I don't know if you heard but decision makers for THE OSCARS were thinking of creating a new category for the OSCAR AWARDS, "Most Popular Film"
Um...yeah. Black folks figured that out real quick.
Instead of considering BLACK PANTHER for BEST PICTURE as many expected, the white gatekeepers in Hollywood tried to pop up with a new category put dump it in. They wanted to give Ryan Coogler's film a token award to acknowledge it... just a little.
Uh...Naaah Son.
You don't create special little trash categories so as to get rid of an outstanding film with outstanding performances just because
1) it's a superhero flick and
2) A black film has a shot at BEST PICTURE.
And I'm not fan of Michael B Jordan, with his colorstuck @$$. But he killed that Killmonger role. He killed it. He brought it back to life. And then he killed it again -- all in one film.
Through the writers and the director, he brought a current, complex racial issue to the big screen in a completely believable way. Folks debated this character's positions on justice and revenge strenuously for months. Furthermore, I actually cried when his broken-hearted, broken-headed character died -- even though I'd been rooting for his character to be defeated
I've never seen a better villain on screen in recent memory. Michael B Jordan better get that actor and they ought to find a way to give him two. However if Michael B Jordan becomes more powerful, he erases more black people via colorism casting --same as he did in the casting of SAVING DION. So, I guess I've got mixed feelings.
Anyway.
After some major blacklash Oscar backed the hell off the special, new, pioneering category they'd created to dump BLACK PANTHER in -- regardless of the official reason mention for abandoning this new category in the white mainstream news, I'd bet a lot of money OSCAR decided the blacklash wasn't going to be worth it.

It wasn't long before Disney came up with it's Oscar Wish List. It looks a lot like mine.
Best Picture
Best Director (Ryan Coogler),
Best Actor (Chadwick Boseman),
Best Supporting Actor
(with scene-stealing shoo-in for a nomination Michael B. Jordan going up against costars Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, Sterling K. Brown, Forest Whitaker, Andy Serkis)
Best Supporting Actress (also super competitive with Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, and Angela Bassett all being submitted).
