DR. Dre Forgot Michel'le In STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON But Michel'le Didn't Forget DR. Dre In SURVIVING COMPTON

repost
from 2016
“Everybody keeps asking me, ‘Girl, why you ain’t in they movie? [STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON] You was there. You was down with Ruthless Records right along with them boys,’”
Michel’le Toussaint's intro in her Lifetime Movie
on her time associated with the members of N.W.A,

"Surviving Compton:

Dre, Suge and Michel’le"

Feeling Rebloggy
"Once Michel’le formally introduces the film, it gets real immediately, going all the way back to when she was a little girl growing up in a neighborhood where police brutality and the physical assault of women surrounded her.

Police brutality and brutality against women are purposely linked. By doing so, it is clear that Michel’le’s story isn’t unique but instead a cycle. When she, as a little girl, proclaims that no man will ever put his hands on her when she grows up, her grandmother, whom she calls Meme (played quite ably by Donna Biscoe), essentially tells her that black men hitting black women is just how things are. As lofty as it may seem, Surviving Compton aims to raise awareness of that cycle without ever sacrificing the core story...."

Once again, I love how the NFL, men, and too many women pretended they didn't know Ray hit Janay until the 2nd video came out.

I love how people pretended they didn't know Trump hadn't actually tried to grab women by the p*ssy long before that 2005 video resurfaced. Trump has announced exactly what he is on many a television and radio show.

And now people are pretending not to know Dr. Dre beat that women when he's said he did it.  The reason a male public figure like him gives a public half-ass apology to a woman he's beaten is because he was trapped into doing so. The thing that made Dr. Dre's I-was-young-then apology even more worthless --beyond the misgynor lyrics he and Ice Cube defended when the misgynoir reflected in their lyrics--
 was the fact that he erased Michel'le from that movie Straight Outta Compton

But Michel'le didn't forget Dr. Dre in her movie Surviving Compton. And Dr. Dre tried to stop the movie from airing and for "good reason" apparently. When the movie showed Dr. Dre beating Michel'le in the movie, apparently this violence became more real because people started tearing Dr. Dre apart on Twitter.

As I've said before, the best thing about #OscarsSoWhite Part II was that "Straight Outta Compton" didn't win a thing. Every once in a while white supremacy tosses black women a silver-lining.

“I’ve been talking about my abuse for many, many years, but it has not gotten any ears until now,” Michel’le told the Times. Well Lifetime must have been listening and turned the spotlight all the way up on her, and we may all be the better for it. Surviving Compton, directed by Janice Cooke, a veteran TV director and producer and written by Dianne Houston, a Howard alum who comes from theatre, is much more entertaining and deeper than most would expect. It has real gravitas. Michel’le narrates the film and even pops into its narrative from time to time, giving it an air of both herstory and a cautionary tale..."

ON THE ACCURACY OF THE MOVIE
"The question many viewers will have after their viewing: is the film accurate?
I would say, for the most part, yes. I extensively interviewed Michel’le and other survivors of Dre’s alleged abuse for my new book Original Gangstas: the Untold Story of Dr Dre, Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Tupac Shakur, and the Birth of West Coast Rap, and investigated their claims.

The film largely echoes Michel’le’s accounts to me, though she never went to police with her allegations – unlike other women including television host Dee Barnes and Lisa Johnson, the mother of three of Dre’s children who alleged he beat her many times, including while she was pregnant. (Dre pled no contest to beating Barnes, and received probation, while Johnson was granted a restraining order against him. A Ruthless rapper named Tairrie B also maintains that Dre beat her.)"

TAP DANCING ON SOMEONE'S GRAVE AS A LANGUAGE OF THE UNHEARD: THE DEATH OF XXXTENTACION

Raised up in the church, I was taught that it is an evil thing to wish someone ill -- even your enemies. All this life lesson really did was teach me to be dishonest about my true feelings. My mother was and still is a person who only reads the easy, peaceful sections of the bible so she doesn't have to do anything to stop anybody who is treating her or her own children badly.

