A peaceful march by Central American migrants waiting at the southwestern United States border veered out of control on Sunday afternoon, as hundreds of people tried to evade a Mexican police blockade and run toward a giant border crossing that leads into San Diego.

In response, the United States Customs and Border Protection agency shut down the border crossing in both directions and fired tear gas to push back migrants from the border fence. The border was reopened later Sunday evening. ... 

The backlog of people waiting to request asylum at a checkpoint has swelled, causing frustration among the migrants to boil over. Some of those rushing the border on Sunday had children in strollers and in their arms.

“The longer the caravaners stay in Tijuana, the more likely they are to succumb to the temptation to cross illegally into the U.S.” said Wayne Cornelius, professor emeritus of political science at the University of California, San Diego, who is an expert on the border...

CELEBRATING INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S DAY INSTEAD OF COLUMBUS DAY THE START OF COLONIZATION

Each year, more cities, states and universities opt to celebrate an alternative to Columbus Day: Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Instead of honoring Christopher Columbus, the Indigenous Peoples’ Day recognizes Native Americans, who were the first inhabitants of the land that later became the United States of America. Advocates for the switch to Indigenous Peoples Day argue that Columbus did not “discover” America in 1492 but instead began the colonization of it. 

For decades, Native American activists have advocated abolishing Columbus Day, which became a federal holiday in 1937.

 Many of those who don’t have to work today are just glad to have the time off. But for the approximately 15,097 Massachusetts residents who identified as Native American or Alaskan Native in 2017 according to the US Census, the holiday means a lot more. 

Instead of Columbus Day, some municipalities in the state are recognizing the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples Day. Mahtowin Munro of Watertown, of the Lakota Nation, has led the effort to inform the public about what historians call “the Columbus Controversy.”

“The actions of Columbus and his men decimated the original peoples of the Caribbean and paved the way for the genocide and enslavement of millions more indigenous peoples throughout the Americas in the coming centuries,” Munro said.

a barren tent city on a sprawling patch of desert in West Texas. 

Until now, most undocumented children being held by federal immigration authorities had been housed in private foster homes or shelters, sleeping two or three to a room. They received formal schooling and regular visits with legal representatives assigned to their immigration cases. 

But in the rows of sand-colored tents in Tornillo, Tex., children in groups of 20, separated by gender, sleep lined up in bunks. There is no school: The children are given workbooks that they have no obligation to complete. Access to legal services is limited. 

These midnight voyages are playing out across the country, as the federal government struggles to find room for more than 13,000 detained migrant children — the largest population ever — whose numbers have increased more than fivefold since last year...

In the Jim Crow South, white folks would "legally" steal black children and keep them for the welfare of the child when black parents couldn't establish a domicile free labor.

The next big story we're going to hear on these children may be they have the children working, much like they do adult prisoners, for 10 cents an hour so they can help pay for their own upkeep or put some money on their own "commissary" --while simultaneously saving some corporation millions of dollars on labor.

Isn't this where this is headed? Isn't it? These kids aren't white or white enough and don't look a thing like Trump's young son. Since they're not in any great hurry to either return the children to their parents or temporarily situate them in foster care while they find their parents, what else is the next big idea going to look like?

Being partially Malaysian and partially White, Golding has received criticism over the role which some argued should have gone to a fully Asian actor... 

According to Golding, he is not angered by the criticisms, saying that he agrees that discussions on whitewashing should continue “because it kind of just shows the studios that we’re watching; we’re very aware of how we want our films to tell authentic stories now.”

I'm glad the movie, Crazy Rich Asians is out. I'm glad an movie led by Asians is making big money. But I'm sad the casting was done in this way, that they couldn't find a non-biracial looking Asian man to play the lead role.

But I'm also glad black women aren't the only ones who that Hollywood does not allow to come through unless they look white enough.

Frankly, I'm sick and tired of light skinned black women talking about how black they are whenever the subject of light privilege in Hollywood comes up -- as if any body ACTUALLY cares about their racial identity. That's a personal problem. You either know and believe you are black (or know that you are Asian) or YOU DON'T --no matter what your biological mixture is.

