THE GRADUAL REALIZATION OF A NEW NORMAL

A repost
2015

Last year or the year before that someone on the news announced that Rhoda, a character on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" was might die of brain cancer.

I hadn't thought of Rhoda, played by Valerie Harper, in years, possibly decades. I couldn't believe it when they said she was over 70 years old. That brought me back to thinking about my own age.

Couldn't believe that either.

All this inability to believe started me thinking about how MANY things that I now consider "normal" simply weren't when I was born. No internet, GPS, or microwaves. As the list of things we didn't have as a kid got longer, longer, and longer still, I re-realized that I was born a decade BEFORE women could easily get credit in their own name!!!

When I was a girl, I heard about this new law that made women able to get credit on their own. I can just barely remember thinking, "Well yeeeaah....of course!" I was shocked that an actual law had to be written to ensure this. I also remember being desperately glad that I hadn't been born a few decades earlier.

It's not so surprising that I thought this way, I suppose.

I grew up watching and listening to feminism in what I considered "common sense" slogans as well as slices of speeches from Angela Davis, Gloria Steinem etc. I thought all this "common sense" already existed. I guess I knew but I didn't REALLY know this "common sense" was...
--in the process of being born
--in the process of being fought for, of being protected
--and voted on.

In the 1970s, when black women were almost entirely absent from television, I didn't know my "normal" was being created and then reinforced by the white women of television, such as Mary Tyler Moore and Sally Struthers, who played Gloria in "All In The Family". I simply didn't know that they were representative of a new way of life for women, a new option.

I didn't know women making their own money, working at a career, and making decisions that a WHOLE person with equal rights tends to make, sometimes looking for another WHOLE person (a man) to walk through life with - was new.

After all, my Mom did this for a few years before she married. A lot of black women did, maybe most black women did.

But Mary Tyler Moore's job was not a pit stop before marriage, like my mother's was supposed to be. Mary Tyler Moore's job was important to her and contributed to society like a man's does. She wanted to be good at her career, succeed at it. She wanted a relationship, maybe a husband, but all of her energy and focus was not on getting a husband.

That was a very different choice to have, one that wasn't there for women of my mother's generation. Or if it was, it was seen as failure. A career was seen as consolation prize for many women and for the people who felt sorry for them.

More importantly, it was seen as a status symbol for a man if his wife didn't have to work -- what the wife did or didn't want, be damned.

At 10 to 12 years of age, I hadn't grasped the fact that I wasn't considered as capable as or as equal to a male child either. (Well...most of the time I didn't) But somehow, I DID know that I was considered less-than as a person because of my black skin...by the majority of people in the country.

Racism, somehow, I knew this practically from birth.

As sheltered as I was in some ways, I had eyes. Newspaper headlines shouted white supremacy at me daily, no matter what my parents tried to keep from seeing. And I couldn't walk past a television, without seeing a white cop sic a big dog with huge teeth on black people or take a fire hose to them.
As far back as kindergarten those were the images that flashed in my head the day Show-and-Tell featured a white police officer talking about how 'a policeman is your friend' ('Oooh no-No-NO! not MY friend!!!' I thought to myself.)
The racism-sexism knowledge gap (read: chasm) is another train wreck for another time. The point I'm trying to make here is that I was taught nothing about the parallel issue of sexism.

As a girl-child born in the land of the free and the equal, I thought Mary Tyler Moore and the rest of these characters were representing "normal" people with "normal" desires. Eventually, a lot of people came to see them that way...having laughed a little by the end of each episode.

Maybe the writing was special, like some like to believe it was. "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" made the new, more feminist(?) world seem mundane. I don't know for sure. I simply cannot remember what I was thinking at the time then rehash something I really didn't notice to begin with.

But when I heard that Rhoda was sick? Maybe dying? That was when I remembered that women didn't always have..

  • the same ability to keep a job. A woman in her 20s could be fired because it was assumed she'd want to have a baby, soon or within a few years.
  • the same ability to get credit, and before that - the same ability to own property
  • the same right to vote.
These changes didn't just change by magic.

