BLACK PANTHER WINS DOMESTIC BOX OFFICE RACE FOR 2018 AND PAVES THE WAY FOR MORE BLACK FILMS

For the record the AVENGERS movie only lasted at the box office for 20 weeks. BLACK PANTHERS's staying power was 25 weeks (based on theater's continued ability to sell tickets) shocking most every Hollywood white gatekeeper there is. 

In all fairness though, the AVENGERS flick was half a movie and ended on a down note. 

And while the AVENGERS more money altogether, making nearly 2/3rds of it's box office overseas, I have to wonder about how much of BLACK PANTHER'S limitations were due to white Hollywood assuming that black movies won't be watched in foreign markets.

I mean, even domestically, the AVENGERS was released in more theaters despite BLACK PANTHER (in hindsight) being the more successful movie. 

Assumptions going out of the gate determine where something is released and how many theaters it is released in, which in turn bolsters or limits the success of a movie. The mostly white Avengers -- all the core white characters still alive at the end of the first half of the Thanos episode-- opened in more theaters with way more hype, frankly. And it still didn't beat BLACK PANTHER domestically.

While there may be racist resistance to seeing black movies in some countries, based on home grown othering (racism) and white supremacy imported from the U.S. (people come to the U.S expecting all black people to be thugs based on exported white TV) black movies deserve more space, advertising and full court press overseas too.

BLACK PANTHER, 
a billion dollar block buster, 
has proven black movies 
with hella black female stars 
who are immediately identifiable as black-sans-question-marks
can go the distance.

And I'm hoping Jordan Peele's US is going to prove the same thing in Spring of 2019

Peele's GET OUT made 176 million dollars domestically, with only one black woman on the screen for a few minutes at a police station. With Lupita N'yongo and Anna Diop starring in US -- the black women cast as chocolate-y dark as the black men, same as BLACK PANTHER, I think black women movie goers might double this 176 mil. figure and maybe help the movie earn even more in foreign markets as well.

Black women support those who support us...in spades. So, I hope the black male gatekeepers of black film are paying attention too.

And wouldn't it be interesting to see if Peele, 
another black male Hollywood elite
married to a white or light woman, 
can pull other black male directors 
who also date/pair-up/marry nearly all light and white women 
into being just as pro-black for black women 
as they are for black men 
which might stop the black male Hollywood elite
from pouring colorism-based images over the black community 
"without noticing" that they are doing so.


A movie buff, I can't wait to see what happens next for black film. Can you?

I'm becoming more and more spoiled. After Shonda Rhimes created television shows with black female leads that didn't look bi-racial and/or some other race altogether, I started having a really hard time watching all white shows unless they were family dramas.

And now that I've had BLACK PANTHER, the bi-racial black chicks aren't enough for me -- not all by their lonesome. I love Tessa Thompson for example. But I'm only going to support her in a movie -- that I'm not particularly interested in seeing based on the storyline-- if I see another black woman sans white features in the film too.

Again, I supported damn near every single one of Halle Berry and Vanessa William's movies back in the day. Their white-featured version of good looks got them cast over and over again and they broke glass ceilings for black women in Hollywood. No doubt. But they mostly broke ceilings for other pale black women.

BLACK PANTHER, HIDDEN FIGURES, US, and VIOLA DAVIS movies are breaking adjacent glass ceilings for darker-skinned black women with black facial features.

And I'm here for all of it.

Papa John’s founder John Schnatter Resigns After Latest Racist Rant

Papa John’s founder John Schnatter resigned as board chairman from the pizza company after he apologized for using a racial slur on a conference call that was set up to teach Schnatter how to not say offensive things. 

This is the latest in the fallout for Schantter, who faced increasing pressure after he admitted using the n-word and described a scene of violence against African Americans on a conference call in May.  

Forbes first reported the call, which was set up to help take Schnatter through a “role-playing exercise” to help him deal with racially sensitive situations.  

