican doesn't know he or she is motivated by protecting white supremacy. The average Trumpthuglican thinks their motivations regarding immigration are based on "law and order."

Well white republicans have been beating the law-and-order drum forever and it seems like the laws they want ordered have to do with black and brown people. For example, black and brown crack addicts were the weakest scum of the earth. But now that white mommy's are passing out in grocery stores while their toddler tries to wake them up, now drug addiction is a "disease" and people need help -- instead of a mandatory prison sentence for 5 grams.

New rules slashing crack cocaine sentences go into effect(2011)

https://www.cnn.com/2011/11/01/justice/crack-cocaine-sentencing/index.html
Fear Of A Black And Brown Planet (and Country) is why Steve Bannon is pushing folks to tell Trump to make immigration and his wall a big deal again. Bannon and Trump, both, know that stoking the fears of white supremacists (his base) will energize them to vote in November.
We, the coalition of black, brown, and just 1/3rd of white people, have to be energized back and overwhelm them at the voting booths come November 2018 and again in November 2020.

A little less than 2/3rds of white people voted for an obvious white supremacist. Black and brown people are in a political battle for our lives and the people we have as leaders are Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. It's as critical we get rid of these spineless poll-readers as it is we get rid of all the republicans we can.

Anybody who pretended to NOT KNOW "Trump is a racist" until Charlottesville and STILL cannot string those four words together in public is too weak to lead anybody anywhere.
We have republicans AND democrats to drive out of office.