It wasn't the "something special in the writing" of these television shows that created these changes in society. These shows only reflected what was already in the process of happening. But shows like "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" blew little more air on a fire already burning, a fire that had been burning for more than a century

That air was important.

But more important are the women that sacrificed and died advocating 'for women's rights on the grounds of that women should have political, social, and economic equality to men'--which is THE definition of feminism.

Did you know that some of the women who started one of the most important feminist organizations in the country, the National Organization for Women or N.O.W., were black?

I didn't until a few years ago.

A number of black women had a meeting after the meeting that was known as "The March On Washington" Why? Because black female civil rights leaders like Dorothy Height and Diane Nash were not allowed on stage to speak, deliberately not allowed to speak

...by black men I was taught to worship as a child.

The story goes, having forgotten their be-seen-and-not-heard place, Gloria Richardson, Rosa Parks and other black female civil rights leaders were sent back to the local hotel in a cab. And they were in that cab while Martin Luther King was giving his "I Have A Dream" speech. They listened to it on the radio. (It was all Lena Horne's fault. Earlier in the day she had spent some time trying to introduce Rosa Parks to the foreign press.)

http://www.democracynow.org/2013/8/27/civil_rights_pioneer_gloria_richardson_91

So, while too many people have let this word "feminism" be redefined by the status-quo loving / cowering-in-the-face-of-change opposition (and pro-feminist extremists too for that matter) I refuse to let anyone else redefine "feminism" FOR ME. I refuse to let them define it as something as silly as who should open the door for who OR something as ass-i-nine as "man-hater."

-- in much the same way as I refuse to let some white people redefine "African American" as someone who is more loyal to Africa than America simply because the word "Africa" comes first.
-- in much the same way as I refuse to let some blacks redefine "blackness" as being loyal to anything and anyone in black skin.

So I deeply believe in feminism even though:

1) I do not believe in ALL the positions that the official feminist organizations believe in (Abortion as a form of birth control method no matter how far along the pregnancy is, is just one example. Time limits are a discussion female lawmakers need to have with one another)

2) I do not believe the words "sexual objectification" are meaningless at the very same time that I do know women need more "sexual freedom."
3) I know that white feminists have put themselves first at the same rate of speed, or faster, that black anti-racists have put black men first. And in my patriarchy-soaked brain, women are supposed to be "better than that."

4) etc

And even thought I know all this heavy feminism baggage exists, what I ALSO know is that all of us ought to be grateful for "The New Normal."

And I mean ALL of us, men and women. I know I am.

And I, for one, can't WAIT to see what feminism inspires next!

Can you?

TRUMP'S EMBOLDENED WHITE RACISM AIMED AT BLACK WOMEN JOURANLISTS

Feeling Rebloggy
"President Trump has made no secret of his contempt for reporters, whom he calls “fake news” and “enemy of the American people.” He’s also had unkind things to say about women and people who are African American. "

‘What a stupid question’: Trump demeans three black female reporters in three days

This week, he hit a trifecta, singling out three African American women who are journalists. The women — Abby Phillip, April Ryan and Yamiche Alcindor — earned his contempt apparently just for asking him questions.
Trump called one of Phillip’s questions “stupid,” described Ryan as “a loser” and brushed off Alcindor, saying her question was “racist.”
Phillip, a CNN reporter and former Washington Post journalist, drew Trump’s wrath on Friday, after she asked whether he hoped Matthew G. Whitaker, Trump’s appointee as acting attorney general, would “rein in” special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s probe of Trump’s presidential campaign.
What a stupid question that is. What a stupid question,” Trump snapped. He didn’t answer the allegedly “stupid” question, but he did pour more contempt on Phillip. “I watch you a lot,” he said. “You ask a lot of stupid questions.”
He suggested he was considering pulling other reporters’ press credentials to cover the White House, as he did with CNN reporter Jim Acosta on Wednesday. Among those he brought up in that context was Ryan....

IF WE LEFT, THEY WOULDN'T HAVE NOBODY

A repost from 2015

"The staff at the Valley Springs Manor left when they stopped getting paid — except for cook Maurice Rowland and Miguel Alvarez, the janitor.
"There was about 16 residents left behind, and we had a conversation in the kitchen, 'What are we going to do?' " Rowland says.
"If we left, they wouldn't have nobody," the 34-year-old Alvarez says.