Schnatter stepped down as CEO from Papa John’s last year, after he blamed NFL leadership for failing to stop [BLACK LIVES MATTER protests during the national anthem], which he said had driven down the chain’s sales.

According to Forbes:
On the May call, Schnatter was asked how he would distance himself from racist groups online. He responded by downplaying the significance of his NFL statement. “Colonel Sanders called blacks n-----s,” Schnatter said, before complaining that Sanders never faced public backlash...

TIANA SMALLS: A Lone Afro-Latina Woman Shuts Down Unlawful Border Patrol Agents On A Greyhoud Bus

While there’s no shortage of frustrating and heartbreaking stories surrounding the actions of border patrol agents, one woman’s story stands out among the rest. During a recent Greyhound bus ride, she completely shut down the agents’ attempt to board and intimidate herself and her fellow passengers by knowing her rights and using that knowledge to defend others...

Tiana Smalls shared her account of what occurred during a bus ride from Bakersfield, California to Las Vegas. On her Facebook page, Smalls says while crossing the state line over to Nevada, the bus driver made an announcement at a routine checkpoint: “We are being boarded by Border Patrol. Please be prepared to show your documentation upon request.”

WAIT. WHAT THE FUCK?” she writes [on facebook]. “So you know I’m ready to act an ass. I stand up and say loudly: THIS IS A VIOLATION OF YOUR 4TH AMENDMENT RIGHTS. YOU DON’T HAVE TO SHOW THEM *SHIT*!!! This is illegal. We are not within 100 miles of an international border so that have NO authority to ask you for ANYTHING. TELL THEM TO FUCK OFF!” 

Smalls says she even translated what she said into Spanish, because she noticed the woman sitting next to her didn’t speak English, and she “looked terrified, so I told her I had her back...

THANKS TO BLACK WOMEN 

Black voter turn out in Alabama was off the hook. Upwards of 70 percent of black voters turned out to stomp Roy Moore to dust and hand Doug Jones the win in Alabama. 

And out of all black voters that showed up to vote, near 94% of black men went for Jones while black women went all out -- same as during the presidential election-- with 97 to 98% of black women voting for Jones.

Early polls, numbers will change...

In other words, black women showed up and showed out...AGAIN. But this time we won. Alabama black women kicked Moore's white supremacist child molesting @$$ to the curb.

And black folks won that race for Alabama despite Roy Moore and his wife dropping two fairly major white supremacy shells trying to rally his white supremacist based in the last two days. 

Somebody pulled out a 2011 video where Moore said all the constitutional amendments after the 10th should be scrapped --- which would include the 13th Amendment that freed slaves and the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote. 

Then, yesterday, that jackal showed up at the polling station, on his horse Sassy, to vote for himself. 

And he still lost

My stomach hurts. I've been laughing so hard. So hard. The memes I've seen have been so funny.

Most important though? Trump's endorsement lost. Not only did Roy Moore loose, Trump endorsed Luther Strange to run for the Senate seat over Moore in the first place -- and Strange lost.

It has now been established that Trump is not all powerful with white people. 

Then again, it has been established he is still very powerful with the majority of white people. More than 2/3rds of white people voted for Moore, a man who preyed on young girls in school when he was in his thirties.

I'm reading only 55% of the white electorate showed up to vote - but I think that's in the normal zone of 55 to 65 percent turn out.  Black voter turn out at 72 percent, if that's the right number is correct, is simply high.

Black people in the U.S. have just proven that we only need one-third of white voters to overcome white supremacist voter. We just did it in a very, very conservative, ex-confederate state.     

I've been preaching this all year --starting a third party led by black and brown people, only needing one-third of white voters--and EVEN I DIDN'T THINK this voting block could win in a deep like Alabama 

This vote should also have proved to us, to us as black people and especially black women, that WE ARE a voting block to be contended with. 

It's going to be interesting to see if the white democrats finally start to understand that we do not need win over the white Trumpthuglicans. We need to out vote them. And for that we need high black and brown voter turn out. 

