APRIL REIGN'S #OscarsSoWhite IS THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING BLACK WOMEN TO THE BIG SCREEN

I don't know if you've noticed, but there are a lot more black women on the big screen lately. Little black girls are getting to see themselves and the black women they'll grow into as smart, courageous, independent, loving, and beautiful.

And we probably have April Reign to thank for this...at least in part

"...April Reign was watching the Oscar nominations announcement on TV with her family. Struck by the lack of ethnic diversity among those whose names were called, Reign – a journalist in New York – took to Twitter to voice her disapproval. The hashtag she coined – #OscarsSoWhite – caught on immediately. The hashtag #OscarsSoWhite resurfaced again, a year later, when not one person of color was nominated. "

April Reign
On television, Shonda Rhimes and Mara Brock Akil have already broken glass ceilings and got the black girl magic ball rolling with GIRLFRIENDS, SCANDAL, HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER,  and BEING MARY JANE. It isn't long before Issa Rae, Michaela Coel, and Ava DuVernay produce INSECURE, CHEWING GUM, and QUEEN SUGAR and follow in their black female footsteps.
But it's APRIL REIGN who deserves some credit for what starts happening on the big screen
Spring ahead a year or so after the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag protest does its thing two years running and GIRLS TRIP out does the incredibly over-hyped DUNKIRK theater per theater at one point according to Box Office Mojo stats.
HIDDEN FIGURES was likely already on its way to getting made, and the racism in he movie was muted due to having a white male director. But the black female stars did get some recognition in the wake of  #OscarsSoWhite protests initiated by April Reign.
There is even a changing of the guard at Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It embarked "on an unprecedented, years-long push to fill its ranks with new members who are different than the older white men tasked with the bulk of Oscar voting in the past...."
http://www.vulture.com/2018/02/how-new-oscar-voters-are-changing-the-way-the-academy-thinks.html
The movie MOONLIGHT, a coming of age story for a gay black man, wins Best Picture at the academy awards -- the award ceremony a disaster because the white folks are so sure that white business as usual is going to continue, LA LA LAND is erroneously given the award at first.
BLACK PANTHER stops being a rumor and becomes a reality.
And Ava DuVernay is able to do the unheard of. She is able to make a big budget movie, a 100 million dollar film called A WRINKLE IN TIME, where a little black girl is the star .
Whenever you start to doubt if protest works, think of April Reign. Whenever the going gets really, really tough and you start to doubt #BLACKLIVESMATTER do not doubt that protest works even when it works slowly. A decade or so back, unarmed black people died at the hands of police and nobody but people on the block knew about it.
Now the whole world knows when certain black men die. Black women? Most of our deaths at the hands of police are still ignored, but last week an 11 year old girl named Naomi Wadler once again added black women back to #BlackLivesMatter movement, originally created by Alicia Garza, Opal Tometi, and Patrisse Cullors.
Protest works. It may not work alone. It may not work quickly. But protest is always the beginning of the end of this pocket of white supremacy over here or that pocket of white supremacy over there. And sometimes the beginning is just a hashtag like #BlackLivesMatter or #OscarsSoWhite.

I can't tell you how important it is for little black girls to see themselves at the movies and on television, to see themselves as smart, courageous, magic, and beautiful. I can't even explain how important it is to simply see themselves as not-erased. But April Reign understood how important the erasure of black people at the movies is. And I'm grateful she spoke up.

Black Community Victory: WHITE FAMOUS Flames Out

Before we talk about WHITE FAMOUS, a definition.

Self-hating Black Person
Any black person who supports, endorses, or cosigns the destruction or denigration or erasure of all black people --or even just half of black people at a time, be that half female or male.

FIRST EPISODE:
Seconds in and there's a black woman that's undeniably black who is depicted as nothing but an exposed ass that his friend walks in and drools over.

Six minutes in Don Qui Hotep defends Cosby. (I wonder if this had been filmed a few months later if they'd have defended Harvey Weinstein too.)

Ten minutes in the dark-skinned male star ONCE AGAIN has a racially ambiguous, light-skinned woman as a girlfriend or baby-mama. (like movies DOPE, SLEIGHT etc. etc. etc. etc.....) I'm not even going to get into the black man in a dress thing...as if THAT is the most humiliating thing, AS IF what's coming out of the main actor Jay Pharoah's mouth is NOT stupid enough to be humiliating.