Maurice Rowland and Miguel Alvarez - originally from NPR.ORG and STORYCORPS.ORG

Their roles quickly transformed for the elderly residents, who needed round-the-clock care."I would only go home for one hour, take a shower, get dressed, then be there for 24-hour days," says Alvarez.

Rowland, 35, remembers passing out medications during those long days. He says he didn't want to leave the residents — some coping with dementia — to fend for themselves.

"I just couldn't see myself going home — next thing you know, they're in the kitchen trying to cook their own food and burn the place down," Rowland says. "Even though they wasn't our family, they were kind of like our family for this short period of time."

For Alvarez, the situation brought back memories from his childhood.

"My parents, when they were younger, they left me abandoned," he says. "Knowing how they are going to feel, I didn't want them to go through that."

Alvarez and Rowland spent several days caring for the elderly residents of Valley Springs Manor until the fire department and sheriff took over.

The incident led to legislation in California known as the Residential Care for the Elderly Reform Act of 2014.

"If I would've left, I think that would have been on my conscience for a very long time," says Rowland."

DOJ JEFF SESSIONS REPLACED BY SOMEONE WITH PLAN TO STARVE RUSSIA INVESTIGATION OF MONEY

feeling rebloggy

For nearly as long as FBI special counsel Robert Mueller has been investigating Russian election meddling, activists have been planning mass protests in the case that Donald Trump interferes with the probe.
Today (Nov. 7), those fears were realized when Trump asked attorney general Jeff Sessions for his resignation. Sessions, who had recused himself from the investigation, will be replaced by Matt Whitaker, a former US Attorney who has opposed the Russia investigation from the start. Whitaker is reportedly taking control of the probe from Rob Rosenstein. the deputy attorney general.
Hundreds of protests across the US, organized by MoveOn in combination with 100 other activist groups, will take place at 5pm tomorrow, local time, organizers said, “to demand Acting U.S. Attorney General Matthew Whitaker recuse himself immediately from overseeing the Russia investigation.”

JIM CROW IN IDAHO: No Charges For John R K Howard After Sodomizing Disable Black Teen With Hanger

This mofo plead guilty. Hell is waiting for him. The sooner he goes, the better. The judge can hold his hand on the way down.

What happened here is why you vote in every election you can. Judges can be removed. Just a few months back, in Northern California they removed kicked out the judge that gave Brock Turner a light sentence for rape.

There aren't enough black folks in Idaho to shake a stick at. But I am assuming some white folks have a conscience there and will continue to act upon it no matter how long the Hater-In-Chief is in  the White House.

TRUMP FLEXIN BEFORE THE ELECTION FOR COLLECTION WITH THE COMPLEXION OF PROTECTION

KKK
NEO NAZIS

ALT-RIGHT
PROUD BOYS
NATIONALISTS
WHITE NATIONALISTS

It should be clear by now they all fall
under the umbrella of

THE
RADICAL WHITE RIGHT

And if all of these groups and groups
and just like them
were identified as domestic terrorists,
as they should have been a long time ago,
13 to 15 people might still be alive right now.

October 16 2018, Trump Tweet
“The United States has strongly informed the President of Honduras that if the large Caravan of people heading to the U.S. is not stopped and brought back to Honduras, no more money or aid will be given to Honduras, effective immediately!”

The apparent impetus for this outrage was a segment on Fox News that morning that detailed a migrant caravan thousands of miles away in Honduras. The caravan, which began sometime in mid-October, is made up of refugees fleeing violence in their home country. Over the next few weeks, Trump did his best to turn the caravan into a national emergency.
Trump falsely told his supporters that there were “criminals and unknown Middle Easterners” in the caravan, a claim that had no basis in fact and that was meant to imply that terrorists were hiding in the caravan—one falsehood placed on another...
https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/10/caravan-lie-sparked-massacre-american-jews/574213/
And when some small to medium percentage of them do get here, they have the right to apply for asylum --same as always.  And those that don't get asylum will be turned away. This has happened dozens and dozens and dozens of times before.