It wasn't until I was older and read the bible all the way through --unlike my mother at the time-- that I understood that David, "a man after God's own heart" was always honest and gave full vent to his feelings -- even the negative ones.
O that Thou wouldst slay the wicked, O God; depart from me, therefore, men of bloodshed. For they speak against Thee wickedly, and Thine enemies take Thy name in vain. Do I not hate those who hate Thee, O Lord? And do I not loathe those who rise up against Thee? I hate them with the utmost hatred; they have become my enemies (Ps. 139:19-22).

Not everything the "good characters" in the bible do is good.
Abraham told lies to help God's prophecy come true and nearly wound up having his wife raped.  Joseph bragged about being a King one day over his brothers and in jealousy they threw him under the bus. And King David prayed for some truly, unspeakably horrible things to be done to his enemies. However, praying and wishing don't make a thing so -- thankfully.
But I've been thinking, for a long time now, that it was David's complete honesty about his feelings (even the ugliest ones) combined with his certainty that God would make things right if he laid problems at God's feet that made David "a man after God's own heart" -- even though David would eventually become a murderer to take another man's wife.
Even so, when I heard reports that Justice Anton Scalia had died, I immediately squashed the surge of joy that flowed through me. This squashing lasted all of 30 minutes. It just couldn't last in the face of friends whooping it up on the phone and others telling me they were literally dancing upon hearing of this powerful misogynistic, homophobic, racist's death.
Justice Antonin “Nino” Scalia was racist, charismatic, misogynist, intelligent, homoantagonistic, witty, a good friend and a judicial terrorist.
He was all these things, multifaceted in the ways that all human beings are, and he should be remembered as such. Still, in the days since his death, the communities he attacked viciously with his decisions over the course of his 30 years on the Supreme Court have been taken to task for dancing on his grave.

My childhood training fell away as I listened to my friends and my true feelings came out. I celebrated too. And it felt good. It was cathartic and honest and I have no regrets.
While I still don't think it is a good thing to wish or pray someone dead, I fully plan on celebrating if George Zimmerman, Darren Wilson, or Dante Servin die in a hail of gun fire, especially if that gunfire winds up coming from black police officers for being sassy and talking back or not moving quick enough when told.

And I'll be doing more than a little tap dance if some abused black girl grows into a woman and finally takes out a favorite black male pedophile singer too.

The only reason I was anywhere near indifferent to the death of 20 year old XXXTentacion is because I barely knew who he was before he was killed.

The first time I heard his name was when a music service, Spotify, was claimed they would be dropping him from their service due to his violence against women. Spotify didn't as a successful push-back against the #MeToo movement let Spotify know that there was more money to be lost than gained by getting rid of artists like XXXTentacion and R. Kelly.

But I know who XXXTentacion is now. Do you?
Pitchfork has obtained a 142-page transcript of testimony by XXXTentacion’s reported victim, delivered over two and a half hours in January at a public defender’s office in Miami. (XXXTentacion’s lawyer, his manager, and spokespeople for his label, Empire, have not responded to requests for comment.)
In the deposition, the woman said she suffered a grim pattern of routine abuse and offered harrowing details about what she said happened in the final days before the charges....
The first incident of domestic violence occurred about two weeks (after she moved in with him). He slapped her and broke her iPhone 6S, because she had complimented a male friend on his new jewelry. (XXXTentacion later repaired the phone.)
Later that day, XXXTentacion left the room and returned with two grilling implements—a “barbecue pitchfork” and a “barbecue cleaner,” she said—and told her to pick between them, because he was going to put one of them in her vagina...He was lightly dragging the tool against her inner thigh when she passed out. He did not penetrate her with it...
...he was asking me why I was singing his friend’s part of the song, if I like him, why do I like him, like do I ever look at his Twitter,” she said. Then, XXXTentacion head-butted her, punched her, stomped on her, and put her in the bathtub, where he continued hitting and kicking her. “He also wanted to cut out my tongue because I was singing the song..."  [She ran. He beat her and stomped her. He would eventually be charged with a violent robbery, go to jail, get out and continue the abuse.]
In early October 2016, she found out that she was pregnant by XXXTentacion. The pregnancy was planned by both of them...When XXXTentacion returned inside, he told her, “You need to tell me the truth right now or I’ll kill you and this jit.” She said that “jit” was slang for the unborn child. He then started elbowing, head-butting, and punching her. He strangled her until she almost passed out. He took her to the bathroom and demanded one last time that she tell him everything or he would kill her in the bathtub.  [She went blind in one eye, temporarily]

