Bridging women’s history, the history of the South, and African American history, this book makes a bold argument about the role of white women in American slavery. Historian Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers draws on a variety of sources to show that slave-owning women were sophisticated economic actors who directly engaged in and benefited from the South’s slave market.
Because women typically inherited more slaves than land, enslaved people were often their primary source of wealth. Not only did white women often refuse to cede ownership of their slaves to their husbands, they employed management techniques that were as effective and brutal as those used by slave-owning men.
White women actively participated in the slave market, profited from it, and used it for economic and social empowerment. By examining the economically entangled lives of enslaved people and slave-owning women, Jones-Rogers presents a narrative that forces us to rethink the economics and social conventions of slaveholding America.
The reason I added "male-washing" is because black people have also told the lies described herein about Rosa Parks.
What lie you ask? The lie that's told in schools was this: Rosa Parks was an old woman, sick and tired of being sick and tired. So when she sat down on the bus in a Jim Crow state, she refused to give up her seat for a white person --like she was legally supposed to-- because she was simply too tired to comply.
This was a lie. Rosa Parks was raised by an activist minded grandfather who could pass for white. And she was working for NAACP before that fateful bus ride. Futhermore, she did activist work on the behalf of black women being raped, with impunity, by white men.
Rosa Park's protest on the bus that day were quite deliberate. She, and others before her, refused to get up to make a point about demanding equality.
And black men weren't the ones that created the Montgomery Bus Boycott around her arrest.
It was Jo Ann Robinson and the ???????? that were waiting for such an event so they could stage their pre-planned Montgomery Bus Boycott.
These black women already had a plan in place to spread the word to all black folks to not use the buses. They already had a network in place to provide carpools to get black women to work (mostly as maids).
Rosa Parks and Jo Ann Robinson were the opposite of tired. And Martin Luther King was pulled in to be a spokesperson for the Montgomery Bus Boycott after the first day of the protest was a success. With the support of black churches, communication centers for black neighborhoods, the Boycott continued for a full year...despite houses being bombed etc.
But the poor, old Rosa Parks being too tired to stand up and obey the law story is STILL being sold as Black History by white teachers.

And that's why today's white people are so shocked by disruptive and not technically legal protests today. They've whitewashed and male-washed the truth out of our collective history.
White people don't know our collective racial history. Therefore we are repeating it.
Black people protest.
White people scream about law and order in response...all while praising the white-washed versions of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King.

BARBARA BUSH DURING HURRICANE KATRINA In 2005, Mrs. Bush toured the Astrodome Complex with her husband, former President George H.W. Bush, where displaced victims of Hurricane Katrina were sleeping on cots and on the ground waiting for more permanent shelter. The visit to the Astrodome was meant to counter criticism of her son's obvious lack of responses to black and brown victims in New Orleans. But Barbara Bush followed this tour up by doing a radio program interview where she said,
"What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas... so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway," she said, "so this is working very well for them."
I stopped asking myself this question long ago, but you might want to ask yourself if this statement of hers was...

She said this after her incompetent, callous son, the president, and the incompetent man he hired to head FEMA, Michael D. Brown --of "Brownie', you're doing a heckuva job" fame-- watched dead black and brown bodies float through New Orleans in newly formed rivers of water and mud without much movement to get emergency services moving toward the area to assist victims....who were mostly black, brown, and poor.
Bush Jr. didn't even end his vacation when Hurricane Katrina hit. Nearly 1600 people died in Louisiana alone, and yet it was two or three days before Bush-The-Younger ended his vacation. And he still didn't visit the area on the ground, as is standard for presidents in such catastrophes. Instead, Bush flew over the flooded ninth ward in Air Force one, looking rather blase' about the whole thing.
Maybe he was ticked all those black and brown dead bodies meant he had to end his vakay early?
Then his mother, Barbara Bush, comes along to do damage control and essentially communicates,
'Those people haven't got anything to complain about, sleeping on cots and on the ground in a sporting arena. They're poor. They're used to this. This is working out great for them, maybe even better than the place they used to live in.'
Hellish attitude. Now the white mainstream media is talking about how she was a straight shooter and blunt.
She was, indeed, unmistakably blunt and to the point. Yep, the white supremacy and/or class supremacy came out straight, no chaser. Barbara Bush is dead. I'm sorry for her family. But even on the day of her death, they don't get to tell the hero-story instead of the history.
We're all Americans. And a largish percentage of the non-white section of America do not appreciate the whitewash being done on Babs right now.