I don't know about Asian people, but most black people are "mixed" or "bi-racial" or "tri-racial" because most of us have white, rapist slave masters in our heirs SOMEwhere. Bi-racial black folks, as the RECENTLY "mixed,"  may have a higher number of white ancestors due that one white parent.

It seems to me bi-racial black people are mostly fighting a culture battle --because most of them don't look any different than my light-skinned cousins (who have two medium-to-light-skinned black parents, if they're not a genetic throw back of some kind.)

But by discussing RACIAL IDENTITY instead of white Hollywood (and too often Black Male Hollywood) is ALWAYS choosing the whitest looking, most bi-racial looking women of color they can find to star in movies, many of these bi-racial actresses (and now actors) are showing us that they aren't on anybody's side but their own. Zendaya, for example, is one of the very few bi-racial and/or very pale black women who come clean about their light-privilege in Hollywood.

AT LEAST this dude, Golding, has had the decency to say the discussion is important, that it shows White Hollywood that we're watching them. It may be lip service on his part, but it was decent lip service.

Some people who broadcast crap like this expressed in places like FAUX NEWS seem to think people are running here because the cable TV is better.

They are running for their lives, for their children's lives. In South America people come to their houses and make their sons child soldiers at 8 years old. Refuse? The whole family is killed. Girls can be forced into sexual slavery at 10 years old. Refuse? The whole family is killed

So asylum seekers run. 

There was a report of an interview done with one woman on ABC NEWS. When a woman was asked if she would have come here if she knew her children were going to be taken by the United States. She reportedly threw up her arms and said, "What choice did I have? If I stayed in my country, I would have been killed. My son might have been killed."

But even regarding THE NON-Asylum seekers who cross illegally...What kind of monsters abuse children to make a point with their parents? I'll tell you who. White supremacists who view everybody that's either NOT WHITE or that doesn't speak English as subhuman.

Please understand this: A person's skin can be white as snow. If the that person doesn't speak English as their first language, the white supremacist in the United States does not see that person as "WHITE" If you're confused about this, just look at how Puerto Ricans are still being ignored after the hurricanes.

Malignant white supremacy is the ONLY WAY any of this seems even quasi-reasonable. We can't have open boarders, but this is immoral any way you slice it. 

Some of these children's parents have already been deported. But their children are STILL HERE. These children are going to be scarred for life.

We have to stop this. If you don't, new horrors are coming for you and yours. I promise you this is true. 

This is NOT a one-off. White supremacists understand that the white population is going to be out-numbered sometime before 2060. This inhumane immigration policy is not even close to their last shotgun blast. Trump and his Trumpanzees are coming for anybody not-white. They're going crazy over rich black men kneeling during a national anthem. Furthermore, white people may be last on the firing line, but they are going to get caught up too because the history of the world shows us that this is always how these things go. 

None of us will be safe if we let this continue.

"Yesterday, I met with a mother whose 5-year-old son was literally pulled out of her arms by a Border Patrol Officer while she and her son cried and begged for him not to be taken. She is an asylum seeker who fled death threats in her country. 

She has not seen or spoken to her son in weeks. 

This mother recounted the story of her son being taken, stone faced, clearly unable to begin to access the emotions under the surface. It was the lowest, saddest, most distressing moment of my career as an immigration lawyer.

I chose to be an immigration attorney after my first experience as a law student in the immigration clinic. I was asked to do an intake with a family of Iraqi asylum seekers who were being detained with their 5-month-old daughter. The baby was wearing a prison-issued onesie. Her mother asked me to hold her, because I smelled like the outside world. All along, that moment has been my marker of the lowest moment, the catalyst for my career.

Yet that was nothing compared to what is happening today.

I am writing to share with you what I am seeing so that you can be informed and take action. I want to help you know the background and combat the arguments that these parents chose this for their children, that they brought it on themselves. And to combat the lies coming from the Administration, claiming there is no choice in whether to enact the policy of separation.

There is a fundamental principal of international law which arose after World War II: the concept of a refugee – a person deserving of protection because she is unsafe in her country due to persecution in her country based on her race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. 