Now that I know who XXXTentacion is, I am indifferent no longer. He was a black male slave master to a (black?) female* slave.  He's dead. And a bunch of women he might have met in the future have escaped him, never having had the misfortune to meet him.

Some people have defended XXX,  saying the woman he beat took some of this testimony back, that she claimed she was lying.
Well, I'm sure she was lying at some point. Domestic violence victims who have been beaten like this often lie in order to minimize the abuse and beating NOT to make it worse than it was. This is likely why I read, in at least one article, that there was at least a proposal to charge him with witness tampering.
Even if  the woman he beat turns out to be some magical anomaly and only 50% of her testimony turned out to be true, this man was as dangerous a white man who used to skin kittens for fun as a 5 year old child -- a serial killer in the making.
While XXX might have turned out to be a routine chronic serial abuser of women, I really do wonder how his recent past compares to another serial killer of black women that the black community didn't care about for two decades or more - THE GRIM SLEEPER

TALES OF THE GRIM SLEEPER PART 2: ACCESSORIES BEFORE THE FACT

http://blackchickrocked.blogspot.com/2017/08/tales-of-grim-sleeper-part-2.html

Some black men (and the Pick-Me-s that will follow them over a cliff) have claimed to be outraged by black female indifference and/or joy over news of this man's death. One of the famous ones claimed to be outraged because he claimed Malcom X would have died the same kind of lowlife if he hadn't lived past 20 years of age.

There are so many things wrong with this statement I can't even go through them all. But understand this before we proceed: Black men love to tell a cleaned-up, fake history of black history --leaving women out -- same as white men do.

First of all, Malcolm did not recover his life from the same kind of depths that XXX did. Secondly, Malcolm X did not recover his own life.  Malcolm did not create or save himself. by himself.(The self-made man story is a lie the vast majority of the time when you hear it. And on a side note: Martin Luther King was created and built-up by black women from the ground up.) Malcolm was rescued by other black men who gave him things to think about and read.

