In 2011, Speaker Paul Ryan released a three-minute video that was supposed to define the core purpose of the Republican Party during the Obama era. Watch it today, and you can barely believe the chutzpah of this man.

With ominous orchestral music in the background, Ryan stares into the camera and warns of economic cataclysm.

"We face a crushing burden of debt, which will take down our economy, will lower our living standards," he said. "The economists tell us when your debt gets to 90 percent, as a share of your economy, you start slowing down and we stagnate."

Remember those days? It turns out that Ryan's pitch back then was just a trick, a political stunt that he abandoned as soon as the winds shifted.

Earlier this week, the Congressional Budget Office warned that the tax bill Ryan rushed through the House in December will explode the annual deficits, causing the debt to balloon by more than 50 percent over the next decade. That will push the total well past the 90 percent threshold that Ryan warned was a red line.

So, what happened, Mr. Ryan? The deficits matter when [a black man is president] but not when Republicans are [in power?]

And please, don't blame this one on Donald Trump. This was the work of the Republican establishment, with Ryan steering it. He rushed this tax bill through the House without needed hearings, and before the CBO had a chance to even predict the impact on the deficit....