There was no national emergency -- for a group of people 900 to 1000 miles away at the time that will take weeks to get here. And even Orange Nitwit knew that. Yet...
October 20, 2018 Trump remarks to reporters,
“You have some very tough criminal elements within the caravan. But I will seal off the border before they come into this country, and I’ll bring out our military, not our reserves. I’ll bring out our military.”
 October 22 2018, Trump tweet
“Criminals and unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in. I have alerted Border Patrol and Military that this is a National Emergy [sic]. Must change laws!” (Trump tweet, Oct. 22)
October 22, 2018, Trump remarks to reporters
“Go into the middle of the caravan, take your cameras and search. Okay? Search. . . . You’re going to find MS-13, you’re going to find Middle Eastern, you’re going to find everything.” (Trump remarks to reporters, Oct. 22)
October 22, 2018, Sarah Sanders (Back up singer #1)
“Absolutely. We have [evidence], and we know that this is a continuing problem. It’s not just in this. We have 10 individuals, suspected or known terrorists, that try to enter our country illegally every day.”
The terrorize-ers we really have to worry about are the ones coming out of the radical right end of the republican party.  They are the ones pouring gas on the pre-existing conspiracy theories of their murderous white racist cousins.

In case you haven't noticed, white liberals are just waking up to the fact that some of them are running the country right now.
They are just becoming aware that Trump and his minions, in an effort to scare voters into voting white-and-right, are inspiring terrorists with the phony stats and threats of non-white invasion and non-white take over.
  • Trump going as far as he could to condone the shooting of black people by police officer apparently  wasn't enough to convince most white liberals that Trump doesn't just have a "racism problem," that he doesn't just say "racist things" but that he is a white racists and that he is trying to appeal to white racists.
By now, even white people, should understand that every tweet and remark about immigrants coming out of Trump and the Pips mean the same thing...
THE BROWN PEOPLE ARE COMING!!!

THE BROWN PEOPLE ARE COMING!!!
MAKE AMERICA WHITE AGAIN IS IN JEOPARDY!

October 22 2018,
The First pipe-bomb is reported near Democrat George Soros' Home

October 23 2018, VP Mike Pence (Back Up Singer #2)
Live Interview With Washington Post
“In the last fiscal year we apprehended more than 10 terrorists or suspected terrorists per day at our southern border from countries that are referred to in the lexicon as ‘other than Mexico’ ― that means from the Middle East region.”

October 23 & 24 2018,
Cesar Sayoc, his name unknown at the time, attempts and succeeds at having pipe-bombs delivered to President Barack and Michelle Obama, Eric Holder, Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Bill and Hillary Clinton

Two bombs were sent to Maxine Waters, but they were intercepted at a mail facility.

CNN gets a mysterious package too

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/pipe-bomb-timeline-cesar-sayoc_us_5bd36a31e4b055bc948bb5ed

October 25 2018,

Pipe-bomb packages meant for Joe Biden and Robert DeNiro (who isn't the only Hollywood star sounding off, but has a black wife) are intercepted by police and federal authorities.

October 26 2018,
"Friday: Four More Bombs ― And An Arrest
A package addressed to Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) Tom Steyer was similarly headed off in Burlingame, California, before it could be delivered....  Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper "

While only 13% of the United States population is black and the percentage of black politicians is probably less than half that, black politicians were heavily over represented in Sayoc's target list. And if you count Rochelle Ritchie, Sayoc's target list was 50% black. And he sent Maxine waters not one but two bombs.

Maxine says she ain't scared. But we all should be because this isn't just happenstance. Trump made this radical white republican racist pop off...And he's pour gas on the country's white supremacists very deliberately.

Again....
Some may say Cesar Sayoc, the incompetent Radical White Right would-be bomber is not white.
Sayoc looks white enough to pass to me, and probably to himself too. It seems probable to me that he used "the enemy of my enemy is my
Rochelle Ritchie
friend" (il)logic to see his would-be bombings as the last ticket he might need into whiteness. This was the path the Irish took into whiteness more than 100 years ago, by the way. The Irish were not considered white, so they changed their clothes and their accents and declared they hated black people even more than the original white people did.