The United States Government has recognized its responsibility in protecting refugees for almost seventy years – in international treaties and in our own laws. Whatever your politics, it is an absolute and undeniable fact that the US must protect asylum seekers under its international treaty and internal legal obligations. (I am avoiding citations and legalese in this article because I want it to be readable, but I can easily provide citations for anything written here.)

In the last decade, the political situation in Central America has deteriorated. Gangs and drug cartels have taken power and the governments of Central America, particularly in the northern triangle of Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, are unable to protect their citizens. People are being extorted and required to make regular payments to gang members. If they refuse, they or their family members are murdered. 

• Boys as young as eight years old are forced into the gangs. If they or their parents refuse, they are murdered. 
• Young girls are forced to become the property of gang members and treated as sex slaves. If they or their families refuse, they are murdered. 
• The police are unable to help, and in many cases have themselves been infiltrated with gang members, so that making a police report brings more danger. Parents are fleeing and bringing their children here to rescue them from rape and murder.

When an asylum seeker wants to come to the United States, she has two choices:

• come to the bridge to ask for asylum, or 
• sneak into the country. 

Why sneak in?

Well, because border patrol officers often don’t permit people to seek asylum. They tell them to turnaround, we aren’t accepting asylum seekers.

In fact, now border patrol officers are patrolling the Mexican territory in front of the borders to keep asylum seekers from even crossing the bridge. This leaves option two: the only way to get in.

Historically, asylum seekers who crossed over got immediately apprehended (we don’t have the porous borders the Administration claims we do), then were placed in family detention centers and put through the credible fear interview process. If they passed, they got out of detention and finished out the asylum process in court. If they failed, they were sent back. 

This was far from a tolerable solution, but it has “worked” this way for over a decade, with subtle shifts in policies and practices.

What changed? 

The Trump Administration decided in May to enact a “zero tolerance” policy against people crossing the border. This means everyone, regardless of cause or circumstance of entry, gets prosecuted for illegal entry.

Parents of children, including infants, are being taken to federal court and their children are being placed in custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement.

There is NO agency responsible for facilitating communication or reunification of these families. Parents are getting deported without their kids, and shelters are filling up. These families are being transferred and taken all around the US depending on where there is space for them. Parents are not told where they are going, where their kids are, or whether they are okay. If this does not horrify you, check your pulse.

What can you do? Here is the hard part. And I promise to keep working on this. Immigration attorneys can help – that’s easy. You can travel to detention centers and help parents pass their credible fear interviews and get out on bond. A volunteer sheet will be circulating within the next week.

Non-immigration lawyers can partner with an immigration attorney or attend a training (Mark your calendars for an opportunity for Austin Bar Association members the afternoon of June 25.)

Non-lawyers – there are the obvious options: contact your legislators and demand an end to family separation.

Form mom groups, dad groups, psychologist groups, contact the media, and get loud. Give money. I personally think money is best spent on the RAICES bond fund (https://actionnetwork.org/fundraising/bondfund…) where 100% of your donation will help pay to get a parent out of detention so they can claim their own child.

What you should not do, in my opinion: anything to support or legitimize what is happening. This includes offering to foster these kids and take them off the hands of the agency, donate supplies, or assist the Department of Homeland Security in any way. I know your hearts are in the right place, and you want to help the kids. But if the shelters are at capacity and no one is offering to take the kids, maybe the administration will stop taking them from their parents. Maybe they need to feel the pain of what it is to care for so many distraught babies, so they stop the horror show.

Taking 2000 Children From Parents at the Border In 6 Weeks Is Immoral. Here’s What We Can Do About It

 It may be hard to believe that this is happening in the United States in 2018, that hundreds of children are being snatched from their parents, frequently under false pretenses, often screaming, and placed in vast warehouselike centers like the former Walmart in Brownsville, Tex., where nearly 1,500 boys now spend their days. The parents often don’t know where their children are, or when they will see them again.

In 2014 the Obama administration detained hundreds of families and unaccompanied minors crossing the border, a practice that the federal courts quickly curtailed. But separating families as a matter of unofficial policy is something new and malicious, a function of President Trump’s [ethnoracist] obsession with undocumented immigrants. 