And if Jidenna and Kendrick Lamar had done the same, for XXXTentacion, maybe he would be alive right now.  Furthermore, if they had cared about XXXTentacion and his potential future female victims while he was still alive the rest of us might recognize their "grief" as little more than a performance piece.
~~~~~
Just like that Orange Orangutan sitting in the White Supremacist House in Washington D.C.,  XXXTentacion really shouldn't matter to anyone, one way or the other, without his followers. That is, Chump wouldn't be in the White House without his white supremacist voters. And XXXTentacion's star wouldn't have been on the rise if not for his male supremacist fan base.
His nearly being removed from Spotify enhanced his career in much the same way Apricot Asshole's political career was enhanced by calling Mexicans "rapists."
Not surprising:
Male Supremacists
and
White Supremacists
are cut from the same clothe
Over the last few days, the defense of XXXTentacion and demands that black women see his death as tragic, rather than as a relief, have taken on the same tone as the defense of Bill Cosby, Nate Parker, Chris Brown, Kodak Black, Ray Rice, R. Kelly...
There are demands for forgiveness from black women for abusive black men who have made it clear --with maybe one exception -- that they don't want forgiveness. Toxic Masculinity soaked macho men never ask for forgiveness.
And patriarchy soaked non-feminist black women, as usual, have run out in front of these men to shield them with their own bodies saying "We don't know what happened. We weren't there."
For whatever reason, the message that I've gotten a lot more clearly this time is this:
'Black men are suffering from white supremacy so they should be given understanding when they go through a phase of beating and attempting to kill black women. He's young. It's just a phase. She forgave him. Why can't you? Some black women are generous enough to be beaten half to death and get over it. If not for these ride-or-die black women who are forgiving after being beaten and nearly killed, the black community would collapse.'
Make no mistake, what's being described is NOT FORGIVENESS and THIS IS the message black women are being given with these demands that we see this young man as anything but a variation on the slave master and a potential murder.
So now that this message has been received, I'm actually wondering if tap dancing on someone's grave as catharsis is enough for black women?
If 10% of black males are willing to raise up to protect their own demographic (black males) against the accusations of beaten and bleeding black women while another 80% of these jokers sit silently "not wanting to be judgmental" (same as white men want to be neutral about Anton Scalia, Donald Chump and this Chumpanzees)  then what is left for black women but to hope that violent misogynists die young before they can maim or kill more black women?
If black men with money have their way, the XXX's and R. Kelly's will never go to prison -- not for beating a black woman even if she winds up almost dead. So what is left but to hope they cease to exist?
With very few exceptions, black men have made it very clear --mostly through their silence-- that they are not going to protect black women at the expense of any black man, no matter how despicable that black man is. This is a large part of why R Kelly still has a career.
The only thing holding me back from praying for the deaths of men like R. Kelly is the same thing that hold me back from praying for the death of people like Darren Wilson and George Zimmerman. It's an evil thing to do to pray for someones death but I still recognize them all as the enemies of blackness
...because black women are just as black as black men are, quiet as it's kept.
Some black men and their Pick-Me-s have claimed that
Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy  (XXXTentacion's real name) was in the process of getting his life together.
That means as much to me as hearing that the white slave master who put these scars on Gordon's back showed up at a charity event for a black school 1867 -- without ever having saying he was "sorry" one time.  And when the black men of 2018 value black women as much as they value themselves, they'll feel the same way.
Do not hear me saying, "He got what he deserved." I'm not saying that because I have taken the log out of my own eye. I have done more screwed up sh** than I care to admit. I AM saying I'm not going to cry over something bad happening to my enemy. And I'm not even going to seriously discuss "forgiving" someone I know I would have put in the ground the first time he laid hands on me in viciousness. And there are heroic black women in prison right now who felt the same way -- they killed their abusers and rightfully so.
Estimates range between 40-80% of women convicted of murder acted in self-defense against their abusers. Male aggression is evident in almost all homicides, even when women are the ultimate offenders. Unlike men, most women who kill do not have criminal histories. Women serving time for Murder I or II or Voluntary Manslaughter comprise about 10-15% of women in prison.
One-third of murdered women are killed by male partners; only 4% of men are murdered by female partners.
https://solidarity-us.org/atc/130/p729/