And it worked. This, indeed, is how the Irish became white.
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/305686.How_the_Irish_Became_White
Sayoc's desire to identify with other white supremacists would tend to explain why he chose Rochelle Ritchie, a black female commentator, to threaten two weeks for his final pipe bomb attack -- threats nobody took seriously.

Trump identifying with white nationalist groups poured even more gas on the violent right radicals calling themselves White Nationalists, KKK, alt-Right, Proud Boys, or Neo Nazis.

And nobody but the willfully white ignorant has been fooled by Trump leaving the "white" out of "White Nationalist" --not even the hate-filled radical white right murderers and would be murderers making headlines in matter of days last week. But white dominated main stream media has been pretending "nationalist" doesn't mean "white nationalist for years up to this point.

The main stream media made Trumpthuglicans sound as benign as possible by calling them "nationalists" instead of "white nationalists"  -- right up until a white woman was killed at Charlottesville.

October 24 2018
In the middle of the pipe-bomb domestic terrorist attack, another white male terrorist shot two people, one inside and another just outside, a Kentucky Kroger after failing to enter a black church where he would have become the next Dylan Roof...

It took Jeffersontown Police Chief Sam Rogers four days to say the slayings were racially motivated, telling churchgoers Sunday the issue is "the elephant in the room." Maurice Stallard, 69, and Vickie Lee Jones, 67, were killed.
Rogers was speaking at First Baptist Church of Jeffersontown, a predominantly black church that police said the suspect tried to enter minutes before opening fire at Kroger.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2018/10/30/kroger-shooting-push-call-slayings-hate-crime/1817949002/

A day or two later and another white male domestic terrorist shot up a synagogue full of Jewish people, a left leaning group of white people --like many others-- that have always fallen out of whiteness the minute the white supremacy becomes more overt.

The [Trump Fueled Caravan] Conspiracy Theory That Led to The Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting, explained
Before he opened fire in a mass shooting that killed 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday, witnesses say the gunman shouted, “All Jews must die.”
But the particular moment he (allegedly) chose for his massacre, and the place he chose to do it, show that what radicalized the assailant to the point of violence was a specific manifestation of anti-Semitism: blaming Jews in America for bringing in an invasion of nonwhite immigrants who would slaughter the white race.

His last post on the pro-hate-speech social-media site Gab, posted minutes before the synagogue massacre, spells it out — with a reference to HIAS, the Jewish nonprofit that resettles refugees in the United States:
HIAS likes to bring invaders that kill our people.
I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered.
Screw your optics, I’m going in.
The obsession that appears to have tipped the gunman over the edge was a conspiracy theory insinuating that the migrant caravan currently making its way through southern Mexico, and which President Donald Trump and conservative media have treated as an existential threat to the United States, is a Jewish plot.
https://www.vox.com/2018/10/29/18037580/pittsburgh-shooter-anti-semitism-racist-jewish-caravan

Following these Right White Radical Republican murders Trump doubled down on the white racism. He continued to attempt to provoke white people to be terrified of the destitute and desperate brown people headed this way -- even a Fox News Commentator came out and said Trump was fear mongering. Fox News, arguably the preferred news outlet for racists worldwide, removed a racist ad Trump put out too.

White supremacy has been above board and on the table for a while now. But Trump put a giant spotlight on his white supremacy over the last two weeks. And he knows what he's doing. He knows his base loves him for his white supremacy, not in spite of it as the mainstream press would have you believe.

And some white liberals are going for this. Some white liberals still believe white people voted for Trump and against Hillary because Hillary was awkward during some of her press events, because they didn't like her personality.

It is just beyond some white liberals ken that their mothers, fathers, sisters, uncles, and cousins love Trump BECAUSE of his white supremacy. They have never ever heard mama, daddy and nem say the n-word or set a cross on fire, therefore mama, daddy, and nem can't be white supremacists loving white supremacy.