* * * * *
This show seemed exclusively designed for the black hoteppery and their pick-me hoteptresses. I never thought there was enough of them to carry an entire show for multiple seasons and I was right. The Jamie Foxx produced WHITE FAMOUS has been canceled after a single season.

Hallelujah!

This ain't Omarosa-kicked-to-the-curb level good news, but this definitely qualifies as good black news.

May the black female refusal to watch the work created self-hating* black folk continue to destroy shows, movies, and/or careers of those that don't serve the black community. Black Women Rock

PAPPA JOHN GETS A BOOT TO THE BUTT

HE'S OUT AS CEO

OUT OF HIS OWN COMPANY

Feeling Rebloggy
Schnatter, 56, who founded the company in 1984, came under fire in November after he criticized the National Football League’s leadership over national anthem protests by players.
“The NFL has hurt us. And more importantly, by not resolving the current debacle to the player and owners’ satisfaction, NFL leadership has hurt Papa John’s shareholders,” Schnatter had said during the company’s third-quarter earnings call on Nov. 1.
(You may recall Pizza Hut trolled Papa John's that day -- saying their shares were doing juuust fiiine.)
The comments generated huge backlash on social media, prompting the company to tweet an apology for Schnatter’s comments...

JOHN LEWIS DOES IT AGAIN

Feeling Rebloggy

After a week in which news of President Donald Trump’s plans to attend the opening of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum set off a firestorm, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant’s office announced late Thursday night that
Trump will not make
a public appearance at the event.
That’s a change from what Bryant announced Wednesday [yeaaaa!]
On Thursday, multiple planned special guests pulled out of the event, including Congressmen John Lewis (D-GA) and Bennie Thompson (D-MS), who called Trump’s presence an “insult” to the state’s civil rights heroes, and former Mississippi Governor Ray Mabus, who described Trump as an “overt racist.”

The White House criticized Lewis for not joining the president to honor civil rights heroes...apparently having forgotten that Lewis survived KKK endorsed white supremacist elected officials during the Civil Rights movement too

Paramount Admits GHOST IN THE SHELL Bombed At The Box Office Due To White Washing

People of Color standing together makes a difference.

For three years, Asians and other people of color wrote and wrote and wrote articles and blog posts protesting the latest white washing of a POC-story-made-movie, GHOST IN THE SHELL Voice sound off about the hurt and disappointment over e-race-sure. made a difference...Again.

I'm a movie buff and I didn't even consider going to see it. Apparently a lot of other people felt the same way.

File this under protest works.

Paramount even had to admit it was the white washing controversy that did the movie in....and did the movie in big time.

“Ghost in the Shell” was expected to be a box office hit, considering the fact that it’s based on Masamune Shirow’s popular Japanese manga series of the same name and stars A-lister Scarlett Johansson. However, the big-budget film completely bombed on its opening weekend.
The film, which cost about US$110 million to make, only earned a measly $19 million in North American box offices over the weekend, Variety reports.

And what’s even more shocking is that the film was beat out by the debut of “The Boss Baby,” an animated feature about a talking infant, and “Beauty and the Beast,” which was first released three weeks ago. The films earned US$49 million and US$48 million, respectively.
So what went wrong? According to Paramount’s domestic distribution chief Kyle Davies, it had to do with the film’s casting controversy.

I hope everybody involved lost WHOLE BUNCHES-A MONEY. I hope the white GHOST IN THE SHELL crew are calling up the WHITE GODS OF EGYPT white boys to commiserate.

THIS WEEK IN WHITE MEN: THE ADVERTISERS

Two companies revealed that there's nothing but white men or white-men-wanna-be-s in upper management at their companies, as well as the companies they hire to do their advertising.

That's the only excuse I can think of for what happened at Nivea and Pepsi this week.

1. Nivea had pull an ad after massive protest

This company produced an ad called "Whiteness Is Purity" Rumor has it that one of the main markets they were using this in was in the Middle East somewhere.

Wherever Nivea planned to have this ad playing most often...um....uh???? WTH.