And in order to have high black and brown voter turn out, we need to "keep hope alive" in our breasts. LOL

It is important to note that Doug Jones got high black and brown voter turn out because, as a prosecutor, he put some KKK demons in jail for crimes during Civil Rights movement. 

Going for the block of someone like Moore is motivation enough for me a lot of days. But it is good and satisfying to reward a candidate, that happens to be white, for demonstrating that he can actually produce results that directly benefit black and brown people, produce results that take aim at reducing white supremacy. 

It will be a good thing for blacks to be DEMANDING of white candidates in the future. As Janet Jackson would sing, "What have you done for me lately?" is the right question for all white candidates...until we can create a black and brown led third party

You know what else left me breathless with laughter and schadenfreude joy last night? 

Jeff Sessions, who Trump pulled from his Alabama senate seat to be Attorney General, was replaced by a democrat --IN ALABAMA-- where that wasn't supposed to be possible. And now Trump can't stand Jeff Sessions because Sessions recused himself from the Russia investigation.|

HA!!!

And that alt-Right loser Bannon was behind Moore, got him on the republican ticket instead of Trump's first choice, Luther Strange. And Moore LOST!!! HAAA!

So now Bannon's getting trounced by members of his own party --who knew Bannon went too damn far a long time ago. The status-quo republicans know perfectly doggone well they have to keep their white supremacy at dog whistle level.  But now Bannon has trapped them with the alt-Right overt racism....and a voting base that CRAVES MORE overt white supremacy.

But the most important thing that happened is this: 

The Senate is now split 51 to 49. This means Obamacare is a little safer than it was. This means the runaway train that was the republicans has been slowed down a little. The republicans can only lose one republican on any given vote.

The republicans have to worried about what's going to happen to them in the 2018 midterm elections. But that'll wait.

For now, I'm just waiting for McTwitterwits next few tweets. 

Maybe the U.S. isn't going to crash and burn after all.

KENTUCKY REMOVES CONFEDERATE STATUES TO CONFEDERATE CEMETERY OVERNIGHT

The statues are now among the traitors they represented. And the white people who want to visit those who fought to keep this country divided and keep slavery in place will likely be the only ones who will see them from this point forwarded.

• A bronze statue of John C. Breckinridge, a former U.S. vice president whose last public role was as the Confederate Secretary of War, had stood in a place of honor in Lexington’s public square since 1887. More than two decades after the Civil War ended, the United Daughters of the Confederacy placed it there and persuaded Kentucky legislators that it was a good use of $10,000 of taxpayer money.
• Confederate Gen. John Hunt Morgan, a cavalry raider who burned towns and stole horses, was honored nearby with a bronze equestrian statue in 1911, nearly five decades after the Civil War ended. When the memorial group could raise only half the statue’s $15,000 cost, state officials used taxpayer money for the other half.

In both cases, black citizens were not asked their opinions. These statues were all about showing them who was still boss.

The Morgan and Breckinridge statues were among dozens erected around the South during Jim Crow era. The goal was to recast the image of a rebellion to destroy the Union and preserve slavery as a noble “lost cause” of Southern culture and pride.

Those monuments endured for more than a century, but they have begun coming down across the South because they can no longer be explained away as benign artifacts. Modern white supremacists, who have friends in high places, rally around them as hateful symbols of “heritage.” A deadly protest over removal of a Confederate statue in Charlottesville, Va., spurred Mayor Jim Gray and the Urban County Council to action.

Black Lives Matter has raised awareness of these statues and race issues in general. Other groups have taken up the cause of pushing back against white racists and white supremacy enablers as a result. And this should be considered a victory because these statues were put up right after the civil war, the message to black people being "you're still nothing and we, the white people, are still in charge"

Southern whites made good on that threat and northern whites followed suit in many ways.

In Tecate, Mexico, a little boy with dark hair and curious eyes peers carefully over the barrier wall that borders San Diego County. Rising up almost 70 feet, his hands seemingly grip the barrier tightly, as if he were holding onto his mother’s body.