The white dominated, main stream press has tried to obscure the motives of white republican voters during hate week (the week of the shootings) though they are probably unaware of doing so. White people, in general, hate saying other white people are doing bad things in the name of whiteness. Like the would be Dylann Roof said in Kentukcy, "White people don't shoot other white people." And they don't. The white press doesn't even want to do so verbally.

This is why the white dominated press said Cesar Sayoc targeted democrats -- which he did. But what Sayoc mostly did was target a set of not-white people called "black people," (damn near all of whom hate Chump and are therefore Democrats. )
The two people shot in and near Kroger by Gregory Bush in Kentucky were not-white people (black) too.
And, again, Jewish people are not counted as white once the white supremacy crosses a certain threshold especially when they reach out to help brown people, like those in the Caravan. This is why those killed at the Tree Of Life Synagogue likely became even less white to a white racist like Radical White Right Murderer, Robert Bowers
After that tax cut for this country's very white one-percenters and the resulting 17% increase in the deficit, the only thing trickling down form the White House is white supremacy.

And it's obvious to all but the willfully stupid and/or racist.

Trump is indirectly responsible for the deaths of more than a dozen Americans, those that are black and those considered not-quite- white- enough (Jewish people).  And if Cesar Sayoc had been a more competent bomber President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Vice President Biden, Maxine Waters, Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Robert DeNiro and other vocally anti-racist, anti hatred-of-immigrants, and anti-Trump politicians would have been statistics as well.

The only reign of terror we can end for sure is Trump's. All we have to do is vote. By voting we can cut away some of the hedge around him by voting those right wing suckers out and replacing them with democrats who are a lot more benign ...even if they are not even planning to be effective.

Bottomline: If the left gets control of the House and maybe the Senate too (unlikely), then the Hater In Chief's protection is greatly reduced.

So vote like your life and the lives of your children depend on it, because it probably does. And like someone wrote the other day:

If you don't have somebody at the table to represent you, then you will wind up on the menu.
Midterm Election 2018 is nothing less than a referendum on white supremacy.  So make somebody in a MAGGOT hat cry. Go out and vote somebody black or brown into office. Go out and vote against the white supremacists even if you can't find anybody black or brown to vote for. Just vote.

Our democracy is on a back hill slide that we need to stop before we can start inching forward again, regardless of what you think of those called  "the democrats."
VOTE

IMAGINE

Imagine being trapped on a boat, stacked like this....for weeks, sometimes months. Suffering from malnutrition, beatings, [raped by white men before you were even put on the boat], and if you got too sick from the unsanitary conditions, you were thrown overboard to the sharks. Or they just let you die in chains....sandwiched between the living.

If you rebelled even a little bit, you were thrown overboard to the sharks. [Sharks migratory and feeding patterns changed during slavery there was so much "food" thrown overboard during the middle passage.]
[Imagined being chained, if and when you were on deck, to many, many others so you could not commit suicide ]
After enduring all of this...you were sold in markets like cattle and worked to death. Your children and their children and their children's children lived their entire lives out in bondage.
And [very nearly] none were ever able to go back home.
Our ancestors endured unimaginable brutalities. When we remember our ancestors, we must remember this.
I honor those that have come before me. I honor those who sleep beneath the waves.

Oprah to campaign in Georgia for Democrat Stacey Abrams

Feeling Rebloggy
Billionaire media mogul Oprah Winfrey is giving a last-minute boost to Georgia's Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams on Thursday just days before one of the nation's tightest elections reaches the finish line.

Winfrey is set to campaign with Abrams, the former minority leader of the Georgia state House, at a pair of rallies — one at 12:30 p.m. ET and the other at 2:30 p.m. ET. Winfrey, who has been the subject of 2020 rumors at various points during the year, will also join Abrams in knocking on voters' doors as part of the visit.
"Oprah Winfrey has inspired so many of us though the years with her unparalleled ability to form real connections and strengthen the bonds of family and community," Abrams told NBC News in a statement on Wednesday, when the visit was first announced.

THE ACLU WINS ITS VOTER PURGE CASE IN OHIO

Feeling Rebloggy

BACKGROUND First, similar stories of voter purges happening in Texas and in Georgia too. Then read about Ohio where the
ACLU won a reversal today.