I mean...how freaking cut off and white and into yourself do you have to be not see the KKK-ers and the Bannon-loving white nationalists are going to be the ONLY ones loving this ad?

* * * * *

2. Pepsi had to pull an ad after massive protest

The story about Pepsi is slightly more complicated than the Nivea story...on the surface.

Clearly, Pepsi wanted to be all edgy and now. So somebody had the bright idea to center an ad on social protest. However, Pepsi also wanted to be non-committal. (Yeah. These two things make sense together) So they made this ad where the protests sign were seriously generic in the "Can't We All Just Get Along" ala Rodney King manner.

Then this advertisement went one step further: They belittled every protest ever -- especially Black Lives Matter, in my mind-- by having the actress give a Pepsi to a cop which made everything ALL better.

However, mistake number one in my black feminist mind was Pepsi using one of Kardashian/Jenner-Surgery-Sisters as the actor from the jump. You know surgeries I'm talking about, right? The surgeries gotten so as to acquire the black female features that sooo many white folk --and a certain strain of brain-dead-black men-- adore only when they are on non-black women?

Talk about adding insult to injury.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/05/business/kendall-jenner-pepsi-ad.html?_r=0

CONCLUSION 1: Protest Works

CONCLUSION 2:  Daaaayum. Ya'll people of color won't let white folks e-race nuthin no more. Took all that money out of white folks hands by refusing to go see GHOST IN THE SHELL.
Now the white boys at Nivea and the white boys at Pepsi, both, lost a lot of money on an ad they can't use too.

Shame on ya'll

CITY OF SANTA MONICA TAKES 1 BILLION DOLLARS AWAY FROM WELLS FARGO AFTER STANDING ROCK PROTESTS

 FILE THIS UNDER PROTEST WORKS
ESPECIALLY IN PROGRESSIVE CITIES
feeling rebloggy
In a show of support to activists protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline, the Santa Monica City Council moved forward with plans to end the City’s banking relationship with Wells Fargo bank.
The City currently has $1 billion in annual transactions with the bank, including deposits and payments, according to spokeswoman Constance Farrell. Santa Monica’s investment portfolio includes $4.6 million in Wells Fargo bonds.

During a midnight discussion and a lengthy public comment period, Mayor Ted Winterer reminded supporters of the divestment that applause is forbidden at City Council meetings, so when five out of seven members voted to move forward with the motion a wave of jazz hands shot up into the air – a vigorous sign of approval from attendees who pushed for the motion into the early morning hours.

At the beginning of the month, the city of Seattle also voted to divest from Wells Fargo Bank. Seattle decided to take 3 billion dollars worth of business elsewhere.

DAPL VICTORY: DAKOTA ACCESS PIPELINE STOPS AS FINAL PERMIT DENIED BY ARMY CORPS

President Obama and the "Army Corps of Engineers has decided to deny a permit for the construction of a key section of the Dakota Access Pipeline.
The decision essentially halts the construction on the 1,172-mile oil pipeline about half a mile south of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. The decision is also a victory for the thousands of demonstrators across the country who flocked to North Dakota in protest.
"Our prayers have been answered," National Congress of American Indians President Brian Cladoosby said in a statement. "This isn't over, but it is enormously good news. All tribal peoples have prayed from the beginning for a peaceful solution, and this puts us back on track." "

THUG LIFE MASK AT WALMART

HALLOWEEN BRINGS THE WHITE RACISTS OUT FASTER THAN
AN INTERRACIAL WEDDING THESE DAYS

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Thug-Life-Vinyl-Mask-Resembles-Tupac/48197832

The link to buy the mask is dead now.  The Black Lives Matter Boycott has already won one of its objectives.  But do you understand HOW MANY people at Walmart must have approved this halloween mask as a good product to sell before they put it on the shelves?

And if this mask was supposed to resemble Tupac it only does so in the white racist's mind. What's been done here is the equivalent of darkening O J Simpson's picture to make him look like the "big, black guy," who did it.

(And he probably did do it, but that doesn't excuse the attempt to influence white jury pool with racist imagery)

Actually, the Walmart costume is worse.

Isn't it?

Be disgusted. But also file this in your head under protest works.