Using publicly available government data, as well as Google Maps, we were able to collect the data on the following white trash metrics:
Cities where there are lots of white people
Cities where residents are poorer than average
Cities where a high number of residents are high school dropouts
High drug use
Higher than average Payday Loan Outlets and bargain stores

A BRIEF HISTORY ON BLACKS AND THE WHITE POORThis will only make sense if you know the history of poor white people's attitudes toward black people.

The white poor have been told since this country was formed that they are superior beings due to whiteness. Creating this theory of human value is how the white one-percenters kept them pacified when they were eating grass while the white slave owner down the road got rich off free labor.
The vast majority of white people DID NOT own slaves. But 90 to 95% of whites (mostly poor) helped keep slavery in place by 1) making sure blacks had no where to run and 2) by helping to hunt black slaves down like animals.
There are theories that today's police departments evolved from paddy rollers, the poor white's hired to hunt down runaway slaves.
In other words, chattal slavery could NOT have existed and stayed in place for centuries in the U.s. without the white poor
Why would they do this?
Again, the white one-percenters sold them on the fact that their whiteness made them human while we were not-human
To this day, nothing makes AT LEAST 57% of white people madder than seeing a black person happy, free, or having more OF anything than they do. The inferior are supposed to have less OR they cheated. And that percentage (57%) is likely MUCH higher among poor whites.
Anything that threatens the idea of their own superiority makes the white racist dangerous.
Poor whites became dangerous to black people in the early to mid 1600s and they just showed us JUST how dangerous to us they still are --just now, in 2016, when they voted into the presidency the dumbest, most obvious overt racist this country has seen as a leader in at least 30 years.
Orange Waste-Of-Space's racism comes out like sneezing. He can't even get close to hiding it. And 57% of white people voted in favor of white supremacy.
The white one percent has been leading a large portion of the white uneducated poor around by the nose for centuries now. At least half of the white middle class and upper-middle class, anybody not white super-wealthy have joined them.
When a limited white person --as described by the article-- can't take your job or make the police go after you for dumb sh** like higher classes do, what they CAN DO is be PHYSICALLY VIOLENT.
Poor white people are either the best people on earth -- as far as race relations go -- or the absolute worst in my experience. And the worst outnumber the best 2 to 1 or 3 to 1 in any given neighborhood in my experience. I've lived in three spots within New York, Delaware, Texas, Maryland, and California. And I have real-time (not internet) friends all over the country.

Now, Trump's FEMA* is saying it's not their job to hand out supplies Puerto Rico. FEMA said it's the local governments responsibility
FEMA had the audacity to say this after a category 5 hurricane hit P.R., had the audacity to say this when Puerto Ricans, including local governments, didn't have any electricity or clear roads or fuel or functioning vehicles for a while.
How was the local government supposed to pass out supplies? As of yesterday --three weeks later after the storm has gone-- somewhere near 85% still don't have electricity and up to 60% don't have access to clean drinking water.
Roads are now clear, but local governments, the mayors, are still floundering without drinking water, gasoline, vehicles etc.
If outside help refuses to help distribute supplies, then I guess it's not a mystery as to why supplies aren't moving too far away from the landing zones and docks, is it?
Can you imagine Trump's FEMA saying this crap to white people in Texas and Florida? I can't.

Protectionism and exploitation at its worst.
The island of Puerto Rico is devastated, with millions lacking power, infrastructure destroyed, homes damaged, and an entire year’s worth of agricultural output essentially ruined. Like any disaster-struck place, it will be in need of supplies brought it from elsewhere in the country.
But getting goods from the US mainland to Puerto Rico is much more expensive than sending them to Texas or even to other Caribbean islands as a result of a century-old man-made disaster that’s been crippling the island’s economy for a long time.
Meet the Jones Act, an obscure 1920 regulation that requires that goods shipped from one American port to another be transported on a ship that is American-built, American-owned, and crewed by US citizens or permanent residents.
For most Americans, this isn’t a big deal — it enriches a small number of American shipowners while introducing some weird distortions into the overall pattern of economic activity in the United States.
For the residents of the island of Puerto Rico, though, the Jones Act is huge. Basic shipments of goods from the island to the US mainland, and vice versa, must be conducted via expensive protected ships (and protected companies) rather than exposing them to global competition.
That makes everything Puerto Ricans buy unnecessarily expensive relative to goods purchased on either the US mainland or other Caribbean islands, and drives up the cost of living on the island overall.