BACKGROUND 1: THE TEXAS PURGE
Lane was one of 4,000 voters whose registrations were personally challenged by a single Republican, Alan Vera, who chairs the Harris County GOP’s “Ballot Security Committee.”
This sort of individual challenge is illegal in some states, but Texas law permits it. Republicans blamed the county’s election registrar, a Democrat, for automatically suspending the registrations of 1,700 of those voters — but not before Vera boasted on his Facebook page about what he was up to:
Voters whose registrations were suspended for failure to return a confirmation postcard would have to cast provisional ballots, which are “reviewed by the Ballot board,” he wrote, “and I appoint all Republican members of that board.” His “project,” he added, “could make a big difference in the November election results.”
Stories like Lane’s are becoming all too familiar to a growing number of American voters, who are being dropped from the rolls at a rapid clip, particularly in states with histories of voter discrimination.
Such purges are the new face of voter suppression, civil rights advocates say. Unlike the Jim Crow laws of yore, which blocked access to the rolls with tests and taxes, voter purges take registered voters — often, voters of color — and make them disappear. And unlike voter ID laws, which at least give voters advanced warning, purges can be sudden, silent, untraceable, and irremediable.

BACKGROUND 2: THE GEORGIA PURGE
(by a man now running for governor)
Even by Georgia standards, the voter purge of late July 2017 was remarkable. In a single day, more than half a million people — 8 percent of Georgia’s registered voters — were cut from the voter rolls. Republican Secretary of State Brian Kemp, an avid supporter of President Donald Trump who has described himself as a “politically incorrect conservative,” oversaw the removals eight months after he’d declared himself a candidate for governor.
Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp are competing in a potentially historic toss-up race to become Georgia’s next governor.

The purge was noteworthy for another reason: For an estimated 107,000 of those people, their removal from the voter rolls was triggered not because they moved or died or went to prison, but rather because they had decided not to vote in prior elections, according to an APM Reports analysis. Many of those previously registered voters may not even realize they’ve been dropped from the rolls. If they show up at the polls on Nov. 6 to vote in the heated Georgia governor’s race, they won’t be allowed to cast a ballot.

TODAY'S HEADLINE IN OHIO

Federal judges order Ohio to allow purged voters back in

Federal judges on Wednesday ordered Ohio to allow voters who had been purged for not voting over a six-year period to participate in this year's election.
A divided 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel granted an emergency motion sought by voting-rights groups. The ruling overturned in part an Oct. 10 ruling by a federal judge that said voters haven't been illegally purged from Ohio's rolls.
Plaintiffs led by the A. Philip Randolph Institute in June lost their broader challenge to Ohio's election administration process as unconstitutional when the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in favor of Ohio's practices.

  • At issue is a method Ohio uses to identify people who have moved and are no longer eligible to vote. The state sends notices to those who fail to cast a ballot during a two-year period. People who do not respond and don't vote over the next four years, including in two more federal elections, are dropped from the list of registered voters.
In other words, if you miss a single midterm election in Ohio, you're warned about being dropped. If you then miss a presidential election, then another midterm, you're dropped of the registered rolls.

In other words, people in Ohio who only vote in presidential elections? If they're sick and skip a single election, they'll no longer be registered in Ohio because there will have been an 8 year gap -- and all you are allowed 2 before  you get a warning in the mail and a total of 6 years is all you are allowed, as far as not voting goes, in Ohio.

The republicans rejoice every single time less people are able to vote.

Gee, I wonder why that is?

However, today, the ACLU won a temporary battle in time for next week's election because voters weren't notified properly that this was happening.

Jim Crow style laws are mostly after black and brown people, but a bunch of white people are going to get caught up in this too. Because now that the Supreme Court has said that this voter purging is legal if the notifications are right, voter purging is going to spread across the country

...unless we flip state governments out of republican hands too.

Lesson 1: Vote in all midterms

Lesson 2: Vote in all local elections

We need to change the democratic party for the browner and bolder. That means we need Stacy Abrams to win in Georgia and Andrew Gillium to win in Florida so they can be part of leading that change.
