ERIKA ALEXANDER ON BRINGING GOOD BLACK CHARACTERS BACK TO TELEVISION

One of the hosts of THE BREAKFAST CLUB asked Alexander why black characters and black television shows disappeared after THE COSBY SHOW, 227, LIVING SINGLE etc. made so much money for television executives.
Erika Alexander said the answer is, "Racism."  Racism is institutionalized. And the institutions are made up of people.
And the people in power in white and they really only like to see themselves.

There was no good reason for black characters to disappear near the year 2000 up until Shonda Rhimes'  did GREYS ANATOMY, who acquired some power and then brought us Kerry Washington as a lead in SCANDAL and Viola Davis as a lead in HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER.

Alexander also talked about how her character Max on LIVING SINGLE inspired women like Carol Mosley Braun to become lawyer and others to become lawyers.

Representation counts.