The French artist JR pasted that plaintive image on Wednesday, his first installation in Mexico. The piece, based on his photo of a 1-year-old who lives with his mother and grandparents in Tecate, is fully viewable only from the American side of the divide.

The idea came to JR in a dream. “Some people dream about fantasy worlds, I dream about walls,” he said in a phone interview. And though his artwork was not intended as a direct response to the Trump administration, it has extra resonance this week as the White House moved to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, the Obama-era program that shields young undocumented immigrants from deportation.

ROBERT E LEE IV FORCED TO LEAVE CHURCH AFTER TAKING A PUBLIC STAND ON BLACK LIVES MATTER

"My name is Robert Lee IV; I am a descendant of Robert E. Lee, the Civil War general whose statue was at the center of violence in Charlottesville. We have made my ancestor an idol of white supremacy, racism and hate. As a pastor it is my moral duty to speak out against racism, America's original sin. Today, I call on all of us with privilege and power to answer God's call to confront racism and white supremacy head-on. We can find inspiration in the Black Lives Matter movement, the women who marched in the Women's March in January and especially Heather Heyer who died fighting for her beliefs in Charlottesville."

When his church wanted to vote on his tenure after his MTV appearance, he resigned instead.

It was my deep honor to introduce and stand side-by-side Susan Bro whose daughter Heather died tragically in Charlottesville.  

My presence at the church as a descendent of Robert E. Lee and an outspoken opponent of White Supremacy had already attracted attention, but with my appearance on MTV the media’s focus on my church reached an all time high. A faction of church members were concerned about my speech and that I lifted up Black Lives Matter movement, the Women’ s March, and Heather Heyer as examples of racial justice work.

I want to stress that there were many in the congregation who supported my right to free speech, yet were uncomfortable with the attention the church was receiving... 

The church’s reaction was deeply hurtful to me.

I want it to be clear that I feel a deep love for this congregation, and gratitude that they were willing to hire me as my first church out of seminary. I believe with all my heart that God did good work in my life there. That being said, when the church wanted to vote on my tenure, I tendered my resignation in which I told the congregation:

“I regret that speaking out has caused concern and pain to my church. For this is I offer my heartfelt apology. I understand that my views could be considered to be controversial. I never sought this sort of attention. But, I do believe in God’s role in calling out for positive social change for the good of all.

We are all called by God to speak out against hate and evil in all its many forms. There are so many good things going on with this congregation and I do not want my fight to detract from the mission. If the recent media attention causes concern with my church, I reluctantly offer my resignation.”

And I stand by how he handled this too. This, and more. is what it's going to take for white people to start dismantling white supremacy in their homes, churches, neighborhoods and workplaces. Christians SHOULD be out front. We should expect no less

It's the easiest thing in the world to turn your head the other way, as a friend reminded me the other day. But Lee made turning away almost impossible which is likely why some of his congregation, or somewhere near 81% of them, wanted to vote on revoking his tenure.
The White Church's response to Black Lives Matter issues across this country is hurtful to a lot of people.

A bill that had passed North Carolina's State House of Representatives but hadn't made it the State Senate froze  after Heather Heyer, who is white, died in Charlottesville

 Drivers would be protected if they exercise “due care” in navigating the street – but still hit protestors.

Chambers, who is described by the news station as a lifelong political activist, said that the sign and policy are a political statement for the multiuse space, which, along with being a gym, serves as a community gathering spot and meeting place for activists in the metro area.

 

He added that the groups who work out at his gym are generally minorities who are uncomfortable with the presence of law-enforcement officer.

“It was really just that the vulgarity in that sign, and that seems to bring it out for people,” Chambers told the news site. That being said, Chambers has removed the sign ... for now, although he intends to put it back up without the curse word.

HOW SOCIAL NETWORK "NEXTDOOR" REDUCED RACIST POSTS BY 75%

In March of last year, Fusion published an article detailing the ways in which Nextdoor, a social network for neighbors, had become a home for racial profiling. In the “Crime and Safety” forum of many Nextdoor communities, users were reporting people as “suspicious” seemingly based primarily on the color of their skin.