Since this poem can still found this at SCHOLASTIC, a producer of children's books, I'm going to have assume teachers are still using this to whitewash Columbus. This is nothing short of crime because Christopher Columbus was nothing short of a devil in human skin. I just didn't know how big a devil until I read the comic at the link below.
I already knew Christopher Columbus left the Americas and went back to Spain for more boats and equipment because he'd seen gold around the native's necks. Even the song taught to children speaks of Columbus going back to Spain then returning again to the Americas (Bahamas)
I already knew and still know you can't discover land people are already living on.
As an older kid, I would eventually know Columbus and his crew brought all sort of diseases with them, including sexually transmitted diseases.
However, I did not know that Christopher Columbus and Queen Isabella and everybody else with an education knew the world was round before Columbus sailed the ocean blue. That is, I knew the Greeks had proven this to be so centuries earlier. But I didn't know that this news had traveled, even to Spain, France and England. So proving the world was round was not one of Columbus's goals like they told to us in elementary school.

LINKING WHITEWASHED TEXTBOOKS AND WHITE VIOLENCE This is what is being taught in a Texas School in 2015. And since most school textbooks in U.S. come out of Texas, it might be in one of your children's textbooks too.
Slaves are identified in a section on "immigration" as "workers" that appeared in the U.S. to work on plantations.
But I submit to you that it is of limited importance that this is being taught to black children.
If you as a parent of black child have any sense at all, your black child knows better. But this book pours gasoline on white-on-black violence. This book and thousands of books just like it help to create the situation we have now.
There are actually white people who actually believe that Irish indentured servants and black slaves were treated equally. Some of these same white people brag about their Irish ancestor's ability to overcome...as if their ability to be absorbed into whiteness had nothing to do with the current success of the Irish.
Identifying the white indentured servant and black slave as social equals who received equal oppression is colorblindness at its most foul.
More importantly, it is ignorance like this that produces a white base from which white extremists like Dylann Roof can mentally feed.
The ignorance in books like the textbook shown above produces a percentage of population that watches a "Fox and Friends" segment about how Black Lives Matters is all about black folk out-victiming everybody else which makes the Black Lives Matters Textbook something that undermines the black community INSTEAD OF something that is educational and desperately needed by the white community.
Bottom line is this: White Ignorance Matters because White-On-Black Crime Is Rampant Yet Not Being Identified As Crime.
Ben Affleck lying about his slave owning heirs is part of that perpetuation of ignorance. Henry Louis Gates Jr failing to be a gatekeeper may not be the bigger part of perpetuating white willful ignorance, but Gates' betrayal was the most galling to me. We, as black people, cannot afford to help white people maintain their ignorance of their own history.
The truth being kept twenty steps removed from white children explains a lot about how white adults can claim such astounding amounts of racial ignorance in the face of the deaths of so many black people at the hands of police. To some of the white and willfully ignorant, black deaths at the hands of police are simply coming out of nowhere....instead of being a 400 year continuation of the same-ole-same-ole. BUT ONLINE PROTEST WORKS McGraw-Hill, the publisher of the textbook said the following:

This program addresses slavery in the world in several lessons and meets the learning objectives of the course. However, we conducted a close review of the content and agree that our language in that caption did not adequately convey that Africans were both forced into migration and to labor against their will as slaves.
We believe we can do better. To communicate these facts more clearly, we will update this caption to describe the arrival of African slaves in the U.S. as a forced migration and emphasize that their work was done as slave labor. These changes will be reflected in the digital version of the program immediately and will be included in the program’s next print run.

Clearly, this statement should be considered back-pedaling UNTIL WE FOLLOW THROUGH on making sure that McGraw-Hill actually follows through on making changes to their textbooks.
Question is, how do we do it? How do we follow up and follow through on applying pressure to McGraw-Hill? To tell the truth, I'm wondering if we can move Textbook creating out of Texas altogether. Texas and Florida have a certain reputation with people of color and it's an ugly one.
While the parents of black children have little or no choice but to initiate a conversation with their children about the precariousness of black life, the parents of non-black children can and often do shield their kids from the knowledge of anti-black violence, which is foundational to the continuation of white supremacy and that violence.

Fox and Friends, using the black face of Larry Elder, are busy trying to redefine the Black Lives Matter Movement as one group trying to out-victim another. So get this textbook and take it to a school near you. If you're going to live here, pay taxes here, and have children here then be proactive about changing this country from the roots.

