7-Year-Old Migrant Girl Taken Into Border Patrol Custody Dies Of Dehydration, Exhaustion

     A 7-year-old girl from Guatemala died of dehydration and shock after she was taken into Border Patrol custody last week for crossing from Mexico into the United States illegally with her father and a large group of migrants along a remote span of New Mexico desert, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Thursday.
     The child’s death is likely to intensify scrutiny of detention conditions at Border Patrol stations and CBP facilities that are increasingly overwhelmed by large numbers of families seeking asylum in the United States.
     According to CBP records, the girl and her father were taken into custody about 10 p.m. Dec. 6 south of Lordsburg, N.M., as part of a group of 163 people who approached U.S. agents to turn themselves in.
    More than eight hours later, the child began having seizures at 6:25 a.m., CBP records show. Emergency responders, who arrived soon after, measured her body temperature at 105.7 degrees, and according to a statement from CBP, she “reportedly had not eaten or consumed water for several days.”

...The ACLU blamed “lack of accountability, and a culture of cruelty within CBP” for the girl’s death. “The fact that it took a week for this to come to light shows the need for transparency for CBP. We call for a rigorous investigation into how this tragedy happened and serious reforms to prevent future deaths,” Cynthia Pompa, advocacy manager for the ACLU Border Rights Center, said in a statement.

A caravan of an estimated 7,000 migrants, including many families and women with children, originated in Central America and is making its way through Mexico towards the United States. Today, President Donald Trump announced via Twitter that he will start cutting, or substantially reducing, aid to Central America. According to research and advocacy group the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), this would be acounterproductive reaction that would undermine efforts to address the root causes of migration, namely, violence, corruption, poverty, and lack of economic opportunity.  

1. Why are people leaving? And why are they leaving now?

Severe insecurity: Honduras and El Salvador are among the deadliest places in the world that aren’t war zones—Small Arms Survey ranked the two countries in the top 5 most violent in the world, alongside Venezuela, Syria, and Afghanistan. Guatemala was 17th, ahead of Colombia and Mexico. Repressive policing and in some cases outright abuse by government security forces has done little to turn the tide. 

Droughts, floods, and other [climate change] phenomena

Lack of economic opportunity [for men leads to...] 

Intolerable situations of domestic violence [for women]

2. Can Trump cut aid to Central America?

 3. Why are people traveling as a caravan?

Coyotes are expensive criminals and travel with them leads to as many beatings, murders, and rapes as the criminals back home they're running from. The Caravan provides safety in numbers. 

 4. What happened to the migrant caravan that attracted so much vitriol from President Trump earlier this year?

Hundreds were allowed to petition for asylum. 

What happened to those that weren't is unknown. 

What we probably do know is that all the publicity caused by Pontificating Pumpkinhead Pretend Prez probably led to this new one being so large.  I have to wonder how many smaller caravans came to U.S. --without any publicity at all-- over years and decades before Trump's big mouth made knowledge of their existence widely known. 

 And now he wants to cut aid to countries, making them even less attractive to stay in.  

What a dumb ass.

We absolutely cannot have open borders. We absolutely cannot have somebody this dumb in charge while we're figuring out what to do. But here we are anyway.

Ex-Acting Director of ICE John Sandweg Says Some Parents Will Never See Their Children Again

The former head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement told NBC News that migrant parents separated from their children at the border are sometimes unable to relocate their child and remain permanently separated. 

"Permanent separation. It happens," said John Sandweg, who served as acting director of ICE under the Obama administration from 2013-2014. 

Sandweg's warning contradicts White House messaging that the separation of women and children migrants under the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy is only temporary... 

Sandweg says he has seen permanent separation happen when a parent is deported without his or her child.

If he knew this before they started, then the current head of ICE knew it too. And if he know it, the White House was informed.

As evil as I know Trump and his thugs are, I really never imagined they'd risk permanent separation of children from parents...like it's 1818 instead of 2018.

The Trump administration has shown that it's willing — eager, actually — to go to great lengths to limit illegal immigration into the United States, from building a multi-billion-dollar border wall with Mexico to escalated roundups that grab those living here without permission even if they have no criminal record and are longtime, productive members of their communities. Now the administration's cold-hearted approach to enforcement has crossed the line into abject inhumanity: the forced separation of children from parents as they fight for legal permission to remain in the country.

How widespread is the practice? That's unclear. The Department of Homeland Security declined comment because it is being sued over the practice. 

It ignored a request for statistics on how many children it has separated from their parents, an unsurprising lack of transparency from an administration that faces an unprecedented number of lawsuits over its failure to respond to Freedom of Information Act requests for government — read: public — records. But immigrant rights activists say they have noticed a jump, and in December, a coalition of groups filed a complaint with Homeland Security over the practice...