Nextdoor CEO Nirav Tolia told me this week that he was “floored by that article,” having not realized before he read it that the network he co-founded to foster more close-knit communities had a racism problem.

“I’m a person of color so it really cut deep,” Tolia said. “We hated the idea that something we built would be viewed as racist…I hadn’t seen it in my own neighborhood’s Nextdoor and so didn’t realize it was an issue for us. Once I got past that, I was powered by the challenge to do something about it.”

In October, a German prosecutor launched an investigation into three Facebook managers for allegedly “ignoring racist posts.”

In November, Germany launched yet another, similar investigation...into European head of Facebook Martin Ott, Facebook’s managing director for northern, central and eastern Europe...The prosecution said last month that Ott may be held responsible for his employer’s failure to remove hate speech...

Twitter, for its part, gave up a separate fight to protect racist users in July, agreeing to unmask posters of racist content on its French service when ordered by a Paris court to hand it over.

Maas told reporters on Tuesday that the deal with the [these] companies will ensure that the companies adhere to German law when policing hate speech, rather than their own internal policies.

What happened at the University of Missouri is huge. Even if you do not see it hyped on mainstream news outlets, you make sure YOU hype it up. You repeat this. You make this story huge.


We have the power. We just have to use it.



So you make sure University Presidents, Mangers, and CEOs all over the country know. Let them know that they can be removed or lose much revenue, and just not because they or their staff acted in violence based on race. Make sure they know they can be removed because they failed to act, because they failed to protect people of color.

Ex-President Timothy Wolfe has to be sitting at home shell shocked right now. He's gotta be as shocked as Hillary was when Barack Obama got the democratic nomination instead of her.

I'm thinking that what happened today, not that far from Ferguson, is the result of momentum. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's as big as Jo Ann Robinson's Montgomery Bus Boycott. But it IS big.

I wonder why this is happening now. But then again, I don't wonder why. So many unrelated things have come together to create **the now** we find ourselves in.

In 2007, subprime lending got shakey and other countries stopped buying our bank products. When our banks started to collapse, economies all over the world started heading for recession and depression because our economies are so intertwined now.

Things got so bad here in the U.S., foreclosures left and right, that some white people were willing to elect the best person for the job even if he was black (Okay--maybe only 1/3 or white people but that was enough to put Barack Obama over the top)

Having a black president for two terms has made race a much larger part of the national conversation. The Tea Party's growth and its overt racism is a response to having a black man be the most powerful man in the world.

However, the Tea Party has been less of a problem than I thought they'd be. The collective IQ is so low all they've been doing is screwing up the republican party's ability to use dog whistle racism to unite the party and run everyone else down as usual (Trust me, the republicans were united and scary a decade or so back. They'd have been able to make Trump go sit down a long time ago.)

 Black Lives Matter, born out of the frustration over The Trayvon Martin Verdict, has been pushing back by putting a huge spot light on white police officers who have walked away from murder again and again and again.

Even though anti-black racism hasn't actually increased as much as white people seem to think it has, all this in-your-face violent racism in the mainstream news all the time is having an effect on

1) what we, as black people, are willing to take while ONLY grumbling among ourselves

2) what the very white main stream media is reporting as news because they don't have the control they used to. 

Social media has control of what's news to a large extent. And  luckily we, as black people, have some significant control over social media. 

Black Twitter Detective Agency has tracked down and gotten more than one person fired over racist statements and actions.  Black Lives Matter protests "go viral" because we pass information about protests around social media until a local protest is known about from coast to coast.
And whatever we make "go viral" is big money to news outlets. To me, this means that the white, mainstream news outlets are not the gatekeepers they once were. 

I don't think we'd have heard about this protest at all if it hadn't been for black folk on social media. And this protest being so successful, so powerful, in such a short amount of time ought to be awe inspiring to you.