It seems to me that the only time
much of the black community
thinks trying to destroy the person
that is trying to destroy you
is a bad idea is when
a black woman or a black child
is on the receiving end of the initial attack.
For those of you that think this way, let me have my King David moment and say, "Screw you and the horse you rode in on."
Change your mind and your heart and grab-a-hold of any young black man you want to save -- before he is routinely beating, raping, or  abusing a black woman.  Failing that, the very freaking least that most black men can do is take their Pick-Me-s and support a protest that removes men like XXXTentacion and R. Kelly's music from Spotify.
If we can't change the minds of black male abusers of black women (all women) the least we can do is destroy their careers.
And I wish that was the road we as black people, male and female together, had chosen.  If so, maybe that arrogant little b***** would have been humbled sooner, been removed from the public eye sooner, maybe not worth killing, and maybe still alive right now.
But that's not the way things played out.
In any case, just like white supremacy is on white people to cure, male supremacy is on men to cure and that goes double in the black community.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To Black Christian Feminists who think what I've said is a bit much, I'll add this: Inside your own mind, treat XXXTentacion the same way you do George Zimmerman, Dante Servin, Darren Wilson, and Michael Brelo etc. For me this might mean, I try not to think of them at all BUT when I do, I pray that God will "get them" in due time in any way He sees fit.
*- Black men in entertainment have a rather severe colorism problem. While some will not marry a white women they often look for someone as pale as possible to date/mate. I don't know if his girlfriend is the usual mixed-race-looking black woman or some other exotic-not-quite-white woman. And I don't care because it doesn't matter.
Misogynistic black men who beat and/or rape and/or murder women (of any color) have got to go because they are deadly to the black community as a whole.
AS THE MEDIA TURNS ON KELLY, THE FAR RIGHT FALLS IN LOVE
Feeling Rebloggy
In a telling twist, the vast right-wing-media universe was mostly silent this week as mainstream news organizations—CNN, NBC, ABC—devoted wall-to-wall coverage to news that John Kelly had sought to protect Staff Secretary Rob Porter from allegations that he had violently assaulted both of his ex-wives. Kelly, as my colleague Gabriel Sherman reported, had known of the claims against his right-hand man in the West Wing for months.
He only walked back his defense of Porter, and issued a clumsy statement saying that he had taken
He only walked back his defense of Porter, and issued a clumsy statement saying that he had taken “immediate and direct action” after compounding news reports turned the cover-up into a national scandal. (Porter has denied all allegations.)
As Porter’s ex-wives came forward with
 horrifically detailed allegations about their own ordeals; Porter’s former girlfriend said she had suffered similar abuse; and Hope Hicks, who Porter is currently dating, was drawn into the line of fire, speculation abounded as to whether the fiasco would mean Kelly’s resignation, or at least his diminution within the White House, where Donald Trump
 was said to be furious over the affair.
ANOTHER WHITE HOUSE AIDE DAVID SORENSEN RESIGNS OVER DOMESTIC ABUSE ALLEGATIONS
Feeling Rebloggy
A second White House staffer resigned in the wake of allegations of physical and emotional abuse toward an ex-wife on Friday.
Speechwriter David Sorensen suddenly resigned after his ex-wife aired accusations of domestic violence during their two-and-a-half year marriage.
Earlier this week, White House staff secretary Rob Porter resigned under similar circumstances.
The Washington Post was first to report Sorensen’s resignation.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, THE LIVES OF FEMALE BLACK FOLK, AND JONATHAN MARTINEZ
Cedric Anderson killed his estranged teacher wife, Karen Smith, and one of her students, 8 year old Jonathan Martinez, while she was in her classroom in San Bernadino, California.
Cedric Anderson and his estranged wife Karen Smith
Police said the shooter told school staff he was going to the classroom to visit the teacher who was killed. He was recognized by the staff member in the office and was not accompanied to the classroom.
“He simply said he was there to drop something off there with his wife,” Burguan said.
http://heavy.com/news/2017/04/cedric-charles-anderson-karen-smith-north-park-san-bernardino-school-shooting-shooter-suspect-gunman-husband-wife-teacher-murder-suicide-photos/
The way the school handled this is a problem. The staff should have been the front line against this intrusion. Of course nobody should be dead. But Jonathan Martinez should never have laid eyes on Karen's Smith's husband in the classroom. Cedric Anderson shouldn't have made it past the front office.
When I was in first grade, I knew everybody was born and had parents. But somehow my classmates and I were shocked to find out our teacher had a life outside the classroom and a husband too. It was like we thought somebody poured batter into a human shaped mold marked "teacher," baked her, popped her out of the oven then gave her instructions: "Go forth make little children learn."