This spring, the administration ordered that everyone caught crossing illegally into the United States be prosecuted. And since children cannot accompany grown-ups to jail, people who had crossed illegally with children had their children taken away. Hundreds upon hundreds of children, of all ages, creating a new industry in mass shelters...

"FEDERAL MAGISTRATE JUDGE Ronald G. Morgan is in his 60s, with a bright-pink face and a crisp, friendly manner — though lately he has been making disconcerting little mistakes in court...during a morning session I attended in early May, he announced that he’d just dealt with 35 defendants — all at one time — when the actual number was 40. And after the proceedings, he forgot to pronounce their guilt. Marshals had already led them out, so Morgan sheepishly had to call the 40 defendants back to the courtroom to correct his error. 

These days, he seems distracted and troubled.

That is understandable. In late April [2018], magistrates’ courts in Brownsville suddenly turned into “zero tolerance” factories for criminalizing migrants, many of whom have no prior criminal record. Many are from murderously violent countries in Central America and have fled to the U.S. seeking asylum, and they often arrive with children in tow. 

It used to be rare to charge migrants seeking asylum with crimes. If they did so, they were put into detention with their children while they pursued their claims. Or they were released with supervision — along with their children. The best interests of the children were considered paramount, and those interests including keeping families together.

But now, in federal courts like Morgan’s, not only are parents finding themselves charged with the crime of “illegal entry,” but the government is breaking up families, sending children to detention centers, often hundreds of miles from their mothers and fathers, or to distant foster homes.

These family separations had been occurring intermittently since last fall [2017], and mass trials have been occurring off and on since “Operation Streamline” was first introduced in 2005. 

But on May 7, [2018] Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the U.S. government will prosecute “100 percent of illegal southwest border crossings.” He added that people who were “smuggling a child” will be prosecuted “and that child will be separated from you as required by law.” 

In practice, this means that even parents fleeing violence to protect their young children will be deemed smugglers — that is, criminals.

Sessions’s announcement came just two weeks after an official with the Department of Health and Human Services told Congress that the agency had lost track of 1,475 unaccompanied migrant children it had placed with sponsors..."

I can't find all the articles I read yesterday. But I read about one woman's child being taken from her while she was breastfeeding her. I've also read that United States officials sometimes make legal-kidnapping of the children more peaceful by saying they were taking the children away temporarily, only to give them a bath 

As disgustingly racist and sexist as this country has been in the last few decades at varying points, this is getting hella-scary. 

Yesterday, I read about a republican bill that is being put together to stop this madness. Today I read that the Orange Devil has already said he won't sign it. At least Vice President Pence has stopped calling this hellhound a Christian when he give speeches. Now he says Piece-Of-Garbage-In-Chief is sympathetic to Christians.

And I'm reading that up to 1/3rd of White Christians have finally lost sympathy for Trump.  All I can say to that is, "It's about time" and hope that I won't be saying "too little, too late" in the very near future.

Some will learn to become teachers.

Some will learn to become researchers.

Some will learn to become racists [before or after they even leave home for college]

Eastern Michigan University used to have an Indian mascot—the Eastern Michigan Hurons. It was changed to the Eagles in 1991. [But that hasn't stopped white students and others who are bidding for acceptance into whiteness from putting on red-face and dressing up as Hurons even now.]

[It's news to some people that all of North America is indigenous people's land and that treaties are still being broken. There's a congressional bill on the table right now, a bid to take Native American land in 2016]

Never mind that most Natives actually don’t live on reservations, ask yourself: Why did Native people lose their homeland when they used to live free on the whole continent? What happened? Which side broke treaty after treaty (and is still breaking treaties now – just the other day the state of Michigan transferred [9,000] acres of treaty-protected land to a mining company)?

Which side took away children and sent them to boarding schools where they weren’t allowed to speak their languages, got beaten if they did, and got abused in countless other ways? Which side didn’t have religious freedom until 1979? Which side had generations of children stolen and “adopted” to families outside of their community?