And now that it has hit the mainstream news, just think about other white University Presidents, middle managers of this corporation or that corporation who just poo-poo an act of barbarous racism, pass it off as an aberration, and make no effort to investigate, no matter how many acts of racism there are in a row. Some of them must be wondering about what they're going to do now that muttering, "Tsk-tsk, that shouldn't have happened to you" isn't going to cut it anymore.

We've moving.

We're not moving fast. But black progress is never smooth or fast. It's more like a car moving on bad gas. The car seems like it's gonna sputter and die, but it keeps chugging along until there is this sudden, little surge forward.

I think kicking Tim Wolfe's ass to the curb was one of those surges forward, a rather big one.

WHITE SUPREMACY PUSHES BACK AT UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI

Black Students at The University Of Missouri aren't feeling too safe tonight.

Rumor has it that some black students are evacuating due to death threats. Apparently, there are white students chanting "White Power." There's at least one report of a white student throwing a brick. Most of the reports are coming from social media, Twitter in particular.

Main stream media doesn't appear to have picked up this latest white on black crime story yet. 


The push back from a few or many gutless cowards running around in trucks, shouting things from the safety of a moving vehicle doesn't surprise me, given how fast Wolfe was removed as President of The University of Missouri. We'll have to wait and see what kind of  numbers white racists are able to draw out onto the streets. So keep the black students and their allies in your prayers.

But the thing that did surprise me is that there is a place called "Greek Town" near campus that the black students were afraid to be in after dark BEFORE the blow up over the last few days.

Somebody remind me what decade we're living in?


And where's The Main Stream Media?

A few years ago, three black people in counterfeit Black Panther garb, just standing around looking fierce, doing nothing in particular made the news. With white on black ACTUAL crime the predominantly white press is a little more reluctant, I see.

You know what I'm thinking?

The counter-revolution is not going to be televised either, not unless you and I make what's happening at the University of Missouri "go viral" on social media.

A BUTLER, A FOOTBALL TEAM, AND UNIVERSITY FACULTY CATCH A WOLFE OFF GUARD

I've been waiting years and years for some ball team somewhere to yank some dollars out from under a team owner. Years, I've been waiting. There are so many black players on some of these individual basketball and football teams that I knew that they had the ability to make huge rivers of money dry up or flow in reverse, uphill if they'd just unite.

 Today, I pretty much got my wish. It wasn't a professional team like I've always dreamed. Instead it was a college team that stood up.

Young men that are two minutes away from being boys, young men that want to get picked up by a professional team stood firm against racism . They stood up despite knowing that most of the owners of the professional teams that they want to play on are white. Afraid or not, they stood up and got behind a black man named Jonathan Butler who went on a hunger strike to protest racism that had been ignored and/or condoned, again and again.

Then the faculty got behind Butler and the football players too and suddenly it was over. They won. 


In case you missed it because it happened so fast.

The last act of white supremacy that Jonathan Butler decided he was going to grumble about without taking action was a swastika drawn in the residence hall using human feces.

On Saturday, November 7, 2015, the University Of Missouri Football Team joined the protest.

 "[A]s America gathered to watch the racist Donald Trump get free airtime on NBC, roughly 30 black Mizzou football players, some with their arms interlocked, sent out the following message: “The athletes of color on the University of Missouri football team truly believe ‘injustice Anywhere is a threat to Justice Everywhere’ We will no longer participate in any football related activities until President Tim Wolfe resigns or is removed due to his negligence toward marginalized students’ experiences. WE ARE UNITED!!!!!”

By Monday, Jonathan Butler's protest had gathered enough force to topple a University President. On November 9, 2015, President Timothy Wolfe was forced to resign.

Chancellor R. Bowen was forced to resign as well.

What happened at the University of Missouri is huge. Even if you do not see it hyped on mainstream news outlets the way it should be, you make sure YOU hype it up. You repeat this. You make this story huge.

We have the power. We just have to use it. Put other universities and corporations on notice. We can unite and take you down if you FAIL TO ACT when you should.