From kindergarten to high school, I never saw any of my teachers' husbands or boyfriends. I think I heard a rumor once in Junior High that somebody saw a favorite teacher kissing her husband in the parking lot once.
Now that I think of it all these years later, it probably wasn't an accident we never saw anybody but teachers and staff in the classroom.
This was probably a security precaution.
Jonathan Martinez
8 years old when he died
 Even if it wasn't, it's probably a better idea that nobody but the teachers and students are allowed in the classroom unless something special and pre-approved is going on.
I am assuming that each public teacher in the nation has some sort of security check before her or she is hired. (That's a big assumption since our luggage wasn't even being screened before being put on an airplane prior to 9/11)
Still, let's assume there's some sort of a security check done on all public school teachers. Unless these same schools are also running security checks on husbands, fathers, and friends that might come to the school, nobody but the teacher and possibly parents of the children have any business anywhere near the classroom without some sort of screening being done.
If the world was different and we were living under some sort of paranoid dictatorship, and the husbands, wives, etc. of a potential teacher being considered for hire actually had to have background checks done in order for a teacher to be considered safe for children to be around, then that background check for Karen Smith would have revealed that the court documents mentioning Cedric Anderson show a clear pattern of domestic abuse.
  • In one of the court documents, a live-in girlfriend accused Anderson of trying to suffocate her with a pillow and threatening her with a butcher knife.The woman was able to obtain a restraining order against Anderson in 2013 and it expired last June.
  • In 1997, Anderson's wife at the time also got a protection order for herself and their three children, accusing Anderson of threatening to kidnap their children and kill her.
  • Anderson then met Smith in 2013. They had an ongoing relationship for four years before marrying in January. But the couple became estranged a few months into the marriage.Smith had been private about their marriage, telling only a few close family members about turmoil in the relationship, including Anderson accusing Smith of infidelity.
http://abc7.com/news/documents-show-abuse-allegations-against-san-bernardino-gunman/1866289/
The answer for the school is as I said above. Outside of an emergency, no adults go to the classroom without a damn good and pre-arranged reason. Even parents of children should be escorted if they want to observe the classroom because there's no telling what that one parent is capable of doing to other people's children. Furthermore, there should probably be some sort of policy about teachers (male and female) having to reveal any change of address immediately and/or changes of marital status.
The office staff should have some sort of warning that a boyfriend or husband they assumed the teacher trusted last week is potentially dangerous this week. That compromises the teacher's privacy, to be sure. But it is my experience that women dealing with domestic abuse DO NOT see domestic abuse AS domestic abuse until it's fairly late in the day.
The school aside though, what is the answer for women like Karen Smith?  How does a woman like Karen Smith protect herself?
Should women do a background check? In this patriarchy soaked country, most of non-feminist women and especially non-feminist men are conditioned to believe that women routinely lie about domestic violence and rape, that women routinely use these accusations to manipulate men when they are "out of control" and "angry" when women aren't the primary ones doing the beating and the killing when violence becomes part of an argument.
When women's right's activists, mostly feminists, pushed to have police arrest men like O J Simpson arrested, the white men that run local, state, and federal governments and police departments pushed back. During a domestic dispute, the police will arrest the man and the woman involved. The arrest of the OJ Simpson-stand-in and the Nicole-stand-in, both at the same time, has had the affect of making it appear that women have become more violent.
But the dead bodies don't lie.
Who is the perpetrator vs who is the victim is clear when there's a dead body
At Least A Third Of All Women Murdered In The U.S. Are Killed By Male Partners
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/10/09/men-killing-women-domesti_n_5927140.html
Men being left as a result of domestic violence don't behave like demons 24/7. I've always known that domestic abusers have their good days, good weeks, and good months between bouts of violence. And, because a friend of mine volunteered at a women's shelter, I knew that women left and went back to their abusers an average of 5 to 7 times before they left for good.
I also knew and still know, from personal experience, that women lie to themselves about the psychological and emotional damage being done to their children even when he "only hits me."