The crazy criticism aside, Halle Berry and Barack Obama are NOT getting this kind of push back. I'm not saying they never got any. I'm saying they are not being pulled apart like Zendaya seems to be routinely.
And I think you have to ask yourself why?
When I ask myself why, I think back to when Zendaya tried to get the role of Aaliyah in a Lifetime movie of the week (or some such nonsense). At the time, I scoured the internet for how she identified. I couldn't find much of anything except her father is black. I did NOT find one thing that said Zendaya claimed to be black. And I looked hard.
Again, unlike Halle Berry and Barack Obama, I did NOT see her decision to identify as "Black," "Black American," or "African American." However, I did see what I consider white run sites, like wikipedia, identify her as "bi-racial" which is a different identity CHOICE from "African American" --- "Bi-racial" is a choice much like Tiger Woods' choice to dislike being called "African American" (look up the Oprah episode)*
In fact, I didn't see one claim to blackness from Zendaya (or any hair in locks) until AFTER she lost the role of Aaliyah. Her sincerity about wanting to be black now is as suspect as Tiger Woods or Mariah Carey might be if they jumped up and claimed blackness all of a sudden. One drop rule or no one drop rule racial/ethnic identity involves a choice.

You do NOT GET multiple choices base on what's good for your career in 2012 or 2013 or 2014 or 2015.
Compare: Halle Berry and Barack Obama may be identified as "bi-racial" on various sites too. But there's information all over the net, left, right, center, up, and down that Halle and Barack identify as "African American" And that information was out there and everywhere BEFORE they were known to us actress or politician.
On a not-so-separate note, white society is suspect when it chooses ultra light-skinned women like Halle, Zendaya or Vanessa Williams (who has two black parents) to represent blackness FIRST, MOST, and damn near always. And light-skinned, white featured, recently mixed race folk ought to be just as suspicious if they are indeed identifying as "Black," "Black American," or "African American."
Every single of one us light or dark, if we're so "united" ought to be tired of the opportunity boat always being so dang loaded at the light end that the dark end of the boat is sticking up in the air.* And one end of the boat sticking up in the air always means the entire thing is on the verge of sinking.
All shades of my family recognize white preference for light skinned folk, recently mixed women should be able to do the same. That is maybe Zendaya's joy ought to be mixed with a little cynicism.
I'm trying to imagine Jesse Williams in the same situation in an alternate reality where boys have barbies. I'm trying to imagine Williams having a barbie lovingly made of his paleness and him not calling Mattel out for not making a doll of Lupita Nyong'o. I really cannot imagine him watch yet another white run business choose ultra pale blackness as representative over and over again for decades and not saying something about it. Can you?
Frankly, if light-skinned women are deciding they cannot need see white preference for light-skinned women in the decision to make this doll, in fashion, in the music industry, television* and movies --which is why actor wins for women that look like Lupita Nyongo and Viola Davis have been SOOO celebrated-- then some of these skin-tone blind light-skinned women are just a darker shade of pale. That is, light folks who cannot see light-skinned privilege (ESPECIALLY those with white features) are very much like white folks who cannot see white privilege. Only the light-skinned privileged* ARE black and they are attacking us from the inside. (*-Rumor has it light-skinned men readily admit their privilege. This may be linked to the fact that men's worth isn't so tied to physical appearance in this society.)
Our conversations about light-skinned and dark-skinned people need to be a lot more nuanced than they have been. The jealousy from dark-skinned women over light preferences is as real as some light-skinned women's callous disregard for the pain causing the jealousy.
Shunning the colorism conversation, dark and light, by saying we're all the same,
all while claiming
it'll get better
if you just stop talking about it
(much like white folk say about racism)
all while leaving out
black men's inability
to challenge other black men
who claim colorblind sexual habits
while only dating light and white
is only going to get us more of the same.
The only positive thing I'm willing to say about Zendaya, at this point, is that she's young. And she gets to make a FIRST choice. And this really may be her first adult choice as far as racial identity goes. And she gets to choose to be African American. But her timing is suspect and she should take her lumps or explain herself because I get a say too.
I get to say whether or not Zendaya looks like my sister, just like Halle, Vanessa, and Viola do, or if she looks like some outsider trying to get over by using my identity.
Again, Zendaya is young. I get that. But if Zendaya is going to be African American, she better hurry up and grow into it...if she can. Throwing some locks on her head to be edgy after she loses an acting role isn't working for me.

Let me say it again, our conversations about light-skinned and dark-skinned people need to be a lot more nuanced than they have been. We have been repeating white racism within the black race in the form of colorism for decades and decades --to the point where being light-skinned is somewhat linked with class. Ignoring shade differences hasn't worked any better than white people ignoring race differences so as to claim colorblindness.
Refusing to talk about race at all except to say "We are all one race, the human race. It'll go away if you stop talking about it..."

Refusing to talk about colorism at all to except to say, "We are all one black race. It'll go away if you just stop talking about it" has not worked in over 100 years and it never will.