So, I knew "why doesn't she just leave?" was never an appropriate question.
Over the years, I've met women a number of women who have told me stories about leaving men that had beaten them. And, I've been close to intimate partner violence while it was happening too.
  1. A couple of decades ago, I told my ex-sister in-law to leave my brother. Even now, after the healing and forgiveness, I find it impossible to believe my brother was ever capable of killing her -- on purpose. But in my head? I know that anybody who will raise his fists to you in order to control you like you are his property, his slave, is capable of killing you.
  2.  An old friend of mine had her ex-husband chasing her around for about two years. Stalker-like, this white man even executed a slow car chase once -- while his child was in the car.  Living in an affluent area, this woman had options. Friends offered her guest houses to stay in when she was afraid to go home to her own apartment. Her eight year old daughter wound up telling her therapist that her worst nightmare was that her father would kill her mother and leave her stuck with him.
My brother was in the military when he was violent. That and being black would have put him under a jail if he'd gotten as crazy as my white friend's white husband. So he pulled himself together. But a white man like my friend's husband, by comparison, has the world by the ass. That's why her husband wasn't the least bit afraid of court orders, the police, or what might be reported to his employers. He wasn't "crazy" as some of our other friends said. He was just well informed as to his status in this country.
By the way, in case you haven't noticed, white women aren't worth two cents to the white community unless their husband or father says they are worth two cents.
  • Rape sentences aren't nearly what they should be most of the time. And Judges can decide that they are more worried about a male rapists future then the female rape victim.
  • Furthermore, just recently I found out that rich white girls aren't worth much either. A story just broke about an affluent boarding school in Connecticut called Choate Rosmary Hall which has been covering up sexual abuse of students, declining to call the police, for decades.
So my white friend's white husband was able chase her around, without much threat of repercussion, for close to two years  Do you know what finally stopped him from stalking his ex-wife? It wasn't the police, court, and threats to tell his employer. Her ex chose to stop pursuing her because he fell in love with a new woman
-- a new woman much like Karen Smith, right?
I had mixed feelings about this new woman back when this happened, but not very mixed. I was so overjoyed that this man was not threatening my friend and her daughter that I couldn't let myself think about the next woman at all.
But as I think of her now and as I think of Karen Smith, I can't help but think that we as women have to do two things to survive the patriarchy as it stands:
1) Trust but verify
  • Once we get to be 30 and 40 years old, and a man has a long history, maybe it's not the worst idea in the world to hire a private investigator if you have no way of ever seeing or talking to an ex-girlfriend or ex-wife. What he did or didn't do might not be recorded in court documents anywhere. But in Karen Smith's case, this information might (or might not) have saved her life.
(Some tips on hiring a private investigator from police in Arizona. http://licensing.azdps.gov/knowpi.asp )
2) Make our sisterhood stronger.
  • I don't think we have to be best friends with an ex. I am fairly firm believer that the ex should be completely removed from his life voluntarily before you even arrive in his life as a mark of maturity and as a mark of having common values (if he hasn't had children with her). But I observe that non-feminist women tend to see the last woman a man was with as competition she has bested.
  • When the feminist woman refuse to see the last woman in this way, a woman she's superior to/ a woman she's beaten out, that's when she can listen between the words a new man is saying about his ex. If he paints a picture where the ex is evil and he himself was all goodness and light, then maybe a strong minded woman should know that she should run....instead of coming to see herself as "the good woman that's going to save him."
It's very possible, even likely, that Karen Smith could have done these two things and every other thing recommended by domestic violence shelters and still wound up dead. That's because the thing that really needs to change in our society is not how women protect themselves. The thing that needs to be destroyed is the patriarchy that leads men to think they are the slave masters, overseers inside their own homes.
While I understand unemployment and other stress creating events more prevalent in the black community lead to black women being 35% more likely to suffer from domestic violence,  I also refuse to understand why white men's treatment of black men hasn't led them to a fuller understanding of sexism and patriarchy.
If you understand white supremacy, you can make a choice to understand male supremacy. To me, that's all it is: A choice.
